Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is the Champion of the Sinnoh region's Elite Four in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

In the games

Sinnoh

Cynthia helps the main character against Team Galactic in a point in the game. In Platinum, when encountered in Eterna City, she will give the player an egg from which Togepi will hatch. She is also found on Route 214 after the player has defeated Crasher Wake and received the Fen Badge. She gives the player the SecretPotion to get past the Psyduck group on Route 210. She is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time researching and exploring various sites associated with Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region. Her family lives in Celestic Town, although her own hometown is unknown. She is implied to have helped Rowan with his Pokédex and embarked on an adventure similar to the protagonist as a child.

In Platinum, after Giratina appears in Spear Pillar and takes Cyrus down with it, Cynthia rushes to the scene and assists the player during their trip to the Distortion World. She then expresses that everything that happened was destined, even though she wished that she was the one who battled Giratina.

Later, she reappears as the League Champion.

After beating the game, if the player visits Celestic Town Ruins, she will come and explain what the ruins mean.

Quotes

Before battle

"One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"

OR

"Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. And the Distortion World. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"

The bottom quote is only said the very first time she is challenged. After winning at least once, it permanently changes to the top quote.

During battle

"I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"

"I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"

When defeated

"Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"

In Celestic Ruins (after beating the Elite Four, Platinum only)

"This cave painting...It's always been described this way. The light in the center represents either Dialga or Palkia appearing at the Spear Pillar. The three lights around it were thought to be Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. May I continue? But, then, I realized that there may be another way of interpreting this. Could this triangle of lights actually represent a different trio? Could they be Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina instead? And the large light at their center. Does it represent something else? Could it be what created this world of ours? May I continue for a little bit longer? Thank you for listening to my theory. Do you know of the ancient Plates they find all over Sinnoh? One of them had this engraved on it. 'Two beings of time and space set free from the Original One.' I think this quote, too, points to the presence of another Pokémon. A Pokémon even more powerful than Dialga or Palkia. Does that sound plausible to you? I'm not quite sure how Giratina fits into this scheme of things, but...It's said that in the Distortion World, neither time nor space were stable. I think that tells us something about Giratina, the only Pokémon there. It must have been as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, the rulers of time and space. In some way, though, Giratina has to have a power opposite of theirs. I'm sorry this is so long. May I say one last bit? A long time ago, I wonder what sort of person painted this? Dialga's Roar of Time...Palkia's Spacial Rend...To the people back then, those Pokémon really must have appeared to rule over time and space. Seeing them must have shaken the people to their very core. This painting represents those feelings of awe, wonder, and everything else. It passed that memory to countless people, eventually becoming a myth...That's what I believe as a researcher of myths. I think I let myself get carried away and talked for far too long. I'm sorry, and thank you. Let's meet again."

Cynthia with Arceus

Cynthia makes an appearance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the dragon trio. If the player has an Arceus with a fateful encounter marker, when the main character visits the Ruins of Alph, it will reveal the Sinjoh Ruins. Inside, Cynthia is found, and will tell the player that Arceus will let him/her obtain a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. If the player returns with an Arceus caught at the Hall of Origin*, they will be informed she has returned to Sinnoh and the event will run without her.

  • There has not been an event in which the player can catch an Arceus at the Hall of Origin, as an Azure Flute is required for access to the Hall of Origin.

In Unova

Cynthia also makes an appearance in Pokémon Black and White. She can be battled in a house in Sazanami Town in the spring and summer. She can only be rebattled in the spring and summer. After defeating her, Shikimi and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house. In the summer, it can be visited by Aloe, Kamitsure, Iris and Fuuro.

Cynthia in the anime

Cynthia was first mentioned in Lucian's flashback in An Elite Meet and Greet along with the other members of the Sinnoh Elite Four. She made her first appearance in-person in Top-Down Training!.

She was first seen battling against Lucian with her Garchomp on television. She then arrived in Amity Square where she was studying ancient tablets. Paul then challenged her to a battle where she won easily. Cynthia later reappeared in Malice In Wonderland! where she battled Ash for the championship with a Rayquaza and lost, however it later emerged that Cynthia was an illusion created by a Mismagius.

The real Cynthia's next appearance was in Losing Its Lustrous and Double Team Turnover! where she tried to stop Team Galactic from stealing the Lustrous Orb. She also has been seen battling and defeating Aaron on television in Aiding the Enemy.

After that, Cynthia appeared in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend!, where she helped Ash and company protect the Lake guardians and put a stop to Team Galactic.

She was also in An Old Family Blend!, where she observed the Sinnoh League tournament alongside Charles Goodshow, making her the first current champion to appear at a Pokémon League Conference.

Her most recent appearance was in DP191 where she was seen on TV battling Flint. As mentioned by the battle's MC, Flint's Infernape managed to defeat two of her Pokémon. After a harsh battle, Garchomp defeated Infernape, earning Cynthia the victory.

Cynthia also had a cameo appearance at the beginning of Arceus and the Jewel of Life, where she was engaged in a battle against Tower Tycoon Palmer. Cynthia also had another cameo during the credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Pokémon Adventures

She first appeared in Eterna City before Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum just as the trio's starters were about to evolve. She then lent them some help before the Gym challenge against Gardenia. Afterwards, she invades the Galactic Eterna Building and frees the bike store owner with ease using Spiritomb's Psychic combined with the starters' attacks. She later appears after Platinum's Gym challenge in Pastoria City to help some injured Psyduck as she does in the games. To ensure the safety of Celestic Town, she then sent her Garchomp to guard the Celestic Ruins even without her presence.

Trivia

  • Cynthia is the only female NPC Champion.
  • In her Platinum team, Cynthia has both non-legendary Pokémon capable of learning the move Aura Sphere in Generation IV, Togekiss and Lucario. Coincidentally, both are the final evolutions of Pokémon that can be received as eggs from NPCs in Platinum, and both are the only male Pokémon in her team (due to their gender ratio).
  • In the games, Cynthia's Pokémon have perfect, or all 31, IVs.
  • Cynthia is the only Champion to appear in a Pokémon movie.
  • Cynthia's Japanese name may refer to shiro, white, as a counterpart to Cyrus's name referring to aka, red.
  • Cynthia is the only Champion to appear in all five versions of a generation.
    • Additionally, she is the only NPC Champion to be able to be battled outside the region she is Champion of. However, she's not the first Champion able to be battled outside of the Pokemon League.
  • In Platinum, when Cynthia visits the player at their Villa, she notes how relaxing it is there and that that she doesn't want to go home because her house is a complete mess. She goes on to say, "My house? Even the region is a secret!" This hints that she may live in a region other than Sinnoh.
    • She does appear in a house in Sazanami Town, in the Unova region; however, this is not her house, as she is "borrowing" it from Caitlin.

Names

Language Name Origin
Japanese シロナ Shirona A Japanese name for chard. Contains 白 shiro, meaning "white".
English, French, German Cynthia Possibly chosen due to similarity to "synthesis", or combining different pieces into one entity, which is a reference to the fact she combines several types in her arsenal. This name also refers to the Greek goddess Artemis, who is associated with the moon, which may be a parallel to Cyrus whose name refers to the sun.
Italian Camilla Probably derived from Camilla, an Amazon warrior described in the Aeneid.
Spanish Cintia Spanish equivalent of the name Cynthia.
Korean 난천 Nancheon
Chinese (Mandarin) 竹蘭 Zhúlán Literally "Bamboo orchid." May be derived from 竹葉蘭 Zhúyèlán (Arundina). May also be the transliteration of "Shiron" in Shirona. Rhymes with 木蘭 (Mulan).
