Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is an archeologist who is also the Champion of the Sinnoh region's Pokémon League in Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

In the core series games
Character profile
Cynthia is the Champion of the Sinnoh region, who makes her first appearance in Diamond and Pearl. She also the first female, non-playable character Champion introduced in the core series. Cynthia is an archeologist who investigates myths involving Pokémon and is described as mysterious, referring to herself as "the researcher of myths." With her interest in mythology and history, she spends her time researching and exploring various sites associated with Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region. Because of this Cynthia has a wide knowledge of Pokémon and their relationships with people, creating some theories of her own. She can get carried away with these topics, often talking for long periods of time or theorizing in places where she shouldn't be. Cynthia realizes this behavior, catching herself and apologizing whenever it happens. Similarly, she speaks politely, frequently asking the player if they are doing well and uses phrases such as "pardon".

In the games
Cynthia tends to enjoy relaxation and travel, visiting the villas owned by Caitlin and the player found in Unova and in Sinnoh's Battle Zone respectively. In Platinum, she expresses that part of the reason for this is that she is typically a messy person, and has research papers thrown around the house. Cynthia also enjoys the piano, claiming that she enjoys the sound, listening to it with both her body and spirit.
In Diamond and Pearl
Cynthia helps the main character against Team Galactic in a point in the game. She will give the player HM01 in Eterna City. She is also found on 214 after the player has defeated Crasher Wake and received the Fen. She gives the player the SecretPotion to get past the Psyduck group on 210 to get to Celestic Town. She then gives the player the Old Charm to give to her grandmother. She is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time researching and exploring various sites associated with legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region.

Her family lives in Celestic Town, although her own hometown is unknown. She is implied to have helped Rowan with his Pokédex and embarked on an adventure as a child, similar to the player.
Cynthia has a large love and passion for Pokémon and is implied to have helped Professor Rowan with his Pokédex, embarking on an adventure as a child, similar to that of the player. Cynthia can be seen as a generous person, providing the player with multiple items and information throughout their journey, including Pokémon Eggs. While generous, she is also very appreciative of the player's efforts. At the Pokémon League, she acknowledges the player's strength as a Trainer and their bond with Pokémon. She enjoys fun and challenging battles and isn't easy to give up.

Later, she reappears as the Pokémon League Champion.
Cynthia's known relatives include her grandmother, her grandfather, and a younger sister, all of which go unnamed. Her family lives in Celestic Town, although her own hometown was not mentioned, even going as far to say that her home region is a secret. Cynthia bears a striking resemblance to Volo and Cogita, implying some form of ancestry, however the direct correlation between the three, is unknown.

|sprite=DP Cynthia.png
Cynthia is an adult woman with long curly platinum blonde hair that reaches behind her knees. Bangs fall over her left eye and two large side curls fall in front of her shoulders, curling inward, covering her ears and the back of the neck. She has thin eyebrows. Cynthia's eyes are thin, but round, and point outward ending with thick eyelashes. She has gray irises. While their relation is unknown, she carries similar design attributes with that of Volo and Cogita, possessing similar facial structures and colors.

|class=Champion
Her clothing and design has remained mainly the same between all of her core series appearances. Her hair has two decorations on both sides of her head, resembling two black teardrops with a gold stripe on each tear. One of Cynthia's most iconic attributes is her long and heavy black coat that drapes over half way down her legs, ending in dark black fur trimming. The coat forms a V-neck with the openings connecting to another with another teardrop-like ornament that is silver in color, potentially acting like a zipper, that ends on the front of her chest. Two more silvery buttons appear next to this ornament. The coat's long sleeves end at her wrists also ending in dark black fur trimming. Cynthia also owns a scarf of the same black fluffy material as the fur trimming on her coat, covering a majority of her neck. Underneath, Cynthia owns a plain, dark-gray v-neck dress shirt with long sleeves ending at around her hips. Cynthia's long light gray dress pants also lack much detail other than seams. The pants however, do cover her ankles, leaving no form of skin in sight. The toe tips of Cynthia's black pointed high-heel shoes have a thin gold stripe that end at the soles. A majority of her shoes are covered by her pant legs. Artwork without her coat and hair decorations are seen in concept art for Diamond and Pearl.

Quotes
Like in Diamond and Pearl, the player first meets Cynthia at Eterna City, where she takes notice of the Pokédex that Professor Rowan has given them. She explains to them that she is a researcher of myth, and that Sinnoh has many Pokémon to discover to record in the Pokédex. After her explanation of the statue based on the Pokémon of Myth, she provides the player with 01, and before leaving, asks the player to give her regards to Professor Rowan. After Jupiter's defeat in the Team Galactic Eterna Building, Cynthia meets the player at the cycle shop and happily gives the player a Togepi Egg, saying it will help them with their Pokédex.

