Character profile
Hau is described as a big-hearted boy who quickly befriends the player once they move to the Alola region. He is the grandson of Hala, who is the Kahuna of Melemele Island; and his favorite food is malasada, a famous treat in Alola. One of the villagers in Iki Town, where they live, comments that as a boy, Hau had once witnessed Hala in a rage, which frightened him to the point of tears. Nothing Hala did could comfort him, which he claims is the reason why Hala is "too soft" on Hau.
Hau is a young, big-hearted boy that quickly becomes the player's friend as soon as they move to the Alola region. At the start of the story, the Pokémon loving boy is often laidback and enjoys Pokémon battles for fun, but over the course of his island challenge, he begins to feel more serious. Hau has a huge appeite, especially for Alola's famous local specialty, malasada, always looking for nearby malasada shops. Hau is typically excited about the Pokémon, people and locations he finds, stating that he took the island challenge the moment he had the chance to. He loves Pokémon battles and battles the player at almost any opportunity, but remembers to heal up the player's party before any begin. Hau often means well, but his sense of curiosity and excitement can irritate others and cause himself to struggle in certain actions and consequences. In Pokémon Masters EX, his character description claims that he's often optimistic and and his smile can be infectious. Hau has a sense of humor that others such as Lillie may not respond to very well. In response, this has lead to playful name calling, telling Lillie that she is a "stick in the sand."

Pokémon Sun and Moon
Over the course of the Alola-based games, despite knowing that its okay to have fun with Pokémon battles, Hau begins to take his strength and training more seriously. All of Hau's Pokémon battles with the player can be lost without consequences of losing with the story progressing in either direction, with exception of his final battle in either game, where the player must win to progress. Hau learns from the player and Gladion and trains with his grandfather, Hala, who provides Hau with a Z-Ring partway through the story. Hau takes great notice of his strength, wishing to get better to help others when necessary. He enjoys the company of his friends, the player and Lillie, who he travels with throughout the story.
Once the player has chosen a starter Pokémon, Hau will challenge the player using the starter Pokemon weak to the player's choice. Upon losing, he quickly shrugs off his defeat as he says that he is having fun. He also embarks on the island challenge at the same time as the player, and completes the challenges at around the same pace, until at the most Sophocles's trial. Hau's happy-go-lucky attitude affects most of his early battles as he didn't mind losing, something that irritates Gladion after their first battle.

Hau joins the player on a tour of Aether Paradise after finishing their Akala Island trials. He is shocked to hear from Lusamine that she is over forty years old, and also comments that she looks like Lillie without knowing of their connection.
Hau lives in Iki Town on Melemele Island. His currently known relatives include his grandfather, Hala, the kahuna of the island, who he lives with. He affectionately calls Hala "Tutu." One of the villagers in Iki Town, where they live, comments that as a boy, Hau had once witnessed Hala in a rage, which frightened him to the point of tears. Nothing Hala did could comfort him, which he claims is the reason why Hala is "too soft" on Hau. Both of Hau's parents are mentioned but go unnamed. Hau mentions that his father is not in Alola, and is likely on his own adventure, presumably in Kanto, with context saying that he will look for him and Lillie across the world after he asks the player about the region (to which Lillie left to, and the player is from).

When the Aether House is raided by Team Skull, Hau manages to win a battle against a Team Skull Grunt, but says that battles he can't afford to lose aren't any fun. Before the player returns from Po Town, Hau loses a critical battle against Team Skull Admin Plumeria when she and her grunts kidnaps Lillie, and is left depressed and in doubt of his own skills because of this.
Appearance
Hau is a young Alolan boy at around the age of 11. Hau has long dark green hair that he keeps tied up in a ponytail. His bangs are pulled back and two side bangs fall down to chin length. He wears two orange hair clips on the top of his head on opposite sides. This hair style gives him some resemblance to his grandfather, Hala, who wears his hair in a similar way. Hau has rounded eyes with no distinct eyelashes, his irises being completely black, leaving only a white glare in them.

Hau joins the player and Gladion in their attempt to rescue Lillie and her Cosmog from the Aether Foundation. He is constantly irritated by Gladion's orders and lack of explaining, but manages to take down several Aether Foundation Employee with him and the player before reaching Lillie. He is surprised when Lusamine reveals that Lillie and Gladion were her children. When Lusamine attempts to open up the Ultra Beasts wormholes, Gladion orders Hau to keep Guzma busy while he deals with the recently-arrived Nihilego, but Lusamine and Guzma manage to achieve their objective and escape.
Hau's outfit remains consistent throughout the whole game and between versions. He wears a large, slightly baggy black t-shirt with short sleeves that end at his elbows. His shirt's collar is white that goes all the way around his collar bone, this collar is slightly larger than it looks, and has an orange button on the front to make it smaller, leaving a smaller open loop. Hau wears large orange swimtrunks, ending at his knees. The shorts have a floral decoration to them, leaving darker red-orange leaves and white flowers, this pattern is reminiscent of the Pokémon, Florges. Hau wears a pair of orange sandals, the same color as the darker orange flowers. The shoes are mainly open, but cover the toes, has a singular strap and wrap around his ankles. He has a round orange multi-layered backpack that is the same colors as his pants, a light orange handle connects to the top of it. Two white zippers connect to the largest opening, and a single white zipper connects to a smaller opening. The middle has a darker orange divider going through the middle. Darker orange stracks go around his shoulders like a schoolbag and connect to the bottom.

When the player is about to travel to Poni Island, Hau expresses his intention to hold back the island challenge and train himself with Hala instead, finding himself not sufficiently strong enough yet. When the player is about to enter the Pokémon League building, Hau catches up to them and challenges the player to another battle. Upon losing, Hau reaffirms his determination to get stronger, and spurs the player on for his Pokémon League challenge. The day after the player becomes the Champion, Lillie departs for Kanto without having been able to say it to the player and Hau, who is devastated by this and is left in tears after Lillie's ship has left.
Hau's only difference in design between versions is that he wears a white Z-Ring created by Hala on his left wrist in Sun and Moon, while in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he wears a black Z-Power Ring instead.

During the post-game, Hau appears at the player's house to give them the Z-Crystals to the starter Pokémon they didn't choose at the start of the game, saying that he got them as rewards after having finally had a serious battle with his grandfather. After asking the player and their mom about Kanto, he decides to train hard to one day travel there to find both Lillie and his father, who is a strong Trainer who had hated being the son of a kahuna and thus had moved out of Alola. Afterwards, Hau can be found at Iki Town, training a pair of reformed Team Skull Grunts in Alolan sumo.
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon Special Demo Version
In the Special Demo, Hau appears as part of the story. After the player, Sun, arrives in Hau'oli City, he introduces himself. In the Tourist Bureau, Sun's mother suggests that they take a look around the city's shopping district. Sun and Hau then get into a fight with Team Skull. After which, Hau directs the player to a Pokémon Center where he provides the player with a Super Potion.

Hau is one of the possible NPCs who can challenge the player for the title of Champion, implying that he has completed all his island trials. He will always be the first challenger to appear after the player has defeated the Elite Four for the second time.
On Sunday nights, Hau will appear near the Malasada Shop.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Pokémon Sun and Moon
After the player has obtained their starter Pokémon from Professor Kukui on 1, Hau will appear and choose his own starter from the remaining two (which is always the one weak to the player's choice) before challenging the player into their first Trainer battle. When his grandfather shows up late in Iki Town, Hau berates him for his lateness. After the player has defeated Hala, instead of boarding Kukui's boat, Hau will invite the player to ride Mantine to Akala Island.

Background and pre-game
Website blurb: "Hau is a Pokémon-loving young boy with a big appetite! He's the same age as your character. When you move to the Alola region, he makes friends with you right away. He has a real weakness for malasada, a famous treat in the Alola region, and he is always in search of malasada shops. He is a big-hearted boy who really loves Pokémon."

