Toxic (Japanese: どくどく Excessive Poison) is a non-damaging Poison move introduced in Generation I. It is:
* TM06 from Generation I to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
* TM27 in LGPE.
* TM175 in Generation IX.

Toxic Badly poisoned the target, and has an accuracy of 85%. Toxic cannot affect Poison-type Pokémon.

Toxic badly poisons the opponent. Each time the opponent takes recurrent damage, the damage
When a Pokémon takes damage from bad poison, the damage done is N 16ths of the Pokémon's maximum HP (rounded down, but not less than 1), where N starts at 1 and increases each time it takes damage from poison or Leech Seed (meaning it may increase twice per turn if a Pokémon is affected by both). That is, the Pokémon takes damage equal to <math display="inline">N \times \left\lfloor {HP_{max} \over 16} \right\rfloor</math>.
will equal N*max(1, int(0.0625*MaxHP)). N starts as 1 but is increased by 1 each time the
afflicted pokémon endures recurrent damage (including by Leech Seed). Basically, the pokémon
will lose 1/16 of its maximum HP the first time, then 2/16 of its maximum HP, then 3/16 of its
maximum HP, etc.

The N value of Toxic can be reset by Haze, switching, or ending the battle, but not by Rest. If
After the battle ends, bad poison becomes regular poison. If a badly poisoned Pokémon is affected by Haze or switches out, the Pokémon's poison status becomes regular poison. If a badly poisoned Pokémon successfully uses Rest, it will be cured of poison, but counter (N) is not reset; if it subsequently suffers burn, Leech Seed or poison damage, that damage is still be calculated using the value of the counter (N), and the counter (N) will still increase by 1 each time (but if the Pokémon is poisoned by Toxic, the counter is reset to 1).
a pokémon rests off the poison and gets normally poisoned, burned, or seeded without switching
out, the N value will influence the amount of damage done, and will increase each time
recurrent damage is done. However, if a pokémon gets badly poisoned again, the cumulative value
will be reset. Unlike other types of damage, the recurrent damage done by Toxic can exceed the
opponent's current HP.

Toxic can't affect an opponent that has a substitute, already has a major status ailment, or is
In Pokémon Stadium, if bad poison is cured by Rest, the counter (N) is reset.
a ground type.

In Stadium, the N value of Toxic will be reset by Rest.
Generation II
Toxic cannot affect Steel Pokémon.

Location
Toxic and Haze no longer interact with Leech Seed. Rest now properly removes bad poison entirely (including resetting the counter).

* Generation II:
* Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: Fiery Path

If a badly poisoned Pokémon uses Baton Pass or Heal Bell, the counter is not be reset (like using Rest in Generation I). As a result, if it subsequently suffers burn or poison damage, that damage is still be calculated as <math display="inline">N \times \left\lfloor {HP_{max} \over 16} \right\rfloor</math> using the value of the counter (N), and the counter (N) will still increase by 1 each time (but if the Pokémon is poisoned by Toxic, the counter is reset to 1).

By TM
In the Generation II core series games, when an in-game opponent outside of the Battle Tower uses Toxic, the move has a 25% chance to fail in addition to its normal chance to miss.
In Generation III, Toxic is TM06.

All Pokémon that can use TMs can learn Toxic.
Generations III and IV
<div class="listcolend"></div>
Toxic is now separate from other forms of recurrent damage (no longer builds from them or affects their strength). Toxic cannot affect targets with Immunity as their Ability.

Project MoveDex notice
A Pokémon that becomes badly poisoned with Toxic will no longer have its status changed to regular poison if it switches out or the battle ends.

Generation V
Toxic now has an accuracy of 90%.

A Pokémon that becomes badly poisoned with Toxic will now change to regular poison after the battle ends.

Generation VI onwards
If Toxic is used by a Poison Pokémon, that move will never miss, even if the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Fly or Dig. If that Pokémon uses any additional moves after Toxic in the same turn, those moves will never miss either—this is known as the Toxic sure-hit glitch.

Toxic can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing Hex, Venom Drench and Venoshock to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

If powered up by a Poisonium Z into Z-Toxic, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage.

If Toxic hits a Dynamaxed opponent in Max Raid Battles, the Dynamax Pokémon is inflicted with normal poison instead of bad poison.

If Toxic hits a wild Tera Pokémon in a Tera Raid Battle, the Tera Pokémon is inflicted with normal poison, rather than bad poison.

From version 1.0.0 to version 1.3.0 of Sword and Shield, the Toxic sure-hit glitch remains the same as previous generations. In version 1.3.1 of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the glitch was fixed: If a Poison-type Pokémon uses Toxic, moves it uses later in that same turn perform accuracy checks as normal.

Trivia
* In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Toxic is depicted as two purple orbs spinning around each other towards the target. However, when Spinda or Carnivine use Toxic, the orbs travel in an erratic fashion.
* In Generation I and its remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Koga states that Toxic is a secret technique that is over 400 years old  and was passed down through his family.
* In Generation I, Toxic is the only Poison move that can be taught by TM.
* In the German releases of Red, when a Pokémon is badly poisoned by Toxic, the game uses the same message as when a Pokémon is inflicted with regular poison ("(Gegner) (name) ist vergiftet!"). In later generations, it is specified that the Pokémon was "badly poisoned" ("(Gegner) (name) ist schwer vergiftet!").
* Toxic is the first move to lose its status as a near-universal TM, with many Pokémon no longer being compatible with the move's returning TM06 in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
** Also, in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Shroomish is able to learn Toxic by TM, but its evolution, Breloom is not. However, Breloom can learn Toxic via Move Reminder.
** Ekans, Arbok, Zubat, Golbat, Grimer, and Muk cannot learn Toxic by TM in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, despite learning it by leveling up in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Toxic (Japanese: どくどく Excessive Poison) is a non-damaging Poison-type move introduced in Generation I. It is:

Effect

151Mew.png This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Examine values for Max Raid Battles (x value appears to be lower?), interaction with Dynamax/Gigantamax
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Generation I

151Mew.png This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Check whether this line applies to both Pokémon Stadium (Japanese) and the international Pokémon Stadium: "In Pokémon Stadium, the N value of Toxic is reset by Rest."
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Toxic badly poisons the target, and has an accuracy of 85%. Toxic cannot affect Poison-type Pokémon.

That is, the Pokémon takes damage equal to .

In Pokémon Stadium, if bad poison is cured by Rest, the counter (N) is reset.

Generation II

Toxic cannot affect Steel-type Pokémon.

Toxic and Haze no longer interact with Leech Seed. Rest now properly removes bad poison entirely (including resetting the counter).

If a badly poisoned Pokémon uses Baton Pass or Heal Bell, the counter is not be reset (like using Rest in Generation I). As a result, if it subsequently suffers burn or poison damage, that damage is still be calculated as using the value of the counter (N), and the counter (N) will still increase by 1 each time (but if the Pokémon is poisoned by Toxic, the counter is reset to 1).

In the Generation II core series games, when an in-game opponent outside of the Battle Tower uses Toxic, the move has a 25% chance to fail in addition to its normal chance to miss.

Generations III and IV

Toxic is now separate from other forms of recurrent damage (no longer builds from them or affects their strength). Toxic cannot affect targets with Immunity as their Ability.

If Toxic is used by a Poison-type Pokémon, that move will never miss, even if the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Fly or Dig.

From version 1.0.0 to version 1.3.0 of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Toxic sure-hit glitch remains the same as previous generations. In version 1.3.1 of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the glitch was fixed: If a Poison-type Pokémon uses Toxic, moves it uses later in that same turn perform accuracy checks as normal.
