Giovanni (Japanese: サカキ Sakaki) is the head of Team Rocket, and formerly served as the Gym Leader of Viridian City's Gym, known officially as the Viridian Gym. He handed out the Earth to Trainers who defeated him. As a Gym Leader, he specialized in Ground Pokémon, but his master plan includes collecting rare Pokémon of all types. He is the only character in the games to have the Trainer class Boss (Japanese: ロケットだんボス Team Rocket Boss).
Giovanni (Japanese: サカキ Sakaki) is the head of Team Rocket, who serves as the secretive Gym Leader of Viridian City's Gym, known officially as the Viridian Gym, in Generation I, FireRed and LeafGreen, and LGPE. He hands out the Earth to Trainers who defeat him in battle. As a Gym Leader, he specializes in Ground Pokémon, but his master plan includes collecting rare Pokémon of all types. After he disbands Team Rocket and abandons his Gym, his role as the Viridian Gym Leader is taken over by Blue. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he makes a return appearance as the leader of Team Rainbow Rocket. He is the only character in the games to have the Pokémon Traineres Boss/Rocket Boss/Team Rocket Boss (Japanese: ロケットだんボス Team Rocket Boss) and Team Rainbow Rocket (Japanese: Rロケットだん Team R Rocket).

In the games
Terminology
In the English version of Pokémon Stadium, his name is misspelled "Giovani" (with one n) to fit the game's seven-character limit for Trainer names. His name is correctly written as Giovanni in the Pokémon Stadium: Official Nintendo Player's Guide.
In the Generation I games and their remakes, Giovanni is the one Gym Leader without a title, and is not widely known, preferring to keep to the shadows.

Giovanni constantly has his thugs looking for strong Pokémon.
In the Japanese version of the Trainer Card from the Generation I games, he is unidentified and his name is written as ???, as opposed to other Gym Leaders who have their names written on the Trainer Card. However, the English version of the Generation I Trainer Card does not have any names of Gym Leaders. Giovanni appears as a silhouette in both language versions.

Giovanni had several hideouts, the most prominent ones underneath Celadon City's Rocket Game Corner, and the Viridian Gym itself.
He is also unidentified and has his name is written as ??? on the list of Gym Leaders seen in Japanese and English manuals of the Generation I games and the English manual of FireRed and LeafGreen, even though he is identified normally in the Japanese manual of FireRed and LeafGreen.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, it was revealed that Giovanni has a child with red hair. Many people believed this referred to the red-haired rival from Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions and Pokémon Crystal Version, also known as Silver, who values power and strength and despises weakness, including Pokémon and Team Rocket, who he considers weak.
In the core series games
Character profile
Giovanni is the primary antagonist of the games taking place in Kanto.

This relationship with Silver was confirmed in HeartGold and SoulSilver, where it is seen that Giovanni abandons Silver and leaves to train in the Tohjo Falls.
In the first games Giovanni appeared in, he served a dual role: one that was well known to the residents of Kanto, and one that was more secret. He was first shown as the leader of the villainous Team Rocket, the first of many criminal organizations to grace the Pokémon games. After the player defeated him and his team of Grunts at Silph Co., Giovanni fled to a hideout that the player is unaware of. Once the player returned to Viridian City, one of the major plot twists of these games revealed that Giovanni, in addition to his role as a criminal, was the final Gym Leader to be fought before the Elite Four—albeit one without a formal title. Here, he specializes in the Ground type. Once defeated, he disbanded Team Rocket and left the player with the Earth and 27. If talked to again, he then vanishes and is not seen again for the rest of the game.

In addition to the Earth Badge, Giovanni gives out 27, in Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow Versions. In , he gives out 26.
Giovanni's role in FireRed and LeafGreen is much the same; the one difference is that defeating him in the Gym battle will earn the player 26, instead of TM27 (Fissure). He also implies that he intends to return to power one day rather than being moved to dedicate his life to the study of Pokémon. There is a side-plot in the Sevii Islands that revolves around Giovanni; a group of Team Rocket members are trying to continue the aims of Team Rocket, but they abandon this when they realize that their leader has been defeated once and for all.