On Ula'ula Island, Hau will give the player a Lycanium Z after battling them after their arrival on the island. After the player defeats Guzma at Malie Garden, he notices Hau and tells him that they shouldn't take the island challenge just because he's a kahuna's grandson. After the Aether Paradise incident, Hau realizes that he keeps failing to protect those he cares about, and becomes even more determined to become stronger.
On Melemele Island
Hau first meets the player after they have chosen their first partner Pokémon, revealing that he already has one. Hau will challenge the player using the first partner Pokémon weak to that of the player's choice. Upon losing, he quickly shrugs off his defeat as he says that he is having fun. Hau's happy-go-lucky attitude affects most of his early battles as he didn't mind losing and just wants to enjoy his adventure. He embarks on the island challenge at the same time as the player, and completes the challenges at around the same pace. He travels along with the player, Professor Kukui and Lillie through Melemele Island. After the player goes through the Trainers' School, Hau brings the player and Lillie to Hau'oli City, where he helps the player upgrade their Rotom Pokédex with the Poké Finder at the Alola Tourist Bureau. After this, the group of three meet back up and take group picture using Rotom Dex's new feature. While Hau does most of his trials at around the same time as the player, he tends to relax first, preferring to explore cities such as local shops first, often doing his trials and tasks after the player. In Sun and Moon, Hau rides on the boat with the player, Lillie and Professor Kukui to Heahea City on Akala Island, showing exciting of reaching a new location and wanting to hurry. In contrast to Lillie, he tends to take things less serious.

When Necrozma fuses with Nebby during the game's climax and Ultra Beasts start appearing around Alola, Hau and Hala are seen coming face to face with a Blacephalon/Stakataka at Mahalo Trail. Hala chooses to entrust the battle to his grandson, who is soon joined in the battle by Tapu Koko. After the Necrozma crisis is over and the player starts taking on Mina's trial, the player encounters Hau at Hau'oli Cemetery, also taking on Mina's trial. He then tells the player that they should have a serious battle once they're both done with their island challenge. Later during Mina's trial, he also shows up outside the Aether House, encountering the player and Guzma there. He encourages Guzma to become something no one's ever been before, before giving the player one last warning of their upcoming serious battle. After the player has cleared Mina's trial, Hala will show up and reveal that he and Hau had finally had an all-out battle, in which Hau had managed to defeat his grandfather.
On Akala Island
Hau occasionally meets up with the player throughout Akala Island, doing the same trials as them. He frequently asks the player to battle with them, such as in Paniola Town, where he tells them how he wishes to be strong like his grandfather, who has provided him with a Z-Ring or Z-Power Ring of his own. The two travel to 5 and have another encounter with Team Skull, this time with another member by the name of Gladion. Gladion defeats Hau in battle, telling Hau that his Pokémon aren't weak, but Hau doesn't tend to take things too seriously, irritating Gladion. Hau meets up with the player again at the Battle Royal Dome, along with Gladion who once again, have conflicting thoughts on Pokémon battles. Hau makes it back to Heahea City catching up with the main group at Professor Burnet's Dimensional Research Lab and walks with the player through Diglett's Tunnel to meet up with Olivia for his grand trial. Sometime along the way Faba from the Aether Foundation invites Hau to go with the player to Aether Paradise. Hau invites Lillie with them, who rejects and chooses to watch Hau's grand trial with Olivia instead. At Akala Island's sea port, he seems impressed the man-made island of Aether Paradise and is excited to talk about it with the player.

After the player has defeated the Elite Four, instead of Professor Kukui challenging them to test the player's worthiness, Hau will appear to face the player as their final challenger at the Pokémon League to determine the Alola region's first Champion. He also once again appears in the Title Defense battles, now being the strongest possible challenger.
Tour of Aether Paradise
On the tour through Aether Paradise, Hau meets Wicke, who recognizes that he is a trial-goer at the age of 11. Meeting up with Lusamine, at the conservation area, he converses with her and the player about how cruel nature can truly and it's the job of the Aether Foundation to protect Pokémon without harming the natural course. Hau is shocked to hear from Lusamine that she is over forty years old. Lusamine makes the quick comment that the right outfit can make someone look much better. Hau makes an off-handed statement that nobody could probably pull off the president's looks, except for Lillie, invoking a non-verbal response in Lusamine. An Ultra Wormhole appears in front of the group and out comes an Ultra Beast, Hau tells the player to fight and distract Nihilego as he protects Lusamine from harm. Afterwards, Lusamine tells Wicke to bring them back on their island challenge and boat them to Ula'ula Island.

On Ula'ula Island
On the island of Ula'ula, Hau meets up with Kukui and the player at Malie Garden, who tells them that their next trial is on top of Mount Hokulani at the Hokulani Observatory. Hau does not seem to recognize what an observatory is, but is excited to find out. He splits paths with the player, preferring to find other things to do before challenging the trial. He does his trial off-screen, meeting up with the player again at 13, where they butt heads once again with Gladion. Gladion tells them both that if they know about a Pokémon by the name of Cosmog, they should keep it safe at all costs, as it could bring disaster to the Alola region. Hau starts to worry if Lillie is going to be okay. Hau and Lillie stay at the Aether House for the time being while the player does their trial and saves a Yungoos at Po Town. While the player is gone, Aether House is raided by Team Skull, Hau manages to win a battle against a Team Skull Grunt, but says that battles he can't afford to lose aren't any fun. Before the player returns, Hau loses a critical battle against Team Skull's Admin Plumeria when she and her grunts kidnaps Lillie, and is left depressed and in doubt of his own skills because of this. He feels weak for being unable to save Lillie, who in turn, willingly went with Team Skull to protect Hau, Nebby, and any children involved. Gladion overhears this conversation, and berates both Hau and the player for being unable to protect Nebby and Lillie, telling them to go to Aether Paradise with him.

Rescue at Aether Paradise
Hau joins the player and Gladion in their attempt to rescue Lillie and Nebby from the Aether Foundation. Although he starts to doubt about himself and at first hesitates to accompany them because he would probably feel like a burden. During the infiltration in Aether Paradise, he is constantly irritated by Gladion's orders and lack of explaining, both constantly end up arguing. He goes with the player to Secret Lab B to learn more about Cosmog. Hau manages to take down several Aether Foundation Employees with Gladion and the player before reaching Lillie, glad to hear that she is unharmed. He ends up surprised when Lusamine reveals that Lillie and Gladion were her children. Lusamine attempts to open up Ultra Wormholes across Alola using the captured Nebby. At this time, Gladion orders Hau to keep Guzma busy while he deals with the recently arrived Nihilego, but Lusamine and Guzma manage to achieve their objective and escape.

The group takes rest at Aether Paradise for the night, under the protection of Wicke. The following morning, Lillie takes on a new appearance, to which Hau compliments her new look. In parallel to Lillie, who wishes to change herself, Hau expresses his intention to hold back the island challenge and train himself with Hala instead. After everything that happened, Hau has realized how weak he is, especially when compared to the player or Gladion. So he must get his act together if he wants to achieve his goals. Hau stops his journey and island challenge and sets out to train with Hala.

Ending
When the player is about to enter the Pokémon League building, Hau catches up to them and challenges the player to another battle to decide who will face the league first. This time, Hau takes the fight more seriously and asks the player to use all their strength. Upon losing, Hau reveals that this time he really wanted to beat the player and reaffirms his determination to get even stronger. He finally takes battles more seriously. Hau says goodbye to the player and spurs them on for his Pokémon League challenge. The day after the player becomes the Champion, Hau decides to spend time with the player and everyone else at the festival. The following day, Hau runs into the player's house, telling them about a disaster and that the two of them need to go to the Hau'oli's Marina immediately. As it turns out, Lillie is leaving for Kanto without having been able to say it to either the player or Hau, who is devastated by this. Hau tells her that he will write the biggest of letters for when she leaves, and in response, Lillie offers Hau an unknown present. Hau, the player and Kukui say goodbye to Lillie as she takes off on the back of the ferry, leaving Hau in tears. The group of three sit down, and Hau talks about his emotions, Kukui saying that it is okay, and it's best to give people one last smile as they leave. Professor Kukui takes the two kids home back to their parents.