Valor Lakefront
After the player defeats Crasher Wake in Pastoria City and follows a Team Galactic Grunt towards Lake Valor, the player runs into Cynthia again at Valor Lakefront, where she is researching the Azelf, however, the lake is currently closed to the public. She asks the player if they have seen the wild Psyduck that appear at 210 and gives them the SecretPotion that would help cure the Pokémon's headache. The player makes their way to Route 210, with Cynthia appearing again once the Psyduck have left. This time, she has a big favor to ask the player, and gives them the Old Charm to deliver to her grandmother in Celestic Town. At Celestic Town, she takes notice of the bomb held by Team Galactic, having second thoughts about how harmless they actually were and how their usage of Pokémon is unacceptable. She directs the player towards Canalave City and it's library, if they want to continue work on their Pokédex.
:"Oh , hello , long time no see! How is your Pokédex filling up? I came to research the folklore about the lake, but... Well, it doesn't appear as if the lake is open to the public now. Have you heard the folklore about it? They say there is an island inside the lake. And inside that island is a mirage of a Pokémon . No one must enter the chamber of that Pokémon... Oh that's right! i had to talk to you about something else... He's your friend? He's more impatient than energetic, isn't he? So, getting back to what i started saying earlier... Have you seen the group of Psyduck on Route 210 ?
 " You haven't seen them? By the café on Route 210.
 "Yes that's right. By the café on Route 210. There is a group of Psyduck huddled with their heads in their, uh, hands...? Anyway, what you should do is use medicine on the Psyduck. You're working on a Pokédex, so it would be worthwile for you. I went on a big adventure with a Pokédex when I was younger. I hope you meet every kind of Pokémon there is to see. It may help you with the secret of the mirage Pokémon. See you later!

Route 210
At the summit of Mount Coronet, Cynthia arrives at the Spear Pillar once Cyrus has been dragged into the Distortion World by a shadowy figure. Providing context of Sinnoh's origins, she explains that there is a third member of the Pokémon of Myth alongside Dialga and Palkia, a Pokémon named Giratina. Because of Giratina's presence, space-time is distorting from the portal leading to the Distortion World. Cynthia and the player lead into the Distortion World where she guides the player through the world in order to confront Giratina. Throughout the Distortion World, Cynthia explains the properties of the location, the lack of Pokémon, the abnormality of space and time, and the balance the Lake guardians have with the Pokémon of Myth. After the defeat of Cyrus and Giratina, Cynthia and the player fall back into the Sendoff Spring, where she offers her thanks on the situation, and tells the player to meet Professor Rowan who was worried. She splits paths with the players once again, and, like in Diamond and Pearl, she is fought as the Champion of the Pokémon League.
:"Oh, good. You used the SecretPotion I gave you. Psyduck are known to suffer from chronic headaches. But no one's been able to figure out what triggers the headaches. Oh yes! Can i ask you a big favor? I want to deliver this Old Charm to my grandma in Celestic Town. I know there are some rare Pokémon between here and Celestic Town, so it will be worth your while to go.
 " My grandma has this sort of bossy atmosphere about her. I think you'll recognize her right away. Yes i'm sure you will. She's the elder of Celestic Town. And the location... Look on your Town Map. You can't miss it. Ok, I'm counting on you! See you again on the road!

During the post-game, she will appear at the Celestic Ruins, explaining the context. Cynthia theorizes about the three lights, painted on the cave wall, such as what Pokémon they could be or if it represents something greater. She connects it to the writing that is engraved on the Plates found throughout Sinnoh, and how there may be a another Pokémon mentioned, called Arceus. Her theory implies that this Pokémon is stronger than Dialga or Palkia, but is unsure about where Giratina may fit into the bigger picture. She thanks the player for listening and takes off.

;Pokémon League
The player meets Cynthia again at Snowpoint City after they have found every Pokémon in Sinnoh. Here, she provides the player with words of encouragement before they boat to the Fight Area, and how she is proud of them. She can later appear in the player's villa in the Resort Area, and takes mention of her love for the piano.
*Before battle (initial fight)
:"Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"

*Before battle (rematch)
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
:"One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia makes an appearance in the Sinjoh Ruins, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the Pokémon of Myth. If the player has an Arceus with a fateful encounter marker or from the Hall of Origin when they visit the Ruins of Alph, the player will be teleported to the Sinjoh Ruins. Inside a cabin at the ruins, the player will find Cynthia, who will tell the player that Arceus will let them obtain a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. If the player returns to the Sinjoh Ruins with another Arceus (that doesn't have the same origin as the one they used the first time), they will be informed that Cynthia has returned to Sinnoh, and the event will run without her.

*After sending out last Pokémon
Generation V
:"I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"
During Generation V, Cynthia appears in a villa belonging to Caitlin in Undella Town, where she can be battled. She leaves after being defeated for the first time and afterwards reappears during the spring and summer seasons. During spring, she can be rebattled once a day. After defeating her, Shauntal and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house in the spring, and, in Black and White only, Lenora, Elesa, Iris, and Skyla visit in the summer.

*During battle (less than half HP)
In Black and White, she speaks about a young Trainer who had defeated her, and mentions that the same Trainer also defeated Giratina, referring to the player character during the events of Platinum.
:"I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"

*When defeated
In B2W2, Cynthia can also be battled in the Champions Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She is the only woman who participates in this tournament, with Iris being excluded.
:"Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"

In Platinum
Generation VII
When encountered in Eterna City, she will also give the player an Egg from which Togepi will hatch.
In SMUSUM, Cynthia appears in Alola's Battle Tree as an opponent that the player can battle and subsequently recruit.