Although Team Rocket plays a major role in the plot of Generation II games, Giovanni himself does not make an appearance, despite being mentioned many times by Rocket members.  His absence is explained by one of the Executives as being due to his wish to train alone elsewhere for the time being, after his defeat at the hands of the main protagonist of the Generation I games three years earlier. During the game, Team Rocket captures the Goldenrod City Radio Tower to broadcast their return and call for Giovanni to return to them and take command again, but their calls go unheeded and they are disbanded again.
In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Giovanni's story is slightly expanded from his first appearance. During his first appearance, he is seen talking with Archer and giving him the permission to proceed with the plan to take over Silph Co. After being defeated for the first time, he gives the player the Silph Scope as a token of apology for mocking them, as opposed to just leaving the device behind before leaving, like in previous games. At the Silph Co., a part of his conversation with the Silph Co. President is shown, with Giovanni demanding him to hand over the Master Ball like they had previously agreed. In the Gym battle, Giovanni's reward TM once again contains Earthquake, although now, it's TM41, instead of TM26.

Giovanni appears in HeartGold and SoulSilver as an event Trainer. If the player takes a fateful encounter Celebi to the shrine in Ilex Forest, Celebi will take the player and their friend Kotone/Hibiki back in time to see Giovanni abandon his son, Silver, to go on a quest to become stronger. Celebi will then take the player forward in time to fight Giovanni in a secret hideout located within Tohjo Falls to prevent him from reuniting with the Rocket Executives calling out to him from the Goldenrod Radio Tower.
In , a group of Team Rocket members tries to relaunch the old team. They take over Goldenrod Radio Tower, and broadcast a radio announcement intended for Giovanni. Only in HeartGold and SoulSilver is it revealed that Giovanni does hear the broadcast, from his hideout in Tohjo Falls - an event in the remakes involving a time-traveling Celebi allows Ethan and Lyra to travel back in time and defeat Giovanni at the same time the rest of Team Rocket is being defeated at the Radio Tower. Upon defeat, he will begin ranting about how he keeps losing to children and, like before, Giovanni will leave the room and disappear. Later, in Kanto, it is revealed that Blue took over the Viridian Gym after his disappearance.

Fame Checker
The Celebi event also reveals some of Giovanni's background from the three years between Generation I/III and Generation II/IV. While it was mentioned by Scientist Gideon in FireRed and LeafGreen that Giovanni has a son with red hair, the son's identity wasn't revealed until the time travel event in HeartGold and SoulSilver. As many fans speculated (and as was mentioned in the Pokémon Adventures manga series), this son is the rival of the Johto player character, Silver. Much of Silver's personality is a result of the treatment he received from Giovanni, which includes abandonment. Like many of Giovanni's other actions throughout the games, this reflects on his selfishness.
This is a list of the Fame Checker's information on Giovanni in FireRed and LeafGreen.

;Rocket HQ - Giovanni
Giovanni reappears in in the Pokémon World Tournament, replacing Blue, who instead participates in the Champions Tournament. Giovanni returns to using Ground types exclusively. While the announcer usually introduces Gym Leaders by their title, Giovanni, who does not have a title, is introduced as "The Self-Proclaimed Strongest Trainer" (Japanese: さいきょうの トレーナーと なのる Self-Proclaimed Strongest Trainer).

An alternate universe Giovanni appears in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's Episode RR post-game story as the Boss of Team Rainbow Rocket. This version of Giovanni came from a universe where Team Rocket succeeded in taking over the world. He is first seen during the Aether Foundation's broadcast from Aether Paradise, where he seizes control of the organization from Lusamine. He uses an Ultra Wormhole to transform her mansion into Team Rocket's Castle, fortifies himself inside it, and stations versions of Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, Lysandre, and Ghetsis from other worlds as his guards, along with an army of Team Rainbow Rocket Grunts. After battling through his army, the player and Lillie find Giovanni holding an unconscious Lusamine inside his control center deep within the castle. He introduces himself and reveals that he plans to create an army of Ultra Beasts in order to conquer all worlds. For that purpose, he needs the Aether Foundation's resources, and intends to brainwash Lusamine into serving him. Feeling nostalgic that a child would challenge him, Giovanni battles the player with a party that includes a Mewtwo capable of Mega Evolving, and is ultimately defeated. Accepting his loss, Giovanni abandons his plans for the Aether Foundation but swears that Team Rainbow Rocket will never fall. He leaves as Colress begins working to revert Team Rocket's Castle back into Lusamine's mansion, and is last seen reflecting on what world he should target for his schemes next before warping away.