In the credits sequence, Hau can be seen in two different photographs. The first of his photographs shown, and the first one to appear as a whole, has Hau using Tauros Charge, having a race with his grandfather and Tapu Koko. The second photograph has him pictured alongside the player and Lillie in Hau'oli City, being the one that the three of them took at the start of their journey. The last of the images are shown after the credits. The photograph is shown as part of an opened package sent to Lillie with other photographs and a letter with imagery drawn on it. The words "The End" slowly appears on screen.

In the post-game
At the start of the post-game, Hau appears at the player's house to give them the Z-Crystals to the first partner Pokémon they didn't choose at the start of the game, saying that he got them as rewards after having finally had a serious battle with his grandfather. After asking the player and their mom about Kanto, he decides to train hard to one day travel there to find both Lillie and his father, who is a strong Trainer who had hated being the son of a kahuna and thus had moved out of Alola. Hau also warns that he will try to beat the player and snatch them their Champion title, now that he is strong enough. Afterwards, Hau can be found at Iki Town, training a pair of reformed Team Skull Grunts in Alolan sumo.

Hau is one of the possible NPCs who can challenge the player for the title of Champion, implying that he has completed all his island trials. He will always be the first challenger to appear after the player has defeated the Elite Four for the second time. There, Hau has achieved everything he wanted, but he warns that he still has an opponent to defeat, the player.

Hau's team slightly differs based on the player's Starter Pokémon choice. He chooses the Alolan starter that is weak to the player's starter. Hau's Eevee evolves into the Eeveelution of the type the player's starter is weak to.
Hau's team slightly differs based on the player's first partner Pokémon choice. He chooses the first partner Pokémon that is weak to the player's first partner Pokémon, while his Eevee evolves into the Eeveelution with a type advantage over the player's chosen first partner Pokémon. As seen throughout Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he tends to release his Alola first partner from its Poké Ball, and mentions it by name frequently as the story progresses.

While Hau has an Alola first partner Pokémon that evolves over time and is seen in every battle, he also has a Pichu that also evolves over time. This Pichu eventually evolves into an Alolan Raichu. Raichu is seen in numerous other pieces of media and cross-canon counterparts, including the Trading Card Game, the anime, and Pokémon Masters EX, being seen as his main partner. In his second battle and onward, Pichu, Pikachu or Raichu can be seen participating in all battles involving Hau.

Hau owns a Tauros in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which has also made appearances outside the core series, such as Pokémon Masters EX. In Sun and Moon's end credits, a Tauros can be seen ridden on by Hau in a photograph. In this image, Hau is wearing Ride Gear and Tauros is wearing gear itself that resembles the same one used by the player for Poké Ride, implying that this Tauros was summoned through the Ride Pager.

The player will not black out in battles against Hau and the story will progress regardless of the outcome, except for battles taking place at Mount Lanakila or the Pokémon League.

Hau debuted in No Stone Unturned!, where he and his father had just returned to Alola after a long time away. He was training with Dartrix, only for its attacks to accidentally hit Ash, Rotom, and Pikachu. Hau became excited upon seeing Ash's Z-Ring and asked if he had taken part in Hala's grand trial. Hau then had a battle against Ash, using Dartrix against Rowlet. Hau ended up winning when Ash dropped his Grassium Z. Ash suggested they have another battle, but Hau was about to have a meeting with his father, so he declined but promised to meet up the next day for a rematch. The next day, they conducted their rematch after Rowlet learned how to use Seed Bomb, but it was still not enough to defeat it. In a last-ditch effect, Ash and Rowlet performed the Z-Move Bloom Doom, which was able to defeat Dartrix.

In League Offenders and Defenders!, Hau caught up with Ash and met ashcl for the Manalo Conference. He later assisted in the battle against Team Skull, defeating Rapp and her Zubat.

;Hau'oli City Shopping District
In Battle Royal 151!, Hau competed in the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference with his Alolan Raichu and was able to progress to the Top 16. The match-ups revealed that he would be battling Samson Oak. In Battling Besties!, Hau went up against Samson in the first round of the Manalo Conference. He used his Raichu against Samson's Alolan Exeggutor and eventually won, advancing to the second round.
* After visiting the Pokémon Center
:"Hi, Professor Kukui! This is Sun! He moved here from the Kanto region—all the way across the ocean!"
:"Professor Kukui is researching Pokémon moves."
:"Hey, Professor, you should train Sun!"
:"We just ran into those Team Skull thugs, and it got pretty rough!"
:"I know you and Greninja can do it, Sun! Good luck, Sun! I'll show you around some more when you're done!"

* If talked to before going to Ten Carat Hill
In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Hau approached Ash with his Decidueye upon learning that they would be battling each other in the next round of the Manalo Conference. In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Hau went to search for Ash, who was late for their battle due to his training with Rowlet. After finding him and making it to the battlefield with him, Hau and Ash began their battle. During the battle, Decidueye was able to dodge Rowlet's Bloom Doom, before using its own Z-Move, Sinister Arrow Raid, which was barely avoided by Rowlet. The battle concluded in Battling on the Wing! after Decidueye was defeated by Rowlet's Brave Bird, thus eliminating Hau from the tournament. Though he congratulated Ash for his victory, Hau was left dismayed by his loss, but he was comforted by Hala, who complimented him for the battle.
:"Good luck, Sun! I'll show you around some more when you're done!"

;Ten Carat Hill Farthest Hollow
From The Final Four! to The Wisdom Not to Run!, Hau watched the battles between Kiawe and Gladion, and Ash and Guzma. He then reappeared in a flashback in Final Rivals!.
:"Sun! Whoa, you got a Z-Ring! I guess you cleared the trial, eh? Congratulations! I've got a trial for you, too! Look over there!"
:"I forgot that I gave you my Super Potion, and I had to run away all the way out here!"

* After defeating Plumeria
In Enter the Champion!, Hau attended the award ceremony for the Manalo Conference victor, only for it to be interrupted when a Ultra Beasts (anime) arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole. In the following episode, Hau helped evacuate innocent civilians to safety, only for another, Shiny Ultra Beasts (anime) to emerge from another wormhole at the shopping area. By combining their Z-Moves, Hau, Gladion, Kiawe, Lana, Lillie, Sophocles, and Mallow managed to successfully knock the Shiny Guzzlord back into Ultra Space.
:"You're awesome, Sun!"
:"I wanna be an awesome Trainer, too!"
:"Hey, Sun, now that you're finished with the trial, I'll show you the way to the malasada shop!"
:"Woo-hoo! Let's bring Sun's mom, too!"
:"All right, I'm about to eat every malasada in the shop!"

Pokémon Sun and Moon
From Exhibition Unmasked! to From Z to Shining Z!, Hau watched the exhibition game between Ash and Professor Kukui alongside Decidueye.
;Iki Town
:"Hey! You and me! Let's have a Pokémon battle!"
:"Fair enough. Then I'm Hau. And my partner's <Hau's starter Pokémon>!"
:"Your <starter Pokémon> looks really cool, too!
::Regardless of choice: "Yeah! So let's battle! I couldn't wait for you to find your way to Iki Town, so I've been all over looking for you!"

* If the player walks away
In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Hau was briefly seen battling Nanu in the Ula'ula Island grand trial, though the outcome of the battle wasn't shown.
:"Hold on! You gotta battle with me!"