After Giratina appears in Spear Pillar and takes Cyrus down with it, Cynthia rushes to the scene and assists the player during their trip to the Distortion World. She then expresses that everything that happened was destined, even though she wished that she was the one who battled Giratina.
Pokémon
Cynthia has appeared in at least one game in each generation between Generations IV and VIII, and has used a variety of Pokémon both in type and selection, between them all. In Platinum and in rematches in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, none of her Pokémon share any types with one another and has the most diverse Pokémon usage in comparison to other Champions in her team of six, owning 11 of the 12 possible types. Her Pokémon usage from Platinum is reflected in Volo's team in Legends: Arceus, owning the exact same Pokémon with exception of Milotic.

After beating the game, if the player visits Celestic Town Ruins, she will come and explain what the ruins mean.
Her Cynthia has seen usage in every game where she has battled the player, and has appeared in numerous pieces of media and merchandise on her own. Tied with Red's Pikachu in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia's Garchomp rests at level 88 in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as the highest level Pokémon owned by an NPC outside of battle facilities.

My name is Cynthia. I'm a Trainer just like you. I've been studying Pokémon mythology lately, just out of curiosity. Here in Eterna City, there is a statue of an ancient Pokémon. Have you seen it already? According to myth, it was an extremely powerful Pokémon. Who knows? You may encounter something like it while you're traveling with your Pokédex. Oh, I know! Try using this. It should be helpful. Remember, the hidden move Cut can be used in the field. It will let you go places that were previously inaccessible to you. That's important for filling up your Pokédex, right? Then luck be with you, young Trainer! Oh, there's one last thing! Please give my regards to Prof. Rowan."

*After entering the Hall of Fame
:"This cave painting...It's always been described this way. The light in the center represents either Dialga or Palkia appearing at the Spear Pillar. The three lights around it were thought to be Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. May I continue? But, then, I realized that there may be another way of interpreting this. Could this triangle of lights actually represent a different trio? Could they be Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina instead? And the large light at their center. Does it represent something else? Could it be Arceus? May I continue for a little bit longer? Thank you for listening to my theory. Do you know of the ancient Plates they find all over Sinnoh? One of them had this engraved on it. 'Two beings of time and space set free from the Original One.' I think this quote, too, points to the presence of another Pokémon. A Pokémon even more powerful than Dialga or Palkia. Does that sound plausible to you? I'm not quite sure how Giratina fits into this scheme of things, but... It's said that in the Distortion World, neither time nor space were stable. I think that tells us something about Giratina, the only Pokémon there. It must have been as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, the rulers of time and space. In some way, though, Giratina has to have a power opposite of theirs. I'm sorry this is so long. May I say one last bit? A long time ago, I wonder what sort of person painted this? Dialga's Roar of Time...Palkia's Spacial Rend...To the people back then, those Pokémon really must have appeared to rule over time and space. Seeing them must have shaken the people to their very core. This painting represents those feelings of awe, wonder, and everything else. It passed that memory to countless people, eventually becoming a myth...That's what I believe as a researcher of myths. I think I let myself get carried away and talked for far too long. I'm sorry, and thank you. Let's meet again."

Cynthia makes an appearance in the Sinjoh Ruins, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the creation trio. If the player has an Arceus with a fateful encounter marker, when the main character visits the Ruins of Alph, it will reveal the Sinjoh Ruins. Inside, Cynthia is found, and will tell the player that Arceus will let him/her obtain a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. If the player returns with an Arceus caught at the Hall of Origin, which has not yet had its event item released, they will be informed she has returned to Sinnoh and the event will run without her.

Cynthia appears in a house in Undella Town, where she can be battled. She leaves after being defeated and afterwards reappears during spring and summer. During the springtime, she can be rebattled once a day. After defeating her, Shauntal and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house in the spring, and Lenora, Elesa, Iris, and Skyla visit in the summer. She speaks about a Lucas Dawn who defeated her, and mentions that that Trainer defeated Giratina, referring to the events of Platinum.

Initial visit and battle
{{Party/Single
:"What's this?"
|color=Cynthia color
:"What an uncanny resemblance... It's surprising to meet another Trainer who has intense eyes like that Lucas Dawn. What's your name? ... OK. I'll remember that! <Player>, nice to meet you. I'm Cynthia. I'm a Pokémon Trainer, too, like you. I have an insatiable curiosity for researching Pokémon myths."
|bordercolor=Cynthia color dark
:"I'm sure you know about Undella Town's Abyssal Ruins, right? I'm staying here at my friend's villa so I can investigate them."
|headcolor=Cynthia color light
:"In order to get to know each other better as Pokémon Trainers, I would like our Pokémon to have a match. Would you care to be my opponent?"

::No: "Ha ha. You prefer to take things slowly and rationally, am I right? When you're ready, come and talk to me. I'll be happy to see you."

:"Oh. You've had a chance to get ready? I do want our Pokémon to have a match... Are you prepared to be my opponent?"

::Yes: "Before I send out my Pokémon, my heart always begins to race... Interesting... My Pokémon in their Poké Balls are radiating a happy feeling. Are you the reason? What are you?"

