This is named "physical attack" in some | This category of moves is named "physical attack" in Ice Face's Ability description. This term was seen more often prior to Generation IX, being present in descriptions of some moves (such as Reflect and Counter) and Abilities (such as Weak Armor and Toxic Boost) that interact with physical moves, as well as at the Exchange Service Corner from the Battle Frontier in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Counter's description also has referred to it as "physical blow" in Generation II and "physical hit" in Generation III. | ||

Status |
A physical move (Japanese: 物理技 physical move), sometimes referred to as physical attack, is one of the three categories of moves and one of the two that inflict damage.
Physical moves deal damage depending on both the Attack stat of the attacking Pokémon and the Defense stat of the defending Pokémon.
There are also a small number of special moves introduced in Generation V that are said to deal physical damage; although these moves are classified as special moves, they too deal damage based on the defending Pokémon's Defense stat (as opposed to its Special Defense).
While most physical moves make contact, some do not. For example, Earthquake does not make contact despite being a physical move.
Terminology
This category of moves is named "physical attack" in Ice Face's Ability description. This term was seen more often prior to Generation IX, being present in descriptions of some moves (such as Reflect and Counter) and Abilities (such as Weak Armor and Toxic Boost) that interact with physical moves, as well as at the Exchange Service Corner from the Battle Frontier in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Counter's description also has referred to it as "physical blow" in Generation II and "physical hit" in Generation III.
Generations I-III
Before Generation IV, whether a move was physical or special was determined by type. All damaging moves of the following types are physical moves:
Hidden Power and Weather Ball are the only moves that can be either category, due to being able to change type.
Shadow moves
The following Shadow moves are physical moves:
Game | Move | Power | Accuracy | Range | Description | |||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
XD | Shadow Blast | 80 | 100% |
|
A wicked blade of air is formed using a shadowy aura. | |||||||
XD | Shadow Blitz | 40 | 100% |
|
A Pokémon throws this tackle while casting a shadowy aura. | |||||||
XD | Shadow Break | 75 | 100% |
|
A shattering ram attack with a shadowy aura. | |||||||
XD | Shadow End | 120 | 60% |
|
A shadowy aura ram attack that also rebounds on the user. | |||||||
C | Shadow Rush | 55 | 100% |
|
A Pokémon executes a tackle while exuding a shadowy aura. | |||||||
All details are accurate to Pokémon XD. For details that have changed between games, please see an individual move's page. Target data assumes user is in the lower left. |
Additionally, ???-type Weather Ball is a physical move (only possible within a shadowy aura).
Generation IV onward
From Generation IV onward, every individual move is designated as either physical or special, independent of its type. Most damaging moves of the types that were physical before Generation IV are physical moves, and most Dark moves are also largely physical. However, there are exceptions, such as Focus Blast and Hyper Beam.
Z-Moves, Max Moves, G-Max Moves, and Tera Blast can become physical depending on use.
Abilities affecting physical moves
Name | Description | Generation |
---|---|---|
Weak Armor | The Pokémon's Defense stat is lowered when it takes damage from physical moves, but its Speed stat is sharply boosted. | V |
Toxic Boost | Powers up physical moves when the Pokémon is poisoned. | V |
Fur Coat | Halves the damage from physical moves. | VI |
Ice Face | The Pokémon's ice head can take a physical attack as a substitute, but the attack also changes the Pokémon's appearance. The ice will be restored when it snows. | VIII |
Toxic Debris | Scatters poison spikes at the feet of the opposing team when the Pokémon takes damage from physical moves. | IX |
Moves affecting physical moves
Name | Description | Generation |
---|---|---|
Counter | A retaliation move that counters any physical attack, inflicting double the damage taken. | I |
Reflect | A wondrous wall of light is put up to reduce damage from physical attacks for five turns. | I |
Aurora Veil | This move reduces damage from physical and special moves for five turns. This can be used only in a hailstorm. | VII |
Shell Trap | The user sets a shell trap. If the user is hit by a physical move, the trap will explode and inflict damage on opposing Pokémon. | VII |
Special moves with physical characteristics
Psyshock, Psystrike, and Secret Sword act as special moves in all ways except that the target's Defense is used in the damage calculation. Photon Geyser, Shell Side Arm, Tera Blast, and Tera Starstorm can become physical moves depending on the situation.