* If talked to again
Pokémon Journeys: The Series
:"You will battle me, right? I know you will! Right?"
In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Hau and Decidueye watched the Battle Royal match between Ash, Kukui, Gladion, and Kiawe.

::Not now!:
:"Very well, then! Let the Pokémon battle begin!"

Character
:"Hoooo-wah!"
Hau is an energetic young Trainer keen to take on the Island challenge. His inexperience showed during his debut appearance in No Stone Unturned!, where he was confident though lacked direction in his battle style. Hau's focus and ability to foresee his opponent's strategy had improved by the eve of the Manalo Conference, which enabled him to advance to the Top 8 before he was defeated by Ash in their match in Battling on the Wing!. He is still learning to cope with defeat, though quickly calms himself down. He also values the experience of others as inspiration, especially Ash and his grandfather Hala.

:"Fearsome Pokémon...?"
Hau debuted in The Decision and the Tournament of Six. He first appeared as a participant at an Iki Town festival tournament.
:"I'm off to check out Diglett's Tunnel next! It's a whole cave made by Pokémon, right?"

* Outside Dimensional Research Lab
In The Announcement and the Prize, Hau faced Gladion in the first round. During their battle, Gladion asked why Hau joined the tournament and assumed he wanted to surpass his grandfather Hala. When Hau replied that he thought it would be fun, Gladion called him weak and won the battle.
:"Hey, <player>! So you've made it through all three captains' trials, yeah? Then you should go meet Kahuna Olivia! She lives in the town past Diglett's Tunnel."
:"Diglett's Tunnel is...let's see... From here, it's kinda near the PMC! It's easy to walk right past it, though, so keep your eyes peeled!"
:"Now it's malasada time for me!"

;Diglett's Tunnel
In A Photoshoot and the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart, Hau met Ilima at the Melemele Island Trainers' School and requested to join him and the other Trial Captains in confronting Team Skull at their hideout in Po Town. Hau wanted to meet Guzma, who was a student of Hala's, but ended up believing that only victories mattered in battles. After Ilima accepted, Hau went off to buy malasadas, as he believed that with food, everyone might get along easier. Later that day, Hau and Ilima met with Lana, Kiawe, Mallow, and Acerola at Po Town. Their presence alerted Guzma, who demanded to know why his base was being invaded. When Hau and the Captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord; and had them attack Hau and the Captains. Despite their best efforts, Hau and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging Ultra Beasts.
:"<Player>!"
:"Aue! I was wondering who you were playing around with without me, and it's Team Skull!"
:"See you on the flip side!"

* After defeating the Team Skull Grunts
In Confusion and Monsters from Another World, Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion. Annoyed Hau and the Captains were still fighting, Guzma revealed a Cosmog and had it open more Ultra Wormholes. Gladion appeared, demanding to know where Guzma got the Cosmog and Ultra Beasts from. Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Gladion. To everyone's shock, Gladion also revealed the Aether Foundation's president, Lusamine, was the one who gave Guzma Cosmog as part of her plan to create a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Eventually, the Ultra Beasts broke out of Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc across Ula'ula Island.
:"Man, <player>, when I fight with you... It's like even my Pokémon feel more at ease! You really are some kind of Trainer. That's it! I've just gotta give you something!"
:"Max Ethers will restore all the PP to one of your moves, you know? Pretty great, right?"
:"Now I'm gonna go have some more fun with those Diglett! See ya!"

;Akala Outskirts
Six months later in Shock!! Father in the Pendant!, Hau traveled to Exeggutor Island, where the Trial Captains and island kahunas had been training in preparation to face the Ultra Beasts. Despite Hala initially refusing to let him join the others in training, Hau requested to participate in the battle to protect Alola, revealing that he had been training by himself while traveling around Alola and unknowingly obtained a Sparkling Stone, which was made into a Z-Ring by Olivia. Seeing the Z-Ring and Hau's determination, Hala agreed to train his grandson.
:"Aue! You're Kahuna Olivia! I'm Hau from Iki Town! You've gotta let me battle you!"
:"Oh, hey, <player>! Guess what? This weird green guy from Aether told me to come to Hano Grand Resort once I finished up with my grand trial here on Akala. Crazy, right?"
:"I may not be as strong as my gramps, Hala... But I can still raise up <rival's starter's first evolution Pokémon> and the rest of my team to do their best!"

;Hano Grand Resort
Hau was taken to Resolution Cave, where he sparred with Hala until his Brionne evolved into a Primarina. After finishing their training, Hala decided they should join the others on Mount Lanakila, only to be interrupted by a battle between Tapu Fini and a Buzzwole. After learning the others were also battling the Ultra Beasts, Hau and Hala teamed up to assist Tapu Fini.
:"Wait! Take me, too!"
:"Thanks! Are you coming, too, Professor?"
:"Yup! It's good-bye, Akala Island! Though I guess we can come back anytime we want to, huh?"

* After checking the computer
:"Wait... So Cosmog might be an Ultra Beast?"

:"We learned a bit about Cosmog! Like, it might be an Ultra Beast or whatever... and if you stress it a lot, it can create Ultra Wormholes! Maybe to run away or something?"

:"Gladion never really explains anything, eh? Probably thinks it makes him look cool..."

:"The president? That's Miss Lusamine, right? She's a really nice person, so I'm sure she'll listen to us if we explain everything."

:"That's not enough. I've gotta be able to save Pokémon on my own! If I can't do that, I'll never be an island kahuna. I'll never be able to make people really smile!"
:"And I still haven't even done Acerola's trial or anything. I've got a lot of catching up to do."
:"Yeah... But we got to see things that almost no one would ever get the chance to see! Maybe if I set out to train harder, I'll get to see more amazing things like that again!"

:"<Player>! Hold up for me!"
:"So after we split up at Aether Paradise, I went and cleared all the rest of my trials, and then I even went back home to train with Ilima a bit. I was just thinking it was time to take on the Pokémon League... Then I heard from Gladion that you were already heading here, <player>! So I booked it here as fast as I could!"
:"That was, like, the fastest I've ever moved in my life, you know!"
:"But that's not what I came here to tell you!"
:"<Player>! We're gonna decide which one of us'll be the first to the Pokémon League! You're gonna need to use your full force if you think you're gonna beat me and my team when we're serious about winning!"

* After being defeated
:"Ooooh, and I really wanted my Pokémon to know how it feels to beat your team this time! But being seriously frustrated will only make me stronger!"
:"So you'd better go and become Champion. 'Cause I'm gonna train so that next time I can come beat Champion <player>! Good luck, cuz, and here!"

:"I bet you and <first Pokémon in party> got a great shot together at the photo club, right? Now it's time for our next stop! Akala Island, here we come!"
::Regardless of choice: "Man, once I get started with all the poses and the stickers and things, I can't stop myself! I'll spend ages making sure <Hau's starter Pokémon's first evolution stage> is looking awesome, so I should hold off on taking any photos of my own for now. Wouldn't want to leave you bored and hanging!"
:"Just think... I wonder what kind of trials we'll face next!"
:"Oh. Yeah. So, about that, Professor... I was thinking that I'd really like to head to Akala Island with Mantine! And I want to see <player> take a shot at Poké Ride, too!"
::Mantine?: "Shoots, yeah! The Mantine from Big Wave Beach on Route 2. You saw them, right?"
::But the boat?: "Aw, come on! I really want to ride on a Mantine! Don't you? And I'm totally not just saying that because the professor's boat is such a junk heap, either."
:"Yeah! So I'll see you on Akala Island, Professor! <Player>! If you wanna go together, I'll be at Route 2's Big Wave Beach!"

;Big Wave Beach
:"That's right, we are! We're doing our island challenges together!"
:"And next up, we want to go to Akala Island!"
:"Great! So, like... How do we actually do Mantine Surfing?"

