Guzma (Japanese: グズマ Guzma) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is the leader of Team Skull. He is the only character in the games to have the Trainer class Team Skull Boss (Japanese: スカルだんボス Team Skull Boss). He specializes in Bug-type Pokémon.
In the games
Guzma first appears in Malie Garden, taunting Professor Kukui and calling both the professor and himself "fellow rejects who never could become captains". Guzma then criticizes Kukui's idea of building a Pokémon League for Alola; while he agrees that some parts of the island challenge are antiquated, he claims there is no need for a League, as he believes he is the strongest Trainer in the region. To solidify his position, his Grunts have been stealing every piece of Buginium Z across Alola simply to deny its use to other Trainers. When Kukui asks the player to battle Guzma, the boss takes notice of their Z-Ring, and asks why they're taking on the island challenge before immediately dismissing it and accepting Kukui's terms. The player wins, and Guzma leaves, saying he'll remember the encounter.
Later on, the player travels to Po Town to retrieve a Yungoos Team Skull stole from a child living at the Aether House. After getting past an army of Team Skull Grunts and infiltrating their headquarters, the Shady House, the player comes face-to-face with Guzma, who is holding the Yungoos in his personal quarters. He returns the Yungoos after losing to the player again, but vows that he will one day defeat them.
However, it is subsequently revealed that Team Skull's kidnapping of the Yungoos was a distraction meant to draw the player away from the Aether House so Plumeria could abduct Lillie. At this point, Gladion openly betrays Team Skull and recruits both the player and Hau for a mission to rescue Lillie from where Team Skull took her — Aether Paradise. As the player, Hau and Gladion fight through the Aether Foundation Employees who, along with Faba, are guarding Aether Paradise on Lusamine's orders, they discover a large group of Team Skull Grunts personally led by Guzma guarding the path to Lusamine's mansion, revealing that Lusamine has been secretly controlling Team Skull. Gladion rushes ahead to attempt to defeat Guzma and open the path for the player, but fails, leaving the player to battle Guzma one last time themselves. Guzma relents and allows the player to enter Lusamine's mansion after falling once more. A short while later, he rushes to Lusamine's side after she opens the Ultra Wormhole using Nebby's powers, unleashing Ultra Beasts all over Alola. Encouraging Lusamine to capture the Nihilego that appears in the room so it can be used to crush the player and their friends, Guzma ends up in a battle with Hau while Gladion tries to defeat Nihilego and the player fights Lusamine. Upon her defeat, the Ultra Wormhole and Nihilego begin to disappear. Unwilling to let her plans be thwarted, Lusamine enters the portal, taking Guzma with her.
Guzma is not seen again until after the player and Lillie have helped Nebby recover and evolve from Cosmoem into SolgaleoS/LunalaM. The Legendary Pokémon transports the player and Lillie into Ultra Space, where they discover Guzma sitting alone, separated from Lusamine. He reveals that once they arrived in Ultra Space, he tried to capture a Nihilego of his own, only for it to use its parasitic powers to control him. Claiming that he has always lived his life making people afraid of him, Guzma admits that this experience has made him feel true fear for the first time, and warns the player and Lillie that they are stupid for coming to Ultra Space and tells them that Lusamine is too far gone into her insanity to be saved. He sits out and watches as the player battles Lusamine and subsequently separates her from the Nihilego she fused with using the aid of SolgaleoS/LunalaM and is saved from Ultra Space along with the others when SolgaleoS/LunalaM uses its powers to return them to the real world. Upon arrival, Hapu meets the group and has Guzma help her take away the unconscious Lusamine on her Mudsdale.
Once the player becomes Champion, it is revealed that Guzma disbanded Team Skull after returning from Ultra Space. To reflect this new start in life, he no longer wears his gold chain bearing Team Skull's insignia, paints a red X over the insignia on his coat, removes his Team Skull tattoos and changes his sunglasses to a symmetrical pair of round lenses. He can be found in his parents' home on Route 2, where he tells the player to meet him on Hau'oli City's beachfront. There, he expresses a continuing desire to finally defeat the player and challenges them once again. Upon his loss, Hala appears and tells him that he cannot win because he does not recognize his opponents' strength. Hala promises to make a fine trainer out of Guzma, and Guzma leaves after gifting the player his lucky charm, a Dawn Stone. In Moon only, he appears as a potential challenger and Multi Battle teammate at the Battle Tree. In Sun, this appearance is fulfilled by Plumeria instead.
