Blue Oak (Japanese: オーキド・グリーン Green Okido) is the rival of the player and the Champion in the Generation I games, as well as in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, their Generation III remakes.

Sometime during the three years between the Generation I games' plotline and the events of the Generation II games and their remakes, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Blue took the place of Giovanni as the Viridian City Gym Leader, as Giovanni had mysteriously disappeared after he disbanded Team Rocket. Blue does not specialize in a particular type of Pokémon and, like Giovanni before him, he gives anyone who defeats him an Earth Badge.

In the games

Role

He is a very cocky and somewhat unfriendly young man, typically bidding Red/Leaf farewell with "Smell ya later!", and his primary motivation throughout the game is to become the greatest Trainer. He eventually accomplishes this, defeating the Kanto Elite Four and becoming the Pokémon Champion, but is quickly defeated by the player, losing the position.

In Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, Pokémon Yellow, and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Blue is the player's rival: he will meet up with the player as he or she journeys across the Kanto region, challenging him or her every once in a while to test their skills. Like the player, he receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak, his grandfather: the one he chooses will be of the type which weakens the type of the player's choice. In Yellow, he will take the Eevee Oak had intended for the player.

Eventually, Blue becomes the Champion at Indigo Plateau, though he is defeated by the player before Professor Oak arrives to congratulate him. Frustrated, he journeys to the Sevii Islands at Professor Oak's request, obtaining new Pokémon to use in his matches against the player at the Indigo Plateau (as all in-game Champions return to their position on the player's return to their hometown).

Professor Oak, his grandfather, deems Blue to have not realized how to care for Pokémon, which he commends the player for, on becoming Champion. This is evident in the state Blue leaves Silph Co. in, which is still under Team Rocket control, leaving the player to take out Giovanni.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, however, it is revealed that, after he was defeated at the Indigo Plateau by Red (Leaf does not appear and is not mentioned in the remake games, and did not exist at the time of Generation II), Blue returned to Pallet Town. As Viridian Gym's Leader, Giovanni, had abandoned it on his defeat at the hands of Red, Blue took the position, now handing out the Earth Badge to Trainers who bested him. In Generation IV, he also distributes TM92 (Trick Room) to those who win the Earth Badge, but does not give a TM out in Generation II. He has not lost his nature as a traveling Trainer, however, and frequently leaves his Gym, creating problems for Trainers who wish to challenge him. When they do find him wherever he is, he points them in the direction of Viridian Gym for an official league battle. Blue will not battle the player until he or she has the other seven Kanto Badges in remakes. However, in originals he can be challenged as early as after the meeting on Cinnabar Island .

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver only, the player can face Blue in a rematch at the Fighting Dojo. The method of obtaining his number is slightly different from the other Gym Leaders. The player must have his or her Pokémon at maximum friendship and have it massaged by Daisy Oak seven times. After the seventh time, she will give the player Blue's phone number when spoken to. He can be called for a rematch on Sunday night.

In Black 2 and White 2, the player can challenge Blue in the Pokémon World Tournament. He participates in the Champions Tournament, with Giovanni filling in his space as a Kanto Gym Leader.

While he does not appear in X and Y, Blue is mentioned by a woman in the Magenta Plaza Pokémon Center in Lumiose City, who says that Blue traveled to the Kalos region to study abroad.

Indigo Plateau
  • Before battle
"Hey! I was looking forward to seeing you, <player>! My rival should be strong to keep me sharp! While working on my Pokédex, I looked all over for powerful Pokémon! Not only that, I assembled teams that would beat any Pokémon type! And now! I am the Pokémon League Champion! <Player>! Do you know what that means? I'll tell you! I am the most powerful trainer in the world!"
  • Being defeated
"NO! That can't be! You beat my best! After all that work to become League champ? My reign is over already? It's not fair!"
  • After being defeated
"Why? Why did I lose? I never made any mistakes raising my Pokémon… Darn it! You're the new Pokémon League Champion! Although I don't like to admit it."

Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal

Cinnabar Island
"Who are you? Well, it's plain to see that you're a trainer… My name's Blue. I was once the Champion, although it was for only a short time… That meddling Red did me in… Anyway, what do you want? You want to challenge me or something? …I hate to say it, but I'm not in the mood for a battle now. Take a good look around you… A volcano erupts, and just like that, a whole town disappears. We can go on winning and losing in Pokémon. But if nature so much as twitches, we can lose in a second. … That's the way it is… But, anyway, I'm still a trainer. If I see a strong opponent, it makes me want to battle. If you want to battle me, come to the Viridian Gym. I'll take you on then."
Viridian Gym
  • Before battle
"Yo! Finally got here, huh? I wasn't in the mood at Cinnabar, but now I'm ready to battle you. … You're telling me you conquered all the Gyms in Johto? Heh! Johto's Gyms must be pretty pathetic then. Hey, don't worry about it. I'll know if you are good or not by battling you right now. Ready, Johto boyGS/Johto ChampC?"
  • Being defeated
"What? How the heck did I lose to you? … Tch, all right… Here, take this-- it's Earth Badge."
  • After being defeated
"… All right, I was wrong. You're the real deal. You are a good trainer. But I'm going to beat you someday. Don't you forget it!"
"Listen, you. You better not lose until I beat you. Got it?"

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Professor Oak's Laboratory
  • If talked before going into grass
"What, it's only <player>? Gramps isn't around."
  • After getting dragged into lab
"Gramps! I'm fed up with waiting!"
"Hey! Gramps! No fair! What about me?"
  • Before player chooses the starter Pokémon
"Heh, I don't need to be greedy like you. I'm mature! Go ahead and choose, <player>!"
  • While choosing the starter
"I'll take this one, then!"
  • After choosing starter
"My Pokémon looks a lot tougher than yours."
  • Before battle
"Wait <player>! Let's check out our Pokémon! Come on, I'll take you on!"
  • After being defeated
"WHAT? Unbelievable! I picked the wrong Pokémon!"
  • If the player is defeated
"<starter>, come back! Yeah! Am I great or what?"
  • After the battle
"Okay! I'll make my Pokémon battle to toughen it up! <player>! Gramps! Smell you later!"
"Gramps! I almost forgot! What did you call me for?"
"Alright Gramps! Leave it all to me! <player> I hate to say it, but you won't be necessary for this. I know! I'll borrow a Town Map from my sis! I'll tell her not to lend you one, <player>! Hahaha! Don't bother coming around to my place after this!"
  • When receiving National Pokédex:
"Hey, I heard that! Gramps, what's with favoring <player> over me all the time? I went and collected more Pokémon and faster, too. You should just let me handle everything."
"Gramps, calm down. Don't get so excited. I'll get the Pokédex completed, don't you worry about a thing. I think I'll try looking around One Island first… Anyways, I am outta here!"

"Oh yeah, right. I feel sorry for you. No, really. You're always plodding behind me. So here, I'll give you a little present as a favor. A chatty gossip like you… That thing's perfect. I don't need it because I don't give a hoot about others. All right, this time I really am gone. Smell ya!"

Four Island
"Hey! <player>! What are you doing here in the Sevii Islands? You should quit copying me, you know? Anyways, I already got my Pokémon Egg so I'm done with this island. Heh, I bet you don't even know about Pokémon Eggs. You'll never fill your National Pokédex that way. By the way, I saw someone we both know on this island. Why don't you go look around if it makes you curious? Me, I don't have time to waste. Be smelling ya!"
Six Island
"Hey, <player>! How's your Pokédex filling up? It looks like it's impossible to get all the Pokémon by hanging around just these parts. I'll keep collecting Pokémon at my own pace while I train them. That's what I'll do. So there's no point staying here. I may as well leave for home. That's that, then! Smell ya later!"