* If talked to again
:"Do you think Mantine have Rough Skin like Sharpedo? Or are they all slippery and slidey?"

;Heahea Beach
:"Land ahoy! Or land ashore? Whatever you say! All right! We made it to Akala Island!"
:"Mantine is the best!"
:"So, do you think the professor and Lillie are already here, too? Let's split up and see if we can find them in town anywhere, <player>!"

* If talked to again
:"Whoa! Look! There's, like, a whole mess of Pyukumuku! Awww, they look like they're sleeping so nice and peaceful that I don't want to wake them up."

;Heahea City
:"Wait, so Mantine's even faster than that old boat of yours, Professor?"
:"Shoots, I know where I'm going first, and that is straight to the Pokémon Center!"
:"I wonder what kind of malasada they make on Akala, eh?"

;Paniola Town
:"Hey! <Player>! Glad I ran into you... So we can see who's stronger now! I got a Z-Power Ring from my gramps, too, after making it through his grand trial!"
:"Having a battle in a place like Paniola Town feels like we're in a real old-fashioned Western showdown or something, right? This is so cool! Though if we're real honorable cowboys, we've gotta make sure our teams are healthy first."

* Before battle
:"Awrite, team! <Hau's starter Pokémon's first evolution stage> and Pikachu and everybody, you oughta all be bursting with energy after eating a pile of my mom's special pancakes, so let's show this newbie what Alola's got!"

* Upon being defeated
:"Nice! How'd you come up with that kind of battle plan? You gotta tell me!"

* After being defeated
:"Ma-a-an, that was some kinda battle! <Hau's starter Pokémon's first evolution stage> and everybody all look like they had a blast, too!"
:"Right then. Here. I'll share my bit of good luck with you, <player>."
:"You know how the Totem Pokémon are all, like, surrounded by some aura of power? If you use a Dire Hit on your Pokémon and manage to land a critical hit, that aura won't mean a thing! You might wanna try using some of those Rotom Powers when you're fighting a totem, too! You know, Pokémon battles are just, like, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But you're only really a loser if you don't have any fun while you're at it. Right? Anyway, I'm heading off to Paniola Ranch!"

;5
:"Ha ha ha! Man, I lost again!"
:"I am! So seriously! I'm seriously enjoying it!"
:"Whoa! Hey, <player>!"
:"This guy is plenny scary!"
:"You know my gramps? Wait. So you think I'm strong?"
:"Thanks, <player>. And <first Pokémon in party>, too. You both gave it your all!"
:"Phew... Looks like I've gotta train up my team if I'm gonna take on the trial at Brooklet Hill next! Here, <player>, take these with you. We're gonna beat this island challenge!"

;Battle Royal Dome
* Before participating in the Battle Royal
:"Dude! It's the Masked Royal! I wanna battle! I wanna battle!"
:"What?! Gladion, too?!"

* After participating in the Battle Royal
:"But, Mr. Masked Royal... How'd you even know that we're doing our trials right now? Oh! I get it! Because of our amulets, huh?"
:"Well, I'm having a blast!"
:"But why are you here? Why would you even wanna do a Battle Royal? You still trying to get stronger or something? Or maybe you just want to make some friends? Heh heh!"
:"...Wow. You're just a ray of sunshine, eh? I think you'd have a lot more fun if you just let yourself have a good time with everybody else. You can do a lot more together, too!"
:"Well, I don't know what his deal is, but I thought that battle was just plain fun! That's why I'm gonna keep doing Battle Royals. And my Pokémon seem to like them, too!"

;8
:"Hey, hey! <Player>! You ever heard of that Festival Plaza thing? I guess it's like a festival or something where lots of people get together and have fun?"

* If the player have not visited the Festival Plaza before
:"No worries! I'll teach you how to visit it. I just heard about it for the first time, too... Let's see, I think she said... Yeah, you're supposed to open up your X menu, then tap on Festival Plaza!"
:"What'd you think, <player>? Pretty fun, right? It's great to get to meet so many different folks! Now I'm gonna go have some fun with my team!"

* If the player had visited the Festival Plaza before
:"Festival Plaza seems pretty good, huh? Even my old gramps tried it out. It's great to get to meet so many different folks! Now I'm gonna go have some fun with my team!"

;Paniola Ranch
:"Hey, <player>! Howzit! I knew I heard your footsteps!"
:"I finished up Mallow's trial and ate down every last bite of that Super Mallow Special of hers! Boy, that was good enough to break the mouth!"
:"You heading to the Dimensional Research Lab? You just keep on going straightaways this way. Maybe I'll catch you there later!"

;Heahea City
* Dimensional Research Lab
:"You really think so?!"
:"Fearsome Pokémon...?"
:"Being able to go to more places really makes it feel like you're growing along with your partner Pokémon, huh? It's pretty great!"

* Outside Dimensional Research Lab

:"<Player>"
:"Aue! I was wondering who you were playing around with without me, and it's Team Skull!"
:"See you on the flip side!"
:"Man, <player>, when I fight with you... It's like even my Pokémon feel more at ease! You really are some kind of Trainer. That's it! I've just gotta give you something!"
:"Max Ethers will restore all the PP to one of your moves, you know? Pretty great, right? It's pretty much like those Roto PP Restores you can get from the Roto Loto, yeah!"
:"Now I'm gonna go have some more fun with those Diglett! See ya!"

;Akala Outskirts
:"Maybe I can't show off all <Hau's starter Pokémon's first evolution stage>'s and the rest of my team's strengths like my gramps... But I'm still gonna do the best that I can do!"

;Hano Grand Resort
:"Wait! Take me, too!"
:"Thanks! Are you coming, too, Professor?"
:"Yup! It's good-bye, Akala Island! Though I guess we can come back anytime we want to, huh?"
:"Can you believe a big hunk of iron like Aether Paradise can float in the sea?! And it's all cuz of the Pokémon holding it up. Did you know that, <player>?"
::I knew that: "Awww... I thought I finally had one up on you."
::Really?!: "Knew I could count on you to react!"
:"Ho, I can't wait to actually see inside Aether Paradise for myself!"

;Aether Paradise
;B1F
:"Wait? You know who we are? How'd you know that?!"

;1F
:"Yeah, I took the first chance I had to join in the island challenge once I turned 11! 'Cause someday I really want to be able to beat my gramps...but he's way too strong! So for now I'll just enjoy my island challenge!"

;Conservation Area
:"Wow!"
:"Yeah. My gramps is always saying that nature's got its cruel side, sure as it gives us blessings."
:"But can the Aether Foundation really protect all the Pokémon that're out there?"
:"That's pretty amazing! The Aether Foundation seems awesome. But why'd you bother setting up a branch in a place like Alola?!"
:"Wow, there are even Pokémon that got done in by Team Skull, huh?"
:"Wow, Miss Lusamine! I don't know how you do all this! You're, like, not even that much older than us!"
:"You are?"
:"Wait, WHAT?!"
:"L-like what you wear? I don't think anyone else could pull off that kind of look! Except maybe Lillie..."
:"Miss Lusamine, stand back! That thing's...not right!"
:"<Player>. Can you distract that thing? I've gotta get Miss Lusamine outta here..."
:"Miss Lusamine! Are you OK?!"
:"Who the—?! Seriously, what's with that getup?!"

;B1F
:"I never thought I'd actually get to see the Ultra Wormhole in my life... Never mind meeting people from another world! Man, the surprises just never stop coming! We've gotta tell Professor Burnet about this the next time we see her."
:"Yes! Big Malasadas! Awesome! Isn't it crazy how malasadas taste even better when you eat 'em together with someone else?"
:"We will! Thanks, Ms. Wicke!"

;On the boat
:"Ho... My heart's still kinda racing, you know? The Ultra Wormhole is real... And Ultra Beasts are real, too! And now this Ultra Recon Squad, too! The world is just way too big... I bet we'll discover even more new things on the next island, too! We're gonna need all the energy we can get. Time to dig in!"
:"You want a malasada?"
:"Ahhh! So gooooooood! Shoot, I already ate the whole thing!"