*After sending out last Pokémon
:"When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
*During battle (less than half HP)
:"You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
*When defeated
:"My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"

*After being defeated
:"That was beyond my expectation! What an exceptional battle! You certainly bear a resemblance to that Trainer who faced Giratina... Oh, pardon me. I was just thinking out loud. I love being here in spring and summer. I can't stay all year, because there's so much to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. You're a great Trainer, and it would make me happy to see you again sometime."

*Afterword
:"I love to come here in spring and summer. But there are a lot of things to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. I'd be delighted to see you again. You're an awesome Pokémon Trainer!"

During the Spring and rematch
*Before battle
:"How terrific to see you again! I've got to tell you... My Pokémon are excited to battle yours. Would you care to be my opponent?"
::No: "Oh, what a pity. Summers in Undella Town make me feel like I'm on holiday. I forget about battling! But in spring, I feel like getting worked up with a good battle."
:"I can tell that my Pokémon are excited about battling your Pokémon... Would you care to be my opponent?"
::Yes: "This will be such fun! No holds barred!"

*After sending out last Pokémon
:"When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
*During battle (less than half HP)
:"You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
*When defeated
:"My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"

*After being defeated
:"For some reason, this reminds me of a time when I told a Trainer like you to go see many, many more places and to meet many more Pokémon. For me, it has really been worthwhile to come all the way to far Unova. Why? Because... I met you, and my world got wider!"

*Before battle<!-- (subsequent? variant?)-->
:"To live their lives to the fullest, people and Pokémon need the chance to throw themselves into battle against the fiercest opposition. That's why I want to battle you. How about it?"

:: No: "I'm a little disappointed. I know you can battle on bigger stages than you've done so far! It's so plain to me that your light can shine brighter than this..."

:"Are you prepared? Let's battle at full strength and see how bright our lights can shine!"

::Yes: "As our Pokémon meet in battle, I'll learn more about you and how you've taken care of them."

*After sending out last Pokémon
:"When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
*During battle (less than half HP)
:"You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
*When defeated
:"My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"

*After being defeated
:"When you meet Trainers, battle them to learn about the kind of people they are. Observe the Pokémon they choose, which moves they taught them, and which items the Pokémon hold. You don't need words at such times... If you want to know more about me... Come to Sinnoh!"

During the Summer
:"I'd love to live here...But if I did, there would be a mountain of research piled up...Am I right? Cynthia, enough for now! Next time, clean up."
:"What is necessary for becoming stronger than you are now? My answer is simply loving Pokemon with all your heart. That's how I am, so that's all I can say."
:"Hmm. This is difficult. I was greedy and bought a lot of swimsuits, but now I can't pick which one to wear."
:"Here's my problem. I have a Black and White swimsuit and a Black and White swimsuit...Which one would look better on me?"
:"Once every few years, the Champions of each region gather and compete to see who is the strongest! An interesting idea, don't you agree?"

Cynthia forms a sync pair with Cynthia, Kommo-o, Giratina Giratina, Gastrodon Gastrodon, and Lucario in Masters EX. Both her Garchomp and Lucario are capable of Mega Evolving. Cynthia became a playable sync pair on January 1, 2020.

In the anime
Cynthia first appeared as an NPC during the first chapter of PML Arc. She also made notable appearances later in the PML Arc, Legendary Adventures, and the Villain Arc.

Cynthia was first mentioned in Lucian's flashback in An Elite Meet and Greet!, along with the members of the Sinnoh Elite Four.

She was first seen in Top-Down Training!, where she was battling against Lucian with her Cynthia on television. She then arrived in Amity Square where she was studying ancient tablets, where she met Ash, ashfr, and Paul. Paul challenged her to a battle, but Cynthia won easily. She mentioned that she was like Paul in her youth, determined to win with the strongest Pokémon. After the battle, because Nurse Joy was busy, she and Brock personally healed Paul's Pokémon, after convincing him to take them to a Pokémon Center. Later, back at the Amity Square Ruins, she reads something written there: "When every life meets another life, something will be born". This is constantly flashed back to by Ash. Cynthia then decides to go toward Celestic Town, where she plans to study the legend of Dialga, Palkia, and the Legendary artifacts.

An illusion of Cynthia, created by a Mismagius, appeared in Malice In Wonderland!. The illusion battled Ash for the title of Champion with a Rayquaza and lost.
Pokémon UNITE
Cynthia and her Cynthia appear in UNITE as an enemy Trainer to fight during the Legacy Trainer Showdown event between September 9, 2022 and October 6, 2022. It takes place on Theia Sky Ruins. Her Garchomp starts the battle as Gible and can evolve to Gabite and then Garchomp during the battle. The other members of her team are Korrina, Raihan, Leon, and Green. The event later returned between April 21, 2023 and May 21, 2023.