After Episode RR has started, Sophocles creates a battle program based on Giovanni that appears as a boss in the Battle Agency within Festival Plaza. Giovanni is also implied to have stopped by at the Alola Photo Club to leave villainous team-based stickers for the player to use after he was defeated by them.

Appearance
In most of the games he appears in, Giovanni is depicted as a tall, middle-aged man. He has very short, flat, dark hair and small dark eyes. He wears a long sleeved black shirt with a large V neck that shows off a white undershirt, black slightly baggy trousers, and black shoes. On the left side of his shirt is the red Team Rocket logo.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver and B2W2, he wears a black trench coat with a red triangular symbol on it instead of his usual black shirt. He also wears a black fedora hat.

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, he looks the same as his normal appearance, with the only difference being that his undershirt is red instead of white.

His alternate universe self in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon looks the same as his original counterpart, with the only difference being that the Team Rocket logo on his shirt being changed into the rainbow-colored Team Rainbow Rocket logo.

In the spin-off games
Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR!
In Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR!, the The Boss's Way card is available. The boss mentioned by the card is Giovanni.

*Gym battle:
Pokémon GO
"Fwahahaha! This is my hideout! It shall be so until I can restore Team Rocket to its former glory. But, you have found me again. So be it. This time, I'm not holding back! Once more, you shall face Giovanni, the greatest Trainer!"
Giovanni (GO)
In Pokémon GO, Giovanni appears as the boss of Team GO Rocket, who operate by invading PokéStops and battling using Shadow Pokémon.

"Ha! That was a truly intense fight. You have won! As proof, here is the Earth Badge!"
Pokémon Masters EX
Giovanni (Masters)
Giovanni forms a sync pair with Mewtwo, Nidoking, Giovanni, Rhydon, and Nidorino in Pokémon Masters EX. His Mewtwo is capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y, while his Nidoking is capable of Dynamaxing. Giovanni became a playable sync pair on December 5, 2019.

"Having lost in this fashion, I can't face my followers. I have betrayed their trust. As of today, Team Rocket is finished forever! As for myself, I shall dedicate my life to training again. Let us meet again someday! Farewell!"
In this game, Giovanni is from an alternate universe where Team Rocket succeeded in taking over the world and later became the leader of Team Rainbow Rocket, which was introduced in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. He has made notable appearances in the game's Main Stories: the PML Arc, Legendary Adventures, and is the overall main antagonist of the Villain Arc. The whereabouts of Giovanni from this game's continuity are currently unknown.

While Giovanni very rarely takes the role of antagonist, his agents often have him in mind during missions due to the chance of power, be it through promotion or other means. This gave him a unique series of appearances, mainly during the Hoenn saga, where Meowth often saw how the Pokémon in each episode could be used to help Giovanni and win the trio promotions. These boss fantasies never show his actual personality and occasionally even show Giovanni in chibi form.

His first appearance was in the episode Battle Aboard the St. Anne, choosing a Giovanni as his "top cat" over MTR, and talking to Jessie, James, and Meowth through a TV screen. His face always remained hidden in the shadows, usually with only his mouth visible. In Island of the Giant Pokémon, it is revealed that he owns the theme park, Pokémon Land, and the giant mechanical Pokémon in it, and was not happy to hear that it had been destroyed.

Up until the episode The Battle of the Badge, his voice had an effect to it as if it were two people talking at once (he wanted to hide his voice because of the possiblity that the police could be wiretapping his conversations with his subordinates, and if he was to be arrested, the authorities would not be able to make a connection between the recordings of his normal and altered voices, and also to maintain his legitimate status of Gym Leader. That is why his voice is never altered after the aforementioned episode, because he is no longer Gym Leader, and the Team Rocket HQ (the Viridian Gym) was destroyed and the base is now hidden and he disappeared with his organization). However, in this episode, he is given a normal voice, and during his battle with Gary, he steps out of the shadows, and his face is seen for the first time. He is known to have a Machamp, Kingler, Rhydon, and Golem, but when he is at a disadvantage, he uses Mewtwo to defeat Gary's Nidoking and Arcanine. Giovanni appears to care nothing for his other Pokémon, as (with the exception of Persian) they are kept in cages when not used in battle.