;Malie City
:"Land ahoy! All right! Terra firma under foot again!"
:"Ula'ula Island is, like, another totally different place than Melemele or Akala, huh!"
:"We're supposed to meet up with the professor, right? Where was it? Malie Garden?"
:"Why'd he want us to go to a garden? Guess we'll find out when we get there, right?"

* Before battle
:"I had a great idea, <player>! Come on, let's have a battle!"
::Sure: "All right! Then let's go full powered on this one!"
::No way: "Aww! Are you just trying to bring me down or what?"

* Upon being defeated
:"Bwah!! I had my breath held that whole battle!"

* After being defeated
:"You know what, <player>? You should take this Lycanium Z, too! It came as a set with those Big Malasadas that Ms. Wicke gave me, but I don't plan on adding any Lycanroc to my team or anything."
:"You and your Pokémon looked like you were having a blast, <player>! I guess it's like my gramps said... Go beyond winning and losing, and learn to find joy in any battle...then you'll find that you're getting strong before you even know it!"
:"What? You mad that I still don't seem to be getting all that much stronger? I sure hope not! Me and my partner oughta be, like, totally in sync with one another!"
:"We'll get there, buddy. Now I guess we should go try to track down Professor Kukui in Malie Garden, right?"

;Malie Garden
:"I heard that they serve tea somewhere here in Malie Garden... I'll start my search from the bridge here. Why don't you start around the edge of the garden?"
:"Ho! Professor Kukui!"
:"Professor! Professor! You gotta hear this! An Ultra Wormhole opened up, like, right in  front of us, and there really are Ultra Beasts in there! And aliens from other worlds, too! You've gotta tell Professor Burnet, too!"
:"You guys can go ahead without me, Professor. I've got a hot date with a malasada shop! I'm gonna get my Pokémon some treats so they'll really start to like me!"
:"Hey, <player>, did you know?"
::Of course: "I haven't even finished the question yet."

:"There's an observatory up on Mount Hokulani! And you do know what it is they do at an observatory, right? Hope you do, 'cause I sure as heck don't."
:"Now I'm out!"

;Malie Garden
* After defeating Guzma
:"And you're Guzma...? So?"
:"Uh, yeah, I did! That was an awesome battle, <player>!"

* If talked to again
:"You remember what my gramps told us? He said we'd meet Pokémon and people on our journey that'd enrich our lives, yeah? I mean...I'm having a good time on my journey, for sure, but...maybe that's not enough?"

;13
:"<Player>!"
:"Phew, that Togedemaru was strong! But I managed to get through the trial, too. Maybe even managed to get a bit stronger, eh?"
:"I heard from Sophocles how you just breezed through that trial yourself, <player>. You're something else! I know! You should take this!"
:"Gah! He's back!"
:"What?! N-not that we'd tell you!"
:"A disaster? Like...a real disaster? Then what're we supposed to do about it?"
:"What do you mean? No matter what? You just gonna leave us hanging?!"
:"<Player>... If they're really looking for Cosmog, then... Is Lillie gonna be OK?"
:"I don't really get what's going on, but we've just got to keep both of them safe, right?! Then I know what I'm gonna do. Take on the next trials to train with my partner!"
:"Look, I know Guzma was saying all those things, but I really wanna complete my island challenge and help people learn about Pokémon battling! And, I dunno, I've gotta make sure I really get what my partner's feeling, too!"

;Tapu Village
:"Phew... Look, <player>! Seems like we're almost to the Aether House, where the captain is supposed to be, huh?"
:"So that way lies Mount Lanakila, huh? I guess they're really making a Pokémon League up there on the peak..."
:"The professor told me that Pokémon Leagues in other regions have four crazy-strong Trainers in them that they call the Elite Four!"
:"The Elite Four and our island kahunas... I wonder which ones are stronger! I'm pretty sure my gramps is the strongest, but I can't wait to find out for sure!"
:"Hey! Alola!"
:"I don't really get what all that was about... But it seems like those Ultra Recon Squad people are in a pretty hopeless spot, huh?"
:"I just wish everybody could be happy and find something to smile about. Even that Necrozma. Right, <player>?"

;Aether House
* Before Acerola's trial
:"Wait up, <player>! So, this is the Aether House, eh?"
:"What? Why?!"
:"Phew... So I won, yeah? Then why's this little fellow still gnawing on me?"
:"Oh yeah, we met all right... In battle anyway. But... Hey, where's Lillie?"
:"These ankle biters are starting to grow on me. I think I might hang out for a while. It's kinda soothing, you know?"

;15
:"Ugh... Battles you can't afford to lose aren't any fun..."

;Aether House
* After Acerola's trial
:"If we want to get the Pokémon back... then <player> has to go to Po Town... All alone? With no backup? That's what they said, but...that's not fair!"
:"I-I'm sorry, <player>. It's my fault... Now you've got to put yourself in danger because...I couldn't stop them..."

;Aether House
* After defeating Guzma
:"<Player>... I'm sorry! I...I can't even make myself smile right now..."
:"That Plumeria lady came back as soon as Acerola had left..."
:"I'm supposed to be a Trainer! I've got all these Pokémon with me! But when it came down to it, Lillie had to protect me... Lillie, who's not even a Trainer to begin with!"
:"Geh! You know who Lillie is?!"

* If the player did not leave with Gladion
:"<Player>... What should we do? Even if I go to the ferry terminal, too... What if I just get in you guys' way? The way I am now, I'd just..."

;Malie City
:"<Player>!"
:"If I'd been stronger... If I'd been the kind of Trainer who could seize victory, like <Hau's starter Pokémon's first evolution stage> wants, too... Then Lillie wouldn't have... I'm ready to do whatever it takes now!"
:"But where was Lillie taken? It couldn't be Po Town. <Player> was there the whole time."
:"Aether Paradise?!"

;Aether Paradise
;B1F
:"But... Why would Lillie be here at Aether Paradise?"
:"Argh! This guy!"
:"Fine. So what are we going to do?"
:"You guess? And we're following this guy?! He doesn't have any plan!"

* If talked to before using the elevator
:"I don't get what is going on here... Why would the Aether Foundation be attacking anybody?!"

* If talked to after attempting to use the elevator
:"What were you doing there?"

;1F
:"Aue, look at you, <player>! And Faba is real strong, too!"
:"Downstairs?! Oh yeah! Ms. Wicke did say there was another level farther down, didn't she... What do you do down there?!"

* If the player selects "No"
:"Man, I'm like...stunned by so much of this..."

;B2F
:"Wow! It's like a secret hideout!"
:"So where do we go now?"
:"Why do you get the first one? And why do you know all this?"
:"You didn't even answer my question... I know what it's gotta be. Nerves, eh? I reckon that you're more afraid to be here than either one of us, huh, Gladion?"
:"Here, <player>. You take this."
:"Lillie must be scared right now... Let's buckle down and do this!"
:"Hey. Focus, people. Where're Lillie and Cosmog?"
:"Come on, <player>! Let's split up and look around. Maybe we'll find some clue!"

* If talked to again
:"Come on, <player>! At least help me look around, would ya?"

* After checking the computer
:"Wait... So Cosmog might be an Ultra Beast?"
:"We should tell Gladion about this!"

:"We learned a bit about Cosmog! Like, it might be an Ultra Beast or whatever... and if you stress it a lot, it can create Ultra Wormholes! Maybe to run away or something?"
:"But we didn't find any sign of it down here."
:"Gladion never really explains anything, eh? Probably thinks it makes him look cool..."
:"Should we go after him? We all got into this together. Might as well see it to the end together!"