Cynthia's next appearance was in Losing Its Lustrous! and Double Team Turnover!, where she, along with Ash, ashfr, Professor Carolina and Officer Jenny's police officers, tried to stop Team Galactic from stealing the Legendary artifacts.
Cynthia and her Garchomp also appear as an enemy Trainer in the recurring Theia Sky Ruins event. It also takes place on Theia Sky Ruins. This event has Casual, Intermediate, Expert, and Extreme difficulties. The composition of the opposing team varies depending on the event and the difficulty. The full team consists of herself, Cynthia, Raihan, Leon, and Green. In Cynthia themed events, Cynthia's team includes Korrina, Raihan, Leon, and Green. On the Casual difficulty, all four of the other trainers are replaced by Ace Trainers. On the Intermediate difficulty, only Leon and Green are replaced by Ace Trainers. In a Leon themed event, Cythnia only appears on the Expert and Extreme difficulties, being replaced by an Ace Trainer on lower difficulties. In this mode, Cynthia and her Garchomp never use Holowear.

In Aiding the Enemy!, Cynthia battled with Aaron for the title of Champion of the Sinnoh region, which she won. Ash and his friends commented that while Aaron was strong enough to be a member of the Elite Four, Cynthia was far stronger than him.
Unlike other Trainers in this game, Cynthia and the non-Ace Trainer members of her team are represented with two-dimensional artwork instead of three-dimensional models. In the pre-battle splash screen, Cynthia has a custom Unite Snapshot depicting her and her Garchomp with two dimensional artwork. (The normal display of the Unite License/Holowear is not used.) This means her Battle Item is not shown. However, she uses X Attack.

Cynthia then appeared in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend!, where she helped Ash and his friends protect the lake guardians and put a stop to Team Galactic.
Cynthia appears as a Background element for a Trainer's Unite Snapshot. This uses the same artwork as her own Unite Snapshot, but does not feature Garchomp. Her outfit can be worn as a Trainer Outfit by players. (It does not consist of separate items and cannot be worn with any additional items.) This outfit is rendered as a model, unlike Cynthia.

In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Flint revealed that he intends to challenge Cynthia for her title of Champion.
Quotes
Cynthia/Quotes

She also appeared in An Old Family Blend!, where she observed the Sinnoh League tournament alongside Charles Goodshow, making her the first current Champion to appear at a Pokémon League Conference. While watching, she showed a deep interest in the battle between Ash and Paul. At the end of the competition, she personally delivered the trophy to the winner, Tobias, who had won the Sinnoh League and the right to face the Elite Four.

Main series
Cynthia (anime)
Cynthia is a recurring character in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon the Series: Black & White. Her physical debut was in Top-Down Training!, where she defeated Ash's rival Paul in a Full Battle. She has assisted Ash and ashfr on several occasions, helping them fight both Team Galactic in Sinnoh and Team Rocket in Unova.

She appeared in  Memories Are Made of Bliss!, where Ash and his friends watched her battle with Flint for the title of Champion. Flint's Infernape managed to defeat two of her Pokémon, but Cynthia defeated Flint's Infernape, earning Cynthia the victory.
In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Cynthia returned as one of the top eight Pokémon Trainers in the world within the World Coronation Series and took part in the Masters Eight Tournament.

Cynthia also had a cameo appearance at the beginning of Arceus and the Jewel of Life, where she was engaged in a battle against Tower Tycoon. Cynthia also made a cameo in the credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
A Ripple in Time
A version of Cynthia based on her Cynthia appears in a cameo in A Ripple in Time. She is seen trying to pick out ice cream at a fair stall at the Pokémon League.

Cynthia reappeared in BW085 and met up with Ash again in Virbank City in Unova. She told Ash, Iris and Cilan of the "Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup". Ash and ashfr then decided to come with Cynthia and participate. On the way to Cynthia's villa, she almost hit an injured Meloetta with her car but stopped in time. She figured out it was suffering from a fever and gave Ash, Iris, and Cilan instructions on how to make it feel better. She asked Iris and Cilan to find a berry for her while she and Ash find some ice. She is revealed to have a Glaceon which uses ice beam to freeze the water. They break the ice and take it to Meloetta. After it recovered a little, Iris asked Cynthia if she could battle her and her Garchomp while she used Iris. She agreed and the battle got underway. Even though Axew learned Giga Impact during the battle, Garchomp proved to be way too strong. Cynthia stopped Garchomp from attacking and ended the battle before Axew could get hurt. In BW086, Ash and his friends arrived in Undella Town, the location of Cynthia's villa, where Ash was reunited with Dawn for the first time since his journey in Sinnoh. After that, Cynthia watched the battle between Dawn and Cilan. In BW087, the next episode, Cynthia participated in an exhibition match between Caitlin followed by the begining of the "Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup".

In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Pokémon Adventures
Cynthia first appears in Vs. Roserade II where she is seen correctly predicting the evolutions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's Tru, Chimler, and Platinum. After laughing at Dia and Pearl's Manzai, she decided to give Platinum some advice for her upcoming Gym challenge against Gardenia. Afterwards, she invades the Galactic Eterna Building and frees the bike store owner, Rad Rickshaw, with ease using her Spiritomb's Psychic combined with attacks of Diamond's Tru and Platinum's Prinplup. She later appears at Mr. Backlot's mansion where she investigates a case of missing Psyduck and takes the group to Route 210 and uses the Secret Potion to cure the Psyduck roadblock of their headaches. After meeting up with her grandmother, Cynthia takes the one Psyduck that belonged to a Trainer back to its owner, lending her Garchomp to them for protection. In Vs Honchkrow during Diamond and Pearl's infiltration of the Galactic HQ, she personally challenges Cyrus to a one on one battle, despite her best efforts and powerful Pokémon she is unable to defeat him and he escapes with her too exhausted to follow. Later, she takes Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum to the Spear Pillar where they fight their final battle against him and the Legendary Dialga and Palkia.
Cynthia has loved cycling since her childhood and often races with her Cynthia.