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Cinnabar Island
  • When first talked to
"Who are you? My name's Blue. I was once the Kanto Champion. Although it was short-lived thanks to Red… Anyway, take a good look around you…"
"A volcano erupts, and just like that, a whole town disappears. We can go on winning and losing in Pokémon, but if nature so much as twitches, we can be overwhelmed in a second… That's the way it is… But, anyway, I'm still a Trainer. If I see a strong opponent, it makes me want to battle."
  • If the player has less than seven Kanto Badges
"If you want to battle me… for real, show me how many Kanto Badges you've got. … <number of Kanto Badges>… You're not ready to battle me…"
  • If the player has seven Kanto Badges
"If you want to battle me… for real, come to the Viridian Gym. I'll be waiting for you!"
Viridian Gym
  • Before battle
"Yo! Finally got here, huh? I wasn't in the mood at Cinnabar, but now I'm ready to battle you. … You're telling me you conquered all the Gyms in Johto? Hahaha! Heh! Johto's Gyms are that pathetic? Hey, don't worry about it. I'll know if you are good or not by battling you right now."
  • After sending out last Pokémon
"Heh heh heh… You're unprepared for this. We'll knock you down!"
  • Last Pokémon on critical health
"Perhaps I'm the one who was unprepared?"
  • Being defeated
"This is the real power of Johto…"
  • After being defeated
"No way! How the heck did I lose to you? … Tch, all right… Here, take this. It's the Earth Badge."
"With this Badge, you'll be able to use the HM move Rock Climb! Here! Take this as well!"
"It contains Trick Room! It allows slower Pokémon to move before faster Pokémon for a while. It's a very tricky move, isn't it? Hence the name!"
"… All right, I was wrong. You're the real deal. You are a good trainer. But I'm going to beat you someday. Don't you forget it!"
Fighting Dojo
  • Before battle
"Good! Thanks for coming to lose to me!"
  • Being defeated
"Just as I expected! No wonder you've become the Champion…"
  • After being defeated
"Hahaha! My scare tactic doesn't scare you at all!"
PokéGear Phone
For registering Blue's number, see Daisy Oak
  • Calling him
"Hello…Whatever… Don't worry about me. I'm doing peachy over here! If it's not Sunday night, then I'm not available. Call then or forget about it!"
On Sunday evenings:
"Hello…Whatever… Don't worry about me. I'm doing peachy over here! I was just looking for something to do! Wanna battle me again?"
Yes: "Whatever! I won't lose to you again, got that? I'll be waiting at the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City."

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2

Pokémon World Tournament
  • Before battle (first round)
"Right now, I'm really in the mood for a battle!"
  • Before battle (second round)
"But, I'm a Trainer. If I see a strong opponent, it makes me want to battle."
  • Before battle (final round)
"I'll know if you are good or not by battling you right now."
  • Being defeated
How the heck did I lose to you?"
  • If the player is defeated
"This is what I, Kanto's top-level Trainer, can really do!"
  • After being defeated
"You're the real deal. You are a good Trainer. But I'm going to beat you someday. Don't you forget it!"
  • After winning
"You're tough, I'll give you that. But there's always someone better. You have to be more dedicated! Smell ya later!"
  • In the lobby, after the tournament
"Three wins and you've done it! Luck can also be a factor, and I'm still not satisfied at all! Oh, I didn't think you won because of luck, though!"

Counterparts

In the anime

File:Gary Oak.png
Blue's anime counterpart, Gary Oak
Main article: Gary Oak
Main article: Blue (Origins)

Blue himself does not make an appearance in the anime; however, he receives an anime counterpart in Gary Oak, Ash Ketchum's rival. Much like Blue, Gary was initially very arrogant, but mellowed out after he was defeated by his rival. Unlike Blue, however, Gary has not been shown to have taken over Viridian Gym, instead he has decided to become a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather, and is currently working with Professor Rowan in Sinnoh.

Blue also had a direct counterpart that appeared in the Pokémon Origins mini-series. This counterpart shared Blue's name, in-game role, and design.

Pokémon
Pidgeot
Blue's Pidgeot

Pidgeot is Blue's only known Pokémon. It battled with Jou's Feraligatr and lost.

Pidgeot's only known move is Twister*.