;1F (after clearing B2F)
:"<Player>..."
:"What do we do?"
:"Fine, fine. We can do that. But do you have to say "hmph" all the time?"
:"Whoa! <Player>! Battle with me!"
:"Phew! Thanks, <player> and <first Pokémon in party>! If I really got my partner better, maybe I'd even be able to enjoy the kind of battle you can't afford to lose..."
:"What d'you mean "young master"?!"
:"The president? That's Miss Lusamine, right? She's a really nice person, so I'm sure she'll listen to us if we explain everything."
:"Again?!"
:"Wow, Mr. Faba! You're so nice!"
:"We didn't even have to ask you where the president was, and you just confirmed it for us! So the president is up ahead, huh? Thanks! Now we know where to find Cosmog and Lillie!"
:"Come on, <player>! I know <Hau's starter's final evolution Pokémon> and the rest of our Pokémon feel the same way we do. We can save Lillie and Cosmog for sure!"
:"I wanna help save Lillie, so I'm going ahead! You don't mind, right?!"
:"Thanks for even giving us the key, Mr. Faba! You've been a big help!"

;Outside
:"Whoa! There's, like, an uku billion Team Skull thugs in this place!"
:"So the foundation really was working together with Team Skull?"
:"This is, like, way too mind-blowing to think about right now. <Player>! Let's knock some skulls together for now!"

* If talked to again
:"Don't you do something that makes other people sad!"

;Trophy Room
:"Whoa! <Player>!"
:"Whoa-ho! And Lillie!"
:"Man, I'm so glad to see you're OK!"
:"What? Daughter? Son?"
:"Wait! You all are a family?!"

;Entrance Room
:"Yeah, I'm beat!"

;Outside (the next day)
:"<Player>!"
:"Hey, and it's Lillie...isn't it?! What happened to you?!"
:"You're all...amazing! That's it! I've decided!"
:"I keep getting saved by <player> and my partner <Hau's starter's final evolution Pokémon>, right?"
:"If I keep being like this and I don't change, then I'm gonna get left behind by you all."
:"I really wanted to save Lillie and Cosmog! When my partner and I both felt that way and we were in sync, we were so much stronger... That's how it felt to me. So..."
:"I'm gonna try to chase that feeling down again, together with <Hau's starter's final evolution Pokémon> and my team!"
:"Sure, you might've been a part of it... But in the end, the only one who's gonna make me change is me. And besides, Miss Lusamine is out there trying to keep Alola safe, right? I knew she was a good person!"

* If talked to again
:"Guess I should wish you guys a good trip, huh? I'm gonna train up myself and my team real good before I see you again, <player>. Be ready for the shock of a lifetime!"

;Hau'oli Cemetery
:"Hey! I know you're happy that we beat Ilima and all, but you've still gotta wait for me, partner! Oh! Hey, <player>! I heard the news from Gladion, you know. Savior of Alola, huh? Heh heh! I'm glad I got to set out on my island challenge together with such an awesome Trainer. But I'm not slacking off, either! It's good to have fun in battle, sure... But losing a battle because all you're really doing is having fun is...well... You can't let down your Pokémon when they're fighting their hardest for you, now can you?"
:"Right, <Hau's starter's final evolution Pokémon>?"
:"I know you want to win... And I'm gonna make sure that happens!"
:"And here, <player>. Have a Max Elixir! You should go ahead and use one when battle is dragging on and on!"
:"When we're both done with our island challenges, we should have a serious battle. You and me. Pokémon and their Trainers have gotta have their hearts in the same place if they're gonna win in battle! That's the way to really have a blast together!"

;Aether House
:"Hey! If it isn't <player> and Guzma! What're the two of you doing together?"
:"Oh yeah! I've got something I wanted to ask you, Guzma! That Golisopod you've got, yeah..."
:"So you got to meet your Pokémon partners by doing the island challenge and made some really great friends, too, huh?"
::Regardless of choice: "You know! Everybody in Team Skull! They all really love Guzma after all, right?"
:"Just you wait, Guzma! I'm gonna outdo even the kahunas! And I'm gonna make sure everybody knows they can be something great, whether they choose to do the island challenge or not!"
:"You didn't fail to become a captain, Guzma! No matter what you might think! So go become something else—something that nobody else has ever managed to be!"
:"<Player>! Consider this one last warning! I told you before, but once we both finish up our island challenges, we're gonna have a serious battle—you and me!"

;Pokémon League
* Before battle
:"It's me!"
:"You know what? Something kinda hit me after I finally beat my old gramps in an all-out serious battle. You're kinda my hero, <player>! You and your team are, I mean! And because I really look up to you... I really wanna have a serious battle against you! I really want to be able to win against you! 'Cause it's way more fun when Pokémon and their Trainers are all friends and get along. Then they can do something really amazing!"

* Upon being defeated
:"We're gonna keep moving forward, by staying at full power all the time!"

* After being defeated
:"We managed to pull off something pretty amazing, when my partners and I were all in sync and wanting the same thing. But looks like we're still one step away from being the strongest Trainer and team! But you know what's funny? Even though we lost, that was more exciting than any other battle I've ever had till now! Everything's all mixed up inside me—it was so fun and so frustrating, and just... Yup! It was just awesome, really!"
:"Come on, <player>! Let's go celebrate you becoming Alola's first ever Champion together with everybody! My old gramps said we'd have an awesome party, no matter which one of us won!"

;Iki Town
* After becoming Champion
:"I may have lost, but I'm gonna keep working hard to be totally in sync with my partners and pull out my Pokémon's full power! And THEN... I'm coming for you! Champion <player>!"

;Player's house
* After becoming Champion
:"A-lo-la! The salty breeze sang to me and brought me here to you!"
:"Oooh! And there's that Kantonian Meowth! Look at that shiny coin on your head, kitty-kitty!"
:"Meow to you, too!"
:"Oh, by the way! There were some pretty interesting people looking for you, too, <player>."
:"So, come on, let's get out there! The Champion of Alola doesn't get to just stay inside all day!"

;1
* After becoming Champion
:"Me and <Hau's starter's final evolution Pokémon> are gonna go, too!"

;Ancient Poni Path

Hau debuted in No Stone Unturned!, where he was training with Dartrix, only for its attacks to hit Ash, Rotom, and Pikachu.

In SM128, Hau met up with Ash and met ashcl for the Manalo Conference. He then assisted in the battle against Team Skull, battling Rapp and her Zubat with Decidueye and winning.

In SM129, Hau competed in the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference with his Raichu and was able to progress to the Top 16. The match-ups revealed that he would be battling Samson Oak. In SM130, Hau went up against Samson in the first round of the Manalo Conference. He used his Raichu against Samson's Alolan Exeggutor and eventually won, advancing to the second round.

In SM131, Hau approached Ash with his Decidueye upon learning that they would be battling each other in the next round of the Manalo Conference. In SM132, Hau went to search for Ash, who was late for their battle due to his training with Rowlet. After finding him and making it to the battlefield with him, Hau and Ash began their battle. During the battle, Decidueye was able to dodge Rowlet's Bloom Doom, before using its own Z-Move, Sinister Arrow Raid, which was barely avoided by Rowlet. The battle concluded in SM133 after Decidueye was defeated by Rowlet's Brave Bird, thus eliminating Hau from the tournament. Though he congratulated Ash for his victory, Hau was left dismayed by his loss, but he was comforted by Hala, who complimented him for the battle.

In SM135, Hau watched the battle between Kiawe and Gladion in the stands. He reappeared in SM136 and SM137, and in a flashback in SM138.

He will appear again in SM139 and SM140.

Hau debuted in The Decision and the Tournament of Six. He first appeared as a participant at an Iki Town festival tournament.

In The Announcement and the Prize, Hau faced Gladion in the first round. During their battle, Gladion asked why Hau joined the tournament and assumed he wanted to surpass his grandfather Hala. When Hau replied that he thought it would be fun, Gladion called him weak and won the battle.

