Molayne (Japanese: マーレイン Mullein) is a non-player character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is a Pokémon Trainer who specializes in Steel-type Pokémon. Sophocles affectionately refers to him as Big Mo (Japanese: マーさん Mul-san). He also becomes a member of the Alola Elite Four in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

In the core series

Molayne is a former Trial Captain, runs the Hokulani Observatory, and manages the PC box system in Alola. He is a friend of Professor Kukui, the two having taken their island challenge around the same time. He will give the player a Steelium Z afterSM/beforeUSUM taking on Sophocles's trial. After the player has cleared the trial, Molayne also asks the player to deliver Kukui the mask he accidentally left behind.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Molayne is one of the many Trainers who challenge the player for the title of Pokémon Champion. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Molayne instead becomes a member of Alola's newly founded Elite Four by Professor Kukui's request, replacing Hala from Sun and Moon.

Unlike most other characters, Molayne is aware of Kukui's secret identity as the Battle Royal master "Masked Royal", even sometimes referring to Kukui by his alias.

Molayne in the anime

Molayne debuted in a picture in Love at First Twirl!, where he was introduced as Sophocles's cousin and a close friend of Professor Kukui during Sophocles's class presentation.

Molayne made his physical debut in Showering the World with Love!, where he showed Ash and his classmates around the Hokulani Observatory and, by Kukui's request, also taught them about the life cycle of Minior.

In Turning the Other Mask!, Molayne helped Kukui keep his Masked Royal identity a secret from Ash and Professor Burnet during a handshake event. Molayne came up with a plan that would allow Kukui to be present when Burnet shook the Masked Royal's hand which involved him taking over for Kukui as the Masked Royal. The next day, Molayne met up with Ash and Burnet and sat with them as Kukui wouldn't be present until the last minute. Molayne sat with them whilst Masked Royal and Incineroar put on a demonstration. During the event, Molayne attempted to take Kukui's place as the Masked Royal but was tied up by James and Faba, who had mistaken Molayne for an impostor. Later, when Mad Magmar attacked the event to get revenge on the Masked Royal, Kukui was unable to fight back since Faba had his Incineroar and costume at the time. After Molayne managed to free himself, he used his Magneton to turn the lights off, allowing Kukui to get his Masked Royal costume back in time to defeat Mad Magmar.

In Dreams of the Sun and Moon!, Sophocles mentioned plans to visit Mossdeep City and the Mossdeep Space Center with Molayne for his upcoming vacation. In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Molayne was shown leaving Alola with Sophocles.

In Lighting the Way Home!, Molayne appeared in a flashback when Sophocles told Ash and Goh how he had borrowed Molayne's Ampharos for use at the Mossdeep Space Center.

Character

Molayne tends to keep to himself and is notably cautious. However, he will go out of his way to help a friend, such as when he offered to impersonate Masked Royal for Professor Kukui during a meet-and-greet event in Turning the Other Mask!. His ingenuity and extensive knowledge on space is respected, especially by his young cousin Sophocles, who refers to Molayne as Big Mo (Japanese: マーさん Mul-san).

Magneton is Molayne's first known Pokémon. It was first seen interacting with Sophocles's Togedemaru after she had absorbed Pikachu's electricity, causing everyone around them to get shocked.

Magneton reappeared in Turning the Other Mask!, where it caused the lights to go out at the Hau'oli Mini-Mini Battle Royal Dome, allowing Kukui to change into Masked Royal and defeat Mad Magmar.

None of Magneton's moves are known.

After the equipment broke down, Ampharos temporarily lost its confidence, but with help from Pikachu, Togedemaru, and Raichu, it was able to guide the probe down.

None of Ampharos's moves are known.

Molayne in Pokémon Adventures

Molayne debuted in Truth and the Mastermind Behind Team Skull. He and Sophocles were first seen helping innocent civilians escape from the Ultra Beasts that had escaped from Po Town to wreak havoc on Ula'ula Island. They managed to evacuate the people to Hokulani Observatory, but with the beasts still on the loose, they worried that it may eventually get attacked as well. To circumvent this problem, Sophocles decided to use an invention designed to call Totem Pokémon to guide the beasts away from the observatory, though it never worked.

In The Truth and Island Kahuna Hapu, Molayne, Sophocles, Acerola, Professor Kukui, and Gladion fought off a Celesteela and Guzzlord at Route 10 to prevent them from reaching Hokulani Observatory. Gladion easily defeated Celesteela and later defeated Guzzlord to prevent it from hurting Lillie.

Later, Sophocles and Molayne told the Trial Captains and island kahunas to gather at Hokulani Observatory. With a Vikavolt-shaped airship, Molayne and Sophocles took the others to Mount Lanakila, where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts. With the Z-Moves they had acquired, Molayne and the others managed to defeat the Ultra Beasts.

Pokémon

Dugtrio
Molayne's Dugtrio

This Alolan Dugtrio is Molayne's only known Pokémon. It was first seen with its Trainer watching people be evacuated to Hokulani Observatory. It later fought against a Celesteela and Guzzlord to prevent them from attacking Hokulani Observatory, but was defeated. Later, it fought an Aether Foundation Employee's Nihilego and won with the help of a Z-Move.

None of Dugtrio's moves are known.*
Dugtrio can also perform the Z-Move Corkscrew Crash.