History
HeartGold & SoulSilver
In All About Arceus IX, Cynthia is seen in the Johto region, where she spots Dialga and Palkia flying towards Sinnoh. She is then approached by Palmer, a Frontier Brain who also hails from Sinnoh.

Diamond & Pearl
Cynthia first appears in Ring Around the Roserade I. She is first seen in Eterna City, where she correctly predicts the evolutions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's Tru, Chimler, and Platinum. In the following chapter, after laughing at Diamond and Pearl's comedy routine, Cynthia offers to give Platinum advice for her upcoming Gym battle against Gardenia. Once finished, Cynthia attacks the Team Galactic Eterna Building in order to rescue Rad Rickshaw, who was kidnapped by Team Galactic.

In Suffering Psyduck, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum encounter Cynthia again at the Pokémon Mansion. Cynthia reveals that Mr. Backlot, the owner of the mansion, asked her to investigate a Psyduck that went missing. She takes the three to 210, where a large group of Psyduck have clustered together, creating a roadblock that prevents anyone from passing through the route. Using a SecretPotion, Cynthia cures the Psyduck of their headaches, causing them to disperse and allow travel through Route 210.

Afterward, Cynthia and the trio meet with Cynthia's grandmother, who had been forced to stay at the Café Cabin due to the roadblock preventing her from going back to Celestic Town. Cynthia decides to have her grandmother take the trio to Celestic Town while she goes off to return one of the Psyduck to its owner. Before leaving, Cynthia lends her Cynthia to her grandmother for protection.

In Halting Honchkrow, Cynthia appears at the Team Galactic HQ to confront Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic. Cynthia reveals that her intentions were to take revenge on Cyrus for attacking Celestic Town, her hometown. Despite her best efforts, Cynthia's rage leads to her commanding Garchomp to attack with Draco Meteor, which it had yet to master. The attack heavily damages Cyrus's Gyarados, but fails to actually knock it out. With Garchomp left exhausted after using the move, Cyrus bids Cynthia farewell and heads to the Spear Pillar to begin his plans.

Cynthia, realizing that Cyrus intends to summon Pokémon of Myth, decides to follow after him to prevent the two Pokémon from being awakened. As she heads out of the building, Cynthia comes across Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, who had fought Team Galactic to free Lake guardians from their clutches. The trio join Cynthia and travel to the Spear Pillar in order to put a stop to Cyrus's ambitions. By the time the group arrived at the Spear Pillar, Cyrus had already successfully summoned Dialga and Palkia and had them fight each other. The clash between the two Legendary Pokémon creates distortions in time and space that slowly begin to engulf the Sinnoh region. The distortions, combined with her injures, prevent Cynthia from being much help to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum during the battle against Cyrus.

During the battle, an explosion causes Cynthia to drop a scroll containing information on Dialga and Palkia. After translating the scroll, Platinum relays the information to Diamond and Pearl, who successfully free Dialga and Palkia from Cyrus's control. Now free, Dialga and Palkia combine their powers to defeat Cyrus and stop the distortions affecting Sinnoh.

Platinum
In The Final Dimensional Duel I, Cynthia is taken to Veilstone City by her grandmother. Cynthia is chastised by her grandmother over her defeat at the hands of Cyrus. Cynthia's grandmother reveals she plans on training Cynthia to fully master learning Draco Meteor.

In The Final Dimensional Duel X, Cynthia appears in Sunyshore City, where she defeats Charon and Giratina with a fully-mastered Draco Meteor. When asked how she knew Giratina would appear in Sunyshore, Cynthia reveals that being trapped in the Distortion World left Giratina with the desire to see the sun. Afterward, Cynthia takes her grandmother to the Café Cabin as thanks for the special training.