When the Hau and the Captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord; and had them attack Hau and the Captains. Despite their best efforts, Hau and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging Ultra Beasts.

In PASM18, Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion.

<!--PASM32-->Six months later, Hau traveled to Exeggutor Island, where the Trial Captains and Island Kahunas had been training in preparation to face the Ultra Beasts.

Hau (Japanese: ハウ Hau) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is the grandson of the island kahuna for Melemele Island, Hala. He serves as one of the player's friends[6] and rivals in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon.

In the core series games

Character profile

Hau is a young, big-hearted boy that quickly becomes the player's friend as soon as they move to the Alola region. At the start of the story, the Pokémon loving boy is often laidback and enjoys Pokémon battles for fun, but over the course of his island challenge, he begins to feel more serious. Hau has a huge appeite, especially for Alola's famous local specialty, malasada, always looking for nearby malasada shops. Hau is typically excited about the Pokémon, people and locations he finds, stating that he took the island challenge the moment he had the chance to.[7] He loves Pokémon battles and battles the player at almost any opportunity, but remembers to heal up the player's party before any begin. Hau often means well, but his sense of curiosity and excitement can irritate others and cause himself to struggle in certain actions and consequences. In Pokémon Masters EX, his character description claims that he's often optimistic and and his smile can be infectious.[8] Hau has a sense of humor that others such as Lillie may not respond to very well. In response, this has lead to playful name calling, telling Lillie that she is a "stick in the sand."

Hau mentions that his father is not in Alola, and is likely on his own adventure, presumably in Kanto, with context saying that he will look for him and Lillie across the world after he asks the player about the region (to which Lillie left to, and the player is from).[9]

Appearance

Hau is big-hearted and constantly has a smile on his face

Hau is a young Alolan boy at around the age of 11. Hau has long dark green hair that he keeps tied up in a ponytail. His bangs are pulled back and two side bangs fall down to chin length. He wears two orange hair clips on the top of his head on opposite sides. This hair style gives him some resemblance to his grandfather, Hala, who wears his hair in a similar way. Hau has rounded eyes with no distinct eyelashes, his irises being completely black, leaving only a white glare in them.

Hau's only difference in design between versions is that he wears a white Z-Ring created by Hala on his left wrist in Sun and Moon, while in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he wears a black Z-Power Ring instead.

On Sunday nights, Hau will appear near the Malasada Shop.

On Akala Island

Hau occasionally meets up with the player throughout Akala Island, doing the same trials as them. He frequently asks the player to battle with them, such as in Paniola Town, where he tells them how he wishes to be strong like his grandfather, who has provided him with a Z-RingSM or Z-Power RingUSUM of his own. The two travel to Route 5 and have another encounter with Team Skull, this time with another member by the name of Gladion.

An Ultra Wormhole appears in front of the group and out comes an Ultra Beast, Hau tells the player to fight and distract the creature as he protects Lusamine from harm.

He does his trial off-screen, meeting up with the player again at Route 13, where they butt heads once again with Gladion.

Hau and his grandfather in Sun and Moon's credits

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Website blurb: "Hau is a boy who becomes your friend as soon as you move to Alola. He’s the same age as you. Hau is known to be a laid-back guy, but through the island challenge, he will come to terms with his reasons for participating in Pokémon battles."

After the player has obtained their first partner Pokémon from Professor Kukui on Route 1, Hau will appear and choose his own first partner Pokémon from the remaining two (which is always the one weak to the player's choice) before challenging the player into their first Trainer battle. When his grandfather shows up late in Iki Town, Hau berates him for his lateness. After the player has defeated Hala, instead of boarding Kukui's boat, Hau will invite the player to ride Mantine to Akala Island.

On Ula'ula Island, Hau will give the player a Lycanium Z after battling them after their arrival on the island. After the player defeats Guzma at Malie Garden, Guzma notices Hau and tells him that he shouldn't take the island challenge just because he's a kahuna's grandson. After the Aether Paradise incident, Hau realizes that he keeps failing to protect those he cares about, and becomes even more determined to become stronger.

When Necrozma fuses with Nebby during the game's climax and Ultra Beasts start appearing around Alola, Hau and Hala are seen coming face to face with a BlacephalonUS/StakatakaUM at Mahalo Trail. Hala chooses to entrust the battle to his grandson, who is soon joined in the battle by Tapu Koko. After the Necrozma crisis is over and the player starts taking on Mina's trial, the player encounters Hau and his fully evolved first partner Pokémon at Hau'oli Cemetery, also taking on Mina's trial.

After the player has defeated the Elite Four, instead of Professor Kukui challenging them to test the player's worthiness, Hau will appear to face the player as their final challenger at the Pokémon League to determine the Alola region's first Champion. This time, Hau takes the fight much more seriously and asks the player to use all their strength. He also once again appears in the Title Defense battles, now being the strongest possible challenger.

During the post-game, Hau will accompany the player to Poni Grove to help the Ultra Recon Squad deal with a group of BlacephalonUS/StakatakaUM that have appeared there. Regardless of how the player fares against the Ultra Beasts, Hau eventually manages to catch one, giving it to the Ultra Recon Squad for research purposes.

After the Ultra Beast incident at Poni Grove has been solved, Hau can be found at Iki Town, going through the memories of his island challenge with his first partner Pokémon. The Z-Crystals he gave to the player in Sun and Moon are now obtained from Hala instead.

Pokémon

The player will not black out in battles against Hau and the story will progress regardless of the outcome, except for battles taking place at Mount LanakilaSM or the Pokémon League.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Hau in the anime

Hau and Ash

In League Offenders and Defenders!, Hau caught up with Ash and met his classmates for the Manalo Conference. He later assisted in the battle against Team Skull, defeating Rapp and her Zubat.

From The Final Four! to The Wisdom Not to Run!, Hau watched the battles between Kiawe and Gladion, and Ash and Guzma. He then reappeared in a flashback in Final Rivals!.

In Enter the Champion!, Hau attended the award ceremony for the Manalo Conference victor, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole. In the following episode, Hau helped evacuate innocent civilians to safety, only for another, Shiny Guzzlord to emerge from another wormhole at the shopping area. By combining their Z-Moves, Hau, Gladion, Kiawe, Lana, Lillie, Sophocles, and Mallow managed to successfully knock the Shiny Guzzlord back into Ultra Space.

From Exhibition Unmasked! to From Z to Shining Z!, Hau watched the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui alongside Decidueye.

In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Hau was briefly seen battling Nanu in the Ula'ula Island grand trial, though the outcome of the battle wasn't shown.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Hau and Decidueye watched the Battle Royal match between Ash, Kukui, Gladion, and Kiawe.

Character

Hau is an energetic young Trainer keen to take on the Island challenge. His inexperience showed during his debut appearance in No Stone Unturned!, where he was confident though lacked direction in his battle style. Hau's focus and ability to foresee his opponent's strategy had improved by the eve of the Manalo Conference, which enabled him to advance to the Top 8 before he was defeated by Ash in their match in Battling on the Wing!. He is still learning to cope with defeat, though quickly calms himself down. He also values the experience of others as inspiration, especially Ash and his grandfather Hala.

Pokémon Adventures

Hau in Pokémon Adventures

Hau debuted in The Decision and the Tournament of Six. He first appeared as a participant at an Iki Town festival tournament.

In The Announcement and the Prize, Hau faced Gladion in the first round. During their battle, Gladion asked why Hau joined the tournament and assumed he wanted to surpass his grandfather Hala. When Hau replied that he thought it would be fun, Gladion called him weak and won the battle.

Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Type: Null.

Several months later, Hau decided to open a malasada and Tapu Cocoa shop. He was assisted by a reformed Guzma and received recipe tips from Mallow.