In other manga

Blue, like many in-game characters, has several counterparts in the many different manga series based on Pokémon. While these manga counterparts are distinct from Blue and each other, they generally share his appearance and personality traits.

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

Main article: Gary Oak → In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

Blue's anime counterpart, Gary Oak, also appears in the The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga. In the manga, he has a sister (unseen in the anime) named May.

In the Pokémon 4Koma manga

Main article: Rival (4Koma)

In Pokémon 4Koma, Blue has a counterpart simply named Rival.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Main article: Blue (Adventures)

Blue has a direct counterpart in a similarly named character of Pokémon Adventures.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

Main article: Green (Pocket Monsters)

Blue has a counterpart in the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga named Green. Green is Red's rival and, like Blue, is Professor Oak's grandson.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga

Main article: Shigeru (Zensho)

Blue has a counterpart in the Pokémon Zensho manga named Shigeru, named after Blue's alternate name from the games and Gary's Japanese name.

Trivia

  • Blue's profile front sprites from Pokémon Red and Green, like Red's, possibly correspond to his earlier Capsule Monsters artwork instead of his final Generation I artwork, suggesting that the sprites were created very early in the games' development or that Game Freak forgot to update their aesthetics to match the changes.
    • Although part of the changes made in Pokémon Yellow are directly inspired by the anime, the updates to Blue's front sprites were done in order to match his then official artwork more accurately. His updated initial profile front sprite was then recycled for the Generation II games. Another possibility is that Pokémon Yellow actually uses that sprite from Pokémon Gold and Silver as these games were in development at least a year prior to the release of Pokémon Yellow in Japan. A similar situation occurs with Red.
  • Hidden data in the Generation I games reveals placeholder names for Blue and Red:
    • The unused default name for Blue in the English Generation I games is Sony while Red's is Ninten. While it is impossible to view these names during regular gameplay, changing a few memory addresses in RAM can allow for these names to appear as shown here. This references the fact that in the years surrounding the releases of the Generation I games, Sony was Nintendo's main competition. Ninten is also the default name of the main protagonist of Mother, a game developed by Creatures, Inc. and which has worked on the Pokémon games since the start.
    • In the Japanese Generation I games, the unused default names for Blue and Red differ between Pokémon Red and Green and Pokémon Blue and then between the latter and Pokémon Yellow[1]:
      • In Pokémon Red and Green, Blue's unused default name is いしはら Ishihara while Red's is やまぐち Yamaguchi. Ishihara refers to Tsunekazu Ishihara, the current president and CEO of The Pokémon Company and who was the games' producer at the time, while Yamaguchi refers to Wataru Yamaguchi, an art director that worked on the original games.
      • In Pokémon Blue, the unused default names for Blue and Red are, respectively, クリチャ Kuricha, a reference to Creatures, Inc. and ゲーフリ Gēfuri, an abbreviation of Game Freak's name in Japanese (ゲームフリーク Gēmu Furīku).
      • In Pokémon Yellow, Blue's unused default name remained unaltered while Red's was subtly altered by gaining an extra digit (ゲーフリ1).
  • Along with Red, Lance, and the Generation I and III Kanto Gym Leaders (excluding Giovanni), Blue has appeared in generations I-V of the Pokémon games. He is also the only rival with this feat.
  • Blue is the only character that has been a Rival, Champion, and Gym Leader.
  • Blue's Exeggutor in Pokémon Red and Blue is the only Champion Pokémon in any game to have an incomplete moveset.
  • His English name Blue Oak is the name of a species of oak tree. He shares this distinction with his anime counterpart, Gary Oak.
  • In the Round 2 battle of Pokémon Stadium 2, almost all of Blue's Pokémon are the signature Pokémon of several Johto Gym Leaders: Gengar is the signature Pokémon of Morty, Scyther is the signature Pokémon of Bugsy, Piloswine is the signature Pokémon of Pryce, Kingdra is the signature Pokémon of Clair, and Miltank is the signature Pokémon of Whitney. In addition, Houndoom is the signature Pokémon of Archer, the final leader of the Team Rocket Takeover stage between Olivine Gym and Mahogany Gym.