Throughout the game, the player can discover hints about Guzma's past and motivations. He once earned many trophies for Pokémon battling that are still on display in his parents' home, but at some point after taking on his island challenge, he ran away from home. He apparently aspired to become a captain, but was unable to. At some point, he was part of a group centered around a previous kahuna, but after it was struck down by the wrath of one of the guardian deities, Team Skull would rise from its ashes. Guzma wants to fight back against Alola's traditions and assert his own strength. He ultimately fell under Lusamine's influence because she was the only adult who ever acknowledged his strength as a Trainer, inspiring his loyalty to her until the events in Ultra Space.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, when the player and Lillie prepare to open the Ultra Wormhole to pursue Guzma and Lusamine into Ultra Space, the pair are thrown out of a wormhole before the player and Lillie can do so. They are followed by Necrozma, who attacks and absorbs Nebby before opening many Ultra Wormholes and fleeing back to Ultra Megalopolis. When the player returns from defeating Necrozma in Ultra Megalopolis, Guzma has regained consciousness and reflects on the conversation he overhears about working together with others. Later, during the game's credits, he and Plumeria are shown at the Shady House announcing the disbanding of Team Skull to its members.
During Episode RR, Guzma appears at Team Rocket's Castle to assist the player against a pair of Team Rainbow Rocket Grunts. He mentions that while he has nothing anymore, not even Team Skull, there are certain things he cannot let go of, and by invading Aether Paradise, Team Rainbow Rocket has violated one of those things. He remains in the lobby of the castle, holding off two Grunts while the player defeats the various bosses in the castle en route to Giovanni, who is holding Lusamine hostage. Later, once the player has defeated Giovanni, he appears with Wicke and Colress as Lusamine regains consciousness and witnesses Faba's downfall.
In addition to appearing at the Battle Tree in Ultra Moon, Guzma can be found in both versions near Plumeria's trailer on Route 13, promising to protect those he cares about even without being a captain. He can also appear as a potential challenger during Title Defense battles at the Pokémon League.

- Malie Garden
- "Battle Royal, huh? Nice idea there, Kukui. You can beat down three Pokémon at once, huh?"
- "The hated boss who beats you down, and beats you down, and never lets up... Yeah. Big bad Guzma is here!"
- "Greetings, cowering public!"
- "We have an exciting bout for you tonight! In the opposing corner, the Pokémon professor Kukui! And in this corner, the boss of Team Skull and the hardest guy around, Guzma!"
- "Here we are, Kukui... Fellow rejects who never could become captains."
- "We've got all these moldy old traditions in Alola—the kahunas, the captains... It's about time we cut out all that silly garbage and make something new for ourselves. Trust me, I get that."
- "Don't get me wrong, though, Kukui. We've got no need for a Pokémon League. After all, everyone already knows who the strongest Trainer is on these islands!"
- "So you're one of the kids on his/her island challenge? You don't look like Hala's grandson."
- "Tch! This move fanatic is getting me all riled up!"
- "You've got a Z-Ring, huh, kid?"
- "Why even bother with the island challenge? What's the point of it?"
- It'll make me strong: "No it won't, you dumb kid! Watch closely, Kukui. Someday I'm gonna destroy you. But first, I'll destroy everything you care about!"
- That's what I want to find out: "Ha! You don't even know why you're doing it. Watch closely, Kukui. Someday I'm gonna destroy you. But first, I'll destroy everything you care about!"
- Before battle
- "Wanna see what destruction looks like? Here it is in human form—it's your boy Guzma!"

- Shady House
- "The hated boss who beats you down and beats you down and never lets up... Yeah. Big bad Guzma is here!"
- "I don't really get you, kid, but at least this is a change of pace. It's not every day someone comes straight to me for a beating!"
- I'm not here for you: "No bone to pick with me, huh? Then it's for Yungoos, I guess. How sweet of you to help out a sad little girl. Tch!"
- I'm here for the Pokémon: "Oh, Yungoos? How sweet of you to help out a sad little girl. Tch!"
- "And you came all the way here just for that, huh? Can't you just watch out for your own Pokémon and stay out of other people's business?!"
- "You're one messed up kid!"
- "You wanna know what I do when some machine messes up? The first thing I do is give it a nice hard smack!"
- "I mean, most of the time I smash it to pieces, but hey, what can you do? Now let's see if I can't fix you!"
- Upon being defeated
- "Yeah, yeah. I gotta admit, that was great!"
- After being defeated
- "Guzma! What is wrong with you?!"