In the episode Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, Giovanni's building was blown up by Mewtwo. He and his Persian survived the explosion and angrily told Jessie, James, and Meowth to do their job (ironically they were about to quit).

Giovanni also appeared near the beginning of the movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, as he was the one who had Dr. Fuji clone Mewtwo for him. After Mewtwo destroyed the lab, Giovanni told Mewtwo that he saw him as a valuable partner, putting armor on Mewtwo and using him to defeat Trainers in gym battles (including Gary's Nidoking and Arcanine, as seen in the anime) and help Team Rocket in their attempts to steal Pokémon. Eventually Mewtwo confronts Giovanni about his treatment and Giovanni admits that he doesn't consider Mewtwo a partner but a servant. This enrages Mewtwo and it is this incident which drives it to destroy Giovanni's base allowing it to escape.
Quotes
Giovanni/Quotes

Giovanni is the main antagonist in the movie Mewtwo Returns, seeking out Mewtwo, who by this time is living in peace with the cloned Pokémon at Mt. Quena. Once Giovanni discovered him, he tried to capture him back by threatening the cloned Pokémon. He used two machines to try to make Mewtwo submit to his will, but though Mewtwo stepped into the orb, he was still unwilling to serve Giovanni, threatening to destroy his body first. Ash and the others were able to stop the machines, and it was around this time that they faced off against Giovanni and several Team Rocket soldiers. Their Pokémon fought as a distraction so Ash could get Mewtwo into the spring. Once Mewtwo was healed from his injuries, he moved the spring under the mountain to protect it, and then erased the memories of Giovanni and the other Team Rocket soldiers (excluding Jessie, James, and Meowth) of him, making him forget entirely about Mewtwo. Standing next to Domino and Persian wondering what they were doing, he gets the strange feeling as though he has been utterly defeated.
In the anime
The only time Giovanni has been seen in battle was in The Battle of the Badge. He used powerful Pokémon against Gary but later left the Gym to deal with an unexplained emergency, leaving Ash to battle Jessie. By the time Ash returned from Hoenn, Agatha was in charge of the Gym until a new leader could be found.  Giovanni's reasons for leaving it have not been explained.
Main series
Giovanni (anime)
Giovanni appears in the anime as the head of Team Rocket. Unlike the members of other prominent criminal organizations, he is a recurring character from Pokémon the Series: The Beginning to Pokémon Journeys: The Series, usually keeping in contact with the Team Rocket trio. In Pokémon the Series: Black & White, he also appears in person to take on the role of direct antagonist at times.

Very little is known about his past in any timeline; he is generally shrouded in mystery. His mother was the head of Team Rocket before him. However, this is presumed to be canon in the anime timeline only, as the games have no precedent for this.
Pokémon Origins
Giovanni appeared in File 3: Giovanni. Red first recalled meeting him at the Rocket Hideout. They later encountered again at Silph Co. after Team Rocket had taken over the building. Seeing Red's arrogant and determined attitude to stop Team Rocket every time, Giovanni decided to put him in his place, and battled Red's Charizard with his Nidoqueen, winning easily before escaping with a helicopter, declaring that Red could never understand what he was hoping to achieve.

Giovanni appeared once more as the Viridian Gym Leader. Giovanni accepted his Gym challenge, but Red claimed that he would battle him as the enemy of all Pokémon, instead of a Gym Leader. Hearing this, Giovanni put aside his usual Gym Leader battling team and took out his strongest pair of Pokémon, contained within Ultra Balls. The first one was Rhyhorn, which single-handedly was able to defeat four of Red's Pokémon before drawing with his Hitmonlee. During the battle, Giovanni started actually feeling excited, and wondered why he was feeling that way. When he saw the pose Red took while sending out his Charizard, he finally remembered his childhood passion for Pokémon and battling, and wondered how he could have ever turned into a person who only treated Pokémon as tools for business. After Red's Charizard had defeated Giovanni's last Pokémon, Rhydon, Giovanni offered him the Earth Badge as a proof of his victory. Red, however, refused to take a Badge from the Boss of Team Rocket. Seeing this, Giovanni turned to his minions, informing them that from that moment onward, Team Rocket would be officially disbanded. He then turned back to Red, now offering the Badge to him not as the Boss of Team Rocket but as the Viridian City Gym Leader. Red accepted the Earth Badge and left, heading for the Pokémon League.