Trivia
Trivia
* In the games, Cynthia's Pokémon have perfect, or all 31, IVs.<!--Can someone test if this still holds true in BW?-->
* After the player heads into the Distortion World in Platinum, should the player use the portal to head back into Spear Pillar, Cynthia will still be there, while also being in the Distortion World.
* Cynthia has appeared in every main series Pokémon game since her debut in .
* In the Sinnoh-based games, Milotic is her only Pokémon used that was not introduced during that generation.
* Cynthia is the only Champion to appear in a Pokémon movie, discounting Gary Oak, the anime counterpart to Blue, and Iris, who is not Champion in the anime.
**In Generation IV, it is also the only Pokémon used by her that is not a dual type.
* In Platinum, when Cynthia visits the player at their Villa, she notes how relaxing it is there and that she doesn't want to go home because her house is a complete mess. She goes on to say, "My house? Even the region is a secret!" hinting that she may live in a region other than Sinnoh.<!--Please don't add that this is the villa she is staying in in Undella Town; it belongs to Caitlin-->
* In Platinum, Cynthia's Togekiss has the Hustle Ability, despite having no moves that benefit from the Ability.
* Cynthia shares many similarities with Volo:
** Task 20, where the player must meet up with Volo, is called The Researcher of Myths, a title by which Cynthia also refers to herself.
** In his final battle, Volo wears a necklace with a teardrop-shaped ornament that resembles the ornament on Cynthia's dress. However, Cogita's dress more fully resembles Cynthia's, including the teardrop-shaped ornament, so the significance of the ornament is uncertain.
** In the final battle against him, Volo shares five Pokémon with Cynthia's Platinum team: Spiritomb, Garchomp, Togekiss, Roserade, and Lucario. The only Pokémon that Volo does not use from said team is Milotic, as it is not present in Legends: Arceus; he instead uses Hisuian Arcanine. Like Cynthia, Volo always begins the battle by sending out Spiritomb.
** The music that plays before Volo's final battle begins is an arrangement of Cynthia's battle theme. His final battle theme is an arrangement of Cynthia's encounter and battle themes.
** After his final battle, Volo vows to meet Arceus, and in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia meets Arceus during the Sinjoh Ruins event.

Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is an archeologist who is also the Champion of the Sinnoh region's Pokémon League in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl.

In the core series games

Character profile

Cynthia is the Champion of the Sinnoh region, who makes her first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. She can get carried away with these topics, often talking for long periods of time or theorizing in places where she shouldn't be.[4] Cynthia realizes this behavior, catching herself and apologizing whenever it happens.[5] Similarly, she speaks politely, frequently asking the player if they are doing well and uses phrases such as "pardon".

Appearance

Cynthia's appearance without her coat can be seen in her concept art for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Cynthia owns a Pokédex and, in Generation VII, she has a Key Stone. Where these items are held are unknown.

Role

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl

Website blurbBDSP: A mysterious person who shows up at many points along your journey. She’s investigating myths about Pokémon.

Cynthia makes her first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, where she meets up with the player at various points during their journey.

She will first meet the player in Eterna City, where she takes an interest in them for owning a Pokédex given to them by Professor Rowan. She explains to the player about her interest in mythology and about Sinnoh's Pokémon of Myth, she then offers HM01 (Cut) to the player. After the player defeats Crasher Wake and Maylene, and follows a Team Galactic Grunt found in Pastoria City to Lake Valor, the player runs into Cynthia again at Valor Lakefront, where she is researching the Pokémon of the lake, however, the lake is currently closed to the public. She asks the player if they have seen the wild Psyduck that appear at Route 210, giving them the SecretPotion that would help cure the Pokémon's headache. Once the player makes their way to Route 210, Cynthia appears again once the Psyduck have left. This time, she has a big favor to ask the player, and gives them the Old Charm to deliver to her grandmother at Celestic Town. In Hearthome City, Cynthia speaks to the player at the gym after they have defeated Fantina, making mention of Team Galactic and their dangerous acts. She later appears at the Pokémon League as the Champion, serving as the player's final obstacle.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, she can also be battled against at the Battle Tower.

Pokémon Platinum

In Pokémon Platinum, Cynthia has the same role as she did in Diamond and Pearl, but has an extended role in this game, allowing for more character interactions and events.

After her explanation of the statue based on the Pokémon of Myth, she provides the player with HM01 (Cut), and before leaving, asks the player to give her regards to Professor Rowan. After Jupiter's defeat in the Team Galactic Eterna Building, Cynthia meets the player at the cycle shop and happily gives the player a Togepi Egg, saying it will help them with their Pokédex.

After the player defeats Crasher Wake in Pastoria City and follows a Team Galactic Grunt towards Lake Valor, the player runs into Cynthia again at Valor Lakefront, where she is researching the Pokémon of the lake, however, the lake is currently closed to the public. She asks the player if they have seen the wild Psyduck that appear at Route 210 and gives them the SecretPotion that would help cure the Pokémon's headache.

During the post-game, she will appear at the Celestic Ruins, explaining the context. Cynthia theorizes about the three lights, painted on the cave wall, such as what Pokémon they could be or if it represents something greater. She connects it to the writing that is engraved on the Plates found throughout Sinnoh, and how there may be a another Pokémon mentioned, called the Original One. Her theory implies that this Pokémon is stronger than Dialga or Palkia, but is unsure about where Giratina may fit into the bigger picture. She thanks the player for listening and takes off.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia makes an appearance in the Sinjoh Ruins, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the Pokémon of Myth.

Generation V

During Generation V, Cynthia appears in a villa belonging to Caitlin in Undella Town, where she can be battled. She leaves after being defeated for the first time and afterwards reappears during the spring and summer seasons. During spring, she can be rebattled once a day. After defeating her, Shauntal and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house in the spring, and, in Pokémon Black and White only, Lenora, Elesa, Iris, and Skyla visit in the summer.

