Trick (Japanese: トリック Trick) is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation III. It was TR38 in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and is TM109 in Generation IX.
Effect
Generations III and IV
The user switches held items with the target. If only one of them is holding an item, the item is moved to the other.
Trick fails if:
- Neither Pokémon has a held item.
- The user is a wild Pokémon.
- Either Pokémon is holding Griseous Orb.
- The target is behind a substitute.
- The target has Sticky Hold (even if it has no held item).
- Either Pokémon has Multitype.
- Used in the Trainer Tower in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
- Used at the Trainer Hill in Pokémon Emerald.
In Link Battles, battle facilities, Secret Bases, and the Trainer House, items stolen will be returned at the end of the battle.
In Japanese Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Trick can exchange Mail, but causes the Trick Mail bug. In international releases of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, as well as all releases of subsequent games, Trick will fail if either Pokémon is holding Mail. Trick also fails if either Pokémon is holding an e-Reader Berry.
Generation V onwards
Trick no longer switches a Trainer's Pokémon's items permanently; however, items switched in wild battles are permanently switched.
Trick fails if either the user or target holds:
- Any type of Mail
- Any Z-Crystal
- A Griseous Orb, if either Pokémon is Giratina
- A Plate, if either Pokémon is Arceus
- A Drive, if either Pokémon is Genesect
- A Mega Stone, if either Pokémon could use it to Mega Evolve
- A colored orb, if either Pokémon could use it to undergo Primal Reversion
- A Memory, if either Pokémon is Silvally
- A Rusted Sword, if either Pokémon is Zacian
- A Rusted Shield, if either Pokémon is Zamazenta
- A Booster Energy, if either Pokémon is one of the Paradox Pokémon (excluding Koraidon and Miraidon)
Trick can now exchange a Griseous Orb as long as neither the user nor the target is Giratina. Trick can now exchange items with a Pokémon that has Multitype (but still cannot exchange Plates with Arceus).
If powered up by a Psychium Z into Z-Trick, the user's Speed is raised two stages, then the move itself will fail after obtaining the Z-Power since it won't be possible to exchange its own Z-Crystal.
Trick will always fail when used in a Max Raid Battle or a Tera Raid Battle, regardless of the items or target. (It works as normal against Dynamax Pokémon in other battles.)
In Pokémon Sword and Shield, due to a presumed glitch in accounting for the removal of colored orbs, Trick would fail in versions 1.2.0 through 1.3.1 if it was used by or against Groudon or Kyogre and either the user or the target was not holding an item. This behavior was corrected in version 1.3.2.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, and Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, Trick is a move with 100% accuracy, and 17 PP. The user targets enemy in the front, swapping user's and enemy's held items. This move fails if at least one of the Pokémon is not holding an item. This move is affected by Taunt.
In Super Mystery Dungeon, Trick works even if either Pokémon is not holding an item.
Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Trick is Hoopa's first move. It is obtained by reaching level 4 and upgrading Confusion into it instead of Hyperspace Hole. The user creates a link between itself and an ally Pokémon using a ring, increasing both of their movement speeds and granting them each a shield for a short time. When the user uses Shadow Ball or performs a basic attack, the ring on the linked Pokémon also unleashes the same move or attack. The user can also use this move on itself, increasing user’s movement speed and granting itself a shield for a short time. Additionally, it increases the damage dealt by Shadow Ball. At level 10, this move also restores the linked ally Pokémon’s HP when it deals damage to opposing Pokémon. While in Unbound form, this move is replaced by Psybeam.

Trivia
- In Generation IV, despite being able to learn this move via Move Tutor, it will always fail when used by Arceus due to its Ability Multitype. In later generations, it can successfully use the move as long as neither Pokémon is holding a Plate.