Pokémon
As his battle with Red had reminded Giovanni of how Pokémon could be taken as fun rather than business, he decided that he wanted to find a new path for himself and his Pokémon, without being the Boss of Team Rocket any longer.

After the International Police had failed to find him during a raid at the Viridian Gym, he was seen standing on a hill near Viridian City, declaring that Team Rocket would never fall, before walking away. He reappeared in a flashback in The Legacy. He later provides some minor assistance to the fight against the Elite Four on Cerise Island. He helps Red escape from Lorelei's ice and provides him with some evolutionary stones for his Eevee. Giovanni then comes to Yellow's side as she was struggling in her battle with Lance, telling her that he is from the Viridian Forest as well. However, his plan is later revealed to just wanting to find and reunite with his son and see him grown up before Giovanni dies (He has some sort of illness, although it is never explained what it is). When Silver and Giovanni found themselves in the flames of a wreckage at one point, Giovanni used his own body to protect the unconscious boy from the fire. At first, Silver denied that Giovanni could possibly be his father, and then would not accept him as a father. However, after he saw how Giovanni put his own life at stake to save him, Silver broke down in tears and accepted him as his father. From this point on, Giovanni is presumably not the leader of Team Rocket any more, and is succeeded by the Three Beasts member Carr. When he was still the Viridian Gym Leader, Giovanni had obtained the nickname "Giovanni Of The Land" because all his Pokémon were Grounds, save his Cloyster and Beedrill. ==Trivia==
Trivia
*In the games, Giovanni is the only Gym Leader to appear outside of his Gym in Generation I, whereas in later generations, this is quite common.
* Giovanni is the only Gym Leader in the games to appear outside of his Gym in Generation I, a feature that would become more and more common up to Generation IV, during and after which all Gym Leaders in the featured regions appear outside of their Gym in one way or another.
*In How I Became a Pokémon Card, a short manga by Kagemaru Himeno, he and Giovanni were shown to have been together for a long time, as he rescued the cat when he was a child.
** He is also the only Gym Leader not to use the "A Trainer Appears (Boy Version)" song.
*In the English version of Pokémon Stadium, his name is misspelled Giovani (with one n). This is because the space for Trainer names only allows seven characters, whilst Giovanni's name has eight.
* In the official Red and Blue guide from Nintendo Power, Giovanni was labelled to be a regional boss of Team Rocket (implying he's not the absolute leader). This was invalidated in , where it was made clear that Giovanni was the absolute leader of Team Rocket (even having an office in Johto).
*According to the Pokémon Adventures manga, Giovanni's birthday is August 1st and his blood type is O.
* Giovanni is likely based on the boss of a Yakuza faction, possibly more on the bakuto factions than others, considering Team Rocket's former ownership of the Celadon Game Corner. Outside of Japan, this reference is localized, making him more akin to a Mafia boss (especially considering his English name being Italian in origin).
*In Pokémon Live! it is stated that he dated Delia Ketchum, though this is probably not the case in the anime.
* In B2W2, Giovanni and Norman are tied for using more different species of Pokémon than any other Gym Leader at the Pokémon World Tournament, with a total of 10.
* Both Giovanni and Juan are the eighth Gym Leader in a region introduced in an odd-numbered generation. Both of their names are a foreign version of the name "John". Also, in Generation III, the manuals show them to be an unknown Gym Leader.
* Official material for the Pokémon World Tournament uses Giovanni's official artwork from FireRed and LeafGreen, even though he uses his design from HeartGold and SoulSilver in the games themselves.
*The way that Giovanni takes care of his Persian could be a reference to the supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond films.
** He is the only character to appear in the Pokémon World Tournament who does not use his most recent official artwork in promotional material.
*In the English dub of the anime, Giovanni is the first character to regain his original voice actor following the voice actor switch.
* In Yellow, he is the only Gym Leader who uses a Pokémon not of the type he specializes in during Gym battles.
*In the official Red and Blue guide from Nintendo Power, Giovanni was labeled to be a regional boss of Team Rocket (implying he's not the absolute leader). This was retconned in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, where it was made absolutely clear that Giovanni was, indeed, the absolute Leader of Team Rocket (even having an office in Johto).
* In his official Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon artwork, Giovanni has the same pose as Mewtwo X in its official artwork, just mirrored.
* Despite being mentioned throughout Gold, Silver and Crystal, he is the only Kanto Gym Leader to not appear in all generations Kanto does.
* Artwork made by Ken Sugimori suggests that Giovanni was not originally going to be the Gym Leader of Viridian City.
* Giovanni was the first Gym Leader that could be battled more than once, and is still the only one that can be battled before the Gym Battle.
* Giovanni debuted in GO as a GO Snapshot photobomb at Pokémon GO Fest in Yokohama.
** This also makes him one of three Gym Leaders that do not give a badge to the player immediately after the first defeat, the other two being Whitney and Clair.
* The teaser trailer for the debut of Team GO Rocket in GO contains the line "Earth is where I shall unleash my evil schemes next!" This is a reference to Giovanni's final line in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, in which he ponders "Now...what new world shall I unleash my evil schemes upon...?" before warping away from Aether Paradise.
* In Pokémon Adventures, Giovanni is the only evil team leader who is still alive after his exploits.
* Giovanni is the only character to be the leader of more than one villainous team.
** However, characters may not consider Pryce, Maxie or Archie to be dead, since they were last seen disappearing into Time and Space.
*He is the only Gym Leader known to have two titles (Boss and Gym Leader).
*Giovanni is the only Gym Leader that cannot be battled as many times as the player wants: the other Kanto Gym Leaders are able to be rechallenged in the Fighting Dojo, as are the Johto Gym Leaders, in , the Hoenn Gym Leaders take rechallenges via PokéNav in Emerald, and the Sinnoh Gym Leaders are found in the Battleground in Platinum. Koga and Wallace, former Gym Leaders, are able to be rechallenged by virtue of being part of the Elite Four of the Indigo Plateau and Champion of Hoenn, respectively.
*While there have previously been many event Pokémon, due to his status in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Giovanni is the first event Trainer.
*While in the Gym Battle in Generation I, he owns a Level 50 Rhydon, it is replaced by a Level 50 Rhyhorn in Generation III.
*Giovanni's Nidoking and Rhydon, both being at Level 55 during the Gym battle in Yellow, are the highest leveled Pokemon to be owned by a Gym Leader during the initial battle with them.
*Giovanni is the only criminal boss not to endanger a legendary pokemon with his exploits.
* Giovanni is most likely ether based on a Yakuza Boss in the Japanese version of the game, where as in the versions outside of Japan, he is most likely based on stereotypical Italian Mafia bosses.