In Pokémon Black and White, she speaks about a young Trainer who had defeated her, and mentions that the same Trainer also defeated Giratina, referring to the player character during the events of Platinum.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Cynthia can also be battled in the Champions Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She is the only woman who participates in this tournament, with Iris being excluded.

Generation VII

In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Cynthia appears in Alola's Battle Tree as an opponent that the player can battle and subsequently recruit.

Pokémon

Cynthia has appeared in at least one game in each generation between Generations IV and VIII, and has used a variety of Pokémon both in type and selection, between them all. In Pokémon Platinum and in rematches in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, none of her Pokémon share any types with one another and has the most diverse Pokémon usage in comparison to other Champions in her team of six, owning 11 of the 12 possible types. Her Pokémon usage from Platinum is reflected in Volo's team in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, owning the exact same Pokémon with exception of Milotic.

Her Garchomp has seen usage in every game where she has battled the player, and has appeared in numerous pieces of media and merchandise on her own. Tied with Red's Pikachu in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia's Garchomp rests at level 88 in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as the highest level Pokémon owned by an NPC outside of battle facilities.

Pokémon UNITE

Cynthia and her Garchomp appear in Pokémon UNITE as an enemy Trainer to fight during the Legacy Trainer Showdown event between September 9, 2022 and October 6, 2022.

Cynthia and her Garchomp also appear as an enemy Trainer in the recurring Solo Challenge event.

History

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

In All About Arceus IX, Cynthia is seen in the Johto region, where she spots Dialga and Palkia flying towards Sinnoh. She is then approached by Palmer, a Frontier Brain who also hails from Sinnoh.

Diamond & Pearl arc

Cynthia first appears in Ring Around the Roserade I. She is first seen in Eterna City, where she correctly predicts the evolutions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's Tru, Chimler, and Piplup.

She takes the three to Route 210, where a large group of Psyduck have clustered together, creating a roadblock that prevents anyone from passing through the route.

Before leaving, Cynthia lends her Garchomp to her grandmother for protection.

Cynthia, realizing that Cyrus intends to summon Dialga and Palkia, decides to follow after him to prevent the two Pokémon from being awakened. As she heads out of the building, Cynthia comes across Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, who had fought Team Galactic to free Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf from their clutches.

Platinum arc

Pokémon

Gabite → Garchomp
Cynthia's Garchomp
Main article: Cynthia's Garchomp

Garchomp is Cynthia's strongest Pokémon and her main battler. Garchomp is well trained enough to even battle without her Trainer giving commands. She battled Cyrus and his Pokémon in the Celestic Ruins but he managed to outsmart her and use her moves against her for his own gain. She was later used against him in the Galactic HQ holding a grudge from their last battle, despite using her strongest moves including the powerful Draco Meteor, her rage caused her moves to become weaker and Cyrus escaped, with neither her nor Cynthia strong enough to follow him.

Spiritomb
Cynthia's Spiritomb

Spiritomb was the second Pokémon seen in Cynthia's possession. With her powerful Psychic techniques she can lift objects with ease and played an important role in rescuing Rad Rickshaw from the clutches of Team Galactic. She was later used against Cyrus in the Galactic HQ and defeated his Honchkrow but was frozen by his Weavile and rendered unable to fight.

Spiritomb's known moves are Psychic and Shock Wave, and her Ability is Pressure.

Milotic
Cynthia's Milotic

Milotic was the third Pokémon seen in Cynthia's possession. Milotic was first used against the Galactic Boss Cyrus in the Team Galactic HQ, it defeated his Weavile after a tough battle but was knocked out by a Giga Impact from his Gyarados.

Milotic's known moves are Iron Tail, Brine, Twister, and Tackle.

Trivia

  • After the player heads into the Distortion World in Platinum, should the player use the portal to head back into Spear Pillar, Cynthia will still be there, while also being in the Distortion World.
  • In the Sinnoh-based games, Milotic is her only Pokémon used that was not introduced during that generation.
    • In Generation IV, it is also the only Pokémon used by her that is not a dual type.
  • In Platinum, Cynthia's Togekiss has the Hustle Ability, despite having no moves that benefit from the Ability.
  • Cynthia shares many similarities with Volo:
    • Mission 20, where the player must meet up with Volo, is called The Researcher of Myths, a title by which Cynthia also refers to herself.
    • In his final battle, Volo wears a necklace with a teardrop-shaped ornament that resembles the ornament on Cynthia's dress. However, Cogita's dress more fully resembles Cynthia's, including the teardrop-shaped ornament, so the significance of the ornament is uncertain.
    • In the final battle against him, Volo shares five Pokémon with Cynthia's Pokémon Platinum team: Spiritomb, Garchomp, Togekiss, Roserade, and Lucario. The only Pokémon that Volo does not use from said team is Milotic, as it is not present in Pokémon Legends: Arceus; he instead uses Hisuian Arcanine. Like Cynthia, Volo always begins the battle by sending out Spiritomb.
    • The music that plays before Volo's final battle begins is an arrangement of Cynthia's battle theme. His final battle theme is an arrangement of Cynthia's encounter and battle themes.
    • After his final battle, Volo vows to meet Arceus, and in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia meets Arceus during the Sinjoh Ruins event.