Giovanni (Japanese: サカキ Sakaki) is the head of Team Rocket, who serves as the secretive Gym Leader of Viridian City's Gym, known officially as the Viridian Gym, in Generation I, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. He hands out the Earth Badge to Trainers who defeat him in battle. As a Gym Leader, he specializes in Ground-type Pokémon, but his master plan includes collecting rare Pokémon of all types. After he disbands Team Rocket and abandons his Gym, his role as the Viridian Gym Leader is taken over by Blue. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he makes a return appearance as the leader of Team Rainbow Rocket. He is the only character in the games to have the Trainer classes BossFRLG/Rocket BossHGSS/Team Rocket BossPE (Japanese: ロケットだんボス Team Rocket Boss) and Team Rainbow Rocket (Japanese: Rロケットだん Team R Rocket).

Terminology

In the English version of Pokémon Stadium, his name is misspelled "Giovani" (with one n) to fit the game's seven-character limit for Trainer names. His name is correctly written as Giovanni in the Pokémon Stadium: Official Nintendo Player's Guide.

He is also unidentified and has his name is written as ??? on the list of Gym Leaders seen in Japanese and English manuals of the Generation I games and the English manual of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, even though he is identified normally in the Japanese manual of FireRed and LeafGreen.

In the core series games

Character profile

Giovanni is the primary antagonist of the games taking place in Kanto.

Once defeated, he disbanded Team Rocket and left the player with the Earth Badge and TM27 (Fissure). If talked to again, he then vanishes and is not seen again for the rest of the game.

Giovanni's role in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen is much the same; the one difference is that defeating him in the Gym battle will earn the player TM26 (Earthquake), instead of TM27 (Fissure).

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, a group of Team Rocket members tries to relaunch the old team.

Giovanni reappears in Black 2 and White 2 in the Pokémon World Tournament, replacing Blue, who instead participates in the Champions Tournament.

An alternate universe Giovanni appears in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's Episode RR post-game story as the Boss of Team Rainbow Rocket.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, he wears a black trench coat with a red triangular symbol on it instead of his usual black shirt. He also wears a black fedora hat.

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, he looks the same as his normal appearance, with the only difference being that his undershirt is red instead of white.

His alternate universe self in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon looks the same as his original counterpart, with the only difference being that the Team Rocket logo on his shirt being changed into the rainbow-colored Team Rainbow Rocket logo.

Giovanni in the anime

Main series

Main article: Giovanni (anime)

Giovanni appears in the anime as the head of Team Rocket. Unlike the members of other prominent criminal organizations, he is a recurring character from Pokémon the Series: The Beginning to Pokémon Journeys: The Series, usually keeping in contact with the Team Rocket trio. In Pokémon the Series: Black & White, he also appears in person to take on the role of direct antagonist at times.

Pokémon Origins

Giovanni in Pokémon Origins

Giovanni appeared in File 3: Giovanni. Red first recalled meeting him at the Rocket Hideout. They later encountered again at Silph Co. after Team Rocket had taken over the building. Seeing Red's arrogant and determined attitude to stop Team Rocket every time, Giovanni decided to put him in his place, and battled Red's Charizard with his Nidoqueen, winning easily before escaping with a helicopter, declaring that Red could never understand what he was hoping to achieve.

Giovanni as a child

Along with his disapparance, rumors about Team Rocket's disbandment began circling around.

He reappeared in a flashback in The Legacy. Looker approached Giovanni's son Silver, hoping to find information on him as he had not been seen since his disappearance three years prior. However, all Silver could describe was his own last encounter with Giovanni three years ago, in which the two had a falling out that fractured their relationship.

Trivia

  • Giovanni is the only Gym Leader in the games to appear outside of his Gym in Generation I, a feature that would become more and more common up to Generation IV, during and after which all Gym Leaders in the featured regions appear outside of their Gym in one way or another.
    • He is also the only Gym Leader not to use the "A Trainer Appears (Boy Version)" song.
  • In the official Red and Blue guide from Nintendo Power, Giovanni was labelled to be a regional boss of Team Rocket (implying he's not the absolute leader). This was invalidated in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, where it was made clear that Giovanni was the absolute leader of Team Rocket (even having an office in Johto).
  • Giovanni is likely based on the boss of a Yakuza faction, possibly more on the bakuto factions than others, considering Team Rocket's former ownership of the Celadon Game Corner. Outside of Japan, this reference is localized, making him more akin to a Mafia boss (especially considering his English name being Italian in origin).
  • In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Giovanni and Norman are tied for using more different species of Pokémon than any other Gym Leader at the Pokémon World Tournament, with a total of 10.
  • Official material for the Pokémon World Tournament uses Giovanni's official artwork from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, even though he uses his design from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver in the games themselves.
    • He is the only character to appear in the Pokémon World Tournament who does not use his most recent official artwork in promotional material.
  • In Pokémon Yellow, he is the only Gym Leader who uses a Pokémon not of the type he specializes in during Gym battles.
  • In his official Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon artwork, Giovanni has the same pose as Mega Mewtwo X in its official artwork, just mirrored.
  • Artwork made by Ken Sugimori suggests that Giovanni was not originally going to be the Gym Leader of Viridian City.[5]
  • Giovanni debuted in Pokémon GO as a GO Snapshot photobomb at Pokémon GO Fest in Yokohama.
  • The teaser trailer for the debut of Team GO Rocket in GO contains the line "Earth is where I shall unleash my evil schemes next!" This is a reference to Giovanni's final line in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, in which he ponders "Now...what new world shall I unleash my evil schemes upon...?" before warping away from Aether Paradise.
  • Giovanni is the only character to be the leader of more than one villainous team.