- "Yo! Give the Pokémon back to the kid. NOW!"
- "Tch!"
- "I'm gonna beat you down one of these days! No matter whose help I need to do it..."
- Aether Paradise

- "The hated boss who beats you down and beats you down and never lets up... Yeah. Big bad Guzma is here!"
- "I did that spoiled little brat a favor and crushed him. Yeah, that was me. Y'know, I kinda liked you, kid. Leaving home like that and wanting to get stronger and stronger. You had some real guts. Going so far as coming over to Team Skull. And rejecting your own mother?! That was impressive."
- "And now it's your turn! You little misfits keep getting up in my grill, like a cloud of smoke that I can't brush away. It's time I put out your fire at the source!"
- Upon being defeated
- "Hey, what's up with you? How come I can't smash you?!"
- After being defeated
- "Guzma! What is wrong with you?!"
- "Tch. Looks like I got no choice. Go on...go through."
- If talked to again
- "If I want to beat you down... I've gotta get at least as strong as you! I can't believe you beat me down like that!"
- Trophy Room
- "Madam Prez... the experiment was a success, huh? Looks like it's time to catch this wicked Ultra Beast to beat down these annoying upstarts!"
- After battling Lusamine
- "Yes, ma'am..."
- Ultra Space
- "I'm the Team Skull boss, and I've never been scared of nothing or nobody. Heck, I live my life making people scared of ME! So listen to what big bad Guzma has to say..."
- "Y'all are stupid!"
- "How in the world did you even get to this place? I've got no idea how you did it, but here you are."
- "It's all dark here... I've got no clue what's going on, but there's beasts everywhere... I tried to catch one of those things..."
- "but it possessed me! And that's when it happened! My body, my mind... They started running wild, and I couldn't do anything about it!"
- "It was like I became somebody else, and I finally felt what fear feels like! It was terrifying!"
- "I may be the Team Skull boss, and I've never been scared of nothing or nobody, but..."
- "that lady...she's on another level! She's way far gone! She lost her mind over these Ultra Beasts. There's no talking to her, no reasoning with her... She's just gone..."
- After battling Lusamine
- "What now?! What's going on?! And just when things were getting good!"
- Altar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM
- "Huh? Oh..."
- Route 2 (after the player becomes Champion)
- "You little brat!"
- "I don't know what you think you're doing here, but I actually needed to talk to you. Get your rear over to the Hau'oli City Beachfront!"
- Hau'oli City Beachfront (after the player becomes Champion)
- "So you showed up..."
- "Well, <player>, it's time to battle your boy!"
- Wait a minute...: "What did you think I asked you to come here for?!"
- Here I come!: "This is to make up for when I had to disband Team Skull! Just so you know, I'll never change! Wanna see what destruction looks like? Here it is in human form—it's your boy Guzma!"
- Upon being defeated
- "You again? How come I can't crush you?!"
- After being defeated
- "Guzma! What is wrong with you?! This outcome hasn't changed at all either!"
- "You came all the way here just to watch me lose, huh? Must be nice to be a lazy old island kahuna with nothing better to do..."
- "You wanna get beat down, old man?"
- "I don't care what you say to me, yo. Beating people down is all I know!"
- "What do you know, old man?!"
- "You're still trying to front like you're my master, huh? I gave up on you a long time ago."
- "Tch!"
- "Master..."
- "I ain't never gonna ask you to forgive me, so don't get it twisted—this is no apology! But shut up and take this! I got it for my first ever victory, and it's always been like my lucky charm!"
- "Who knows what the Alolan winds will bring? Next time we meet, I'm counting on you to test how strong I've gotten."
- Before battle
- "Doesn't matter who I'm up against, I'm gonna beat them down! That's what big bad Guzma is all about!"
- Upon being defeated
- "I guess that's how it is, Champion! But I'm not beat down yet!"
- If the player is defeated
- "Not yet! I could still keep wrecking! Come at me as many times as you want!"

In the anime
Guzma debuted in The Dealer of Destruction!, where he watched from Team Skull's base at the Shady House as Professor Kukui announced the Alola League on TV. The next day, he; Plumeria; and Team Skull Grunts Tupp, Zipp, and Rapp arrived on Melemele Island. There, he met Team Rocket and quickly defeated them. Guzma later arrived at the Pokémon School and confronted Professor Kukui, before being challenged to a battle by Ash, which he accepted.
Guzma battled Ash's Pikachu with his Golisopod, but the battle ended prematurely after Golisopod returned to its Poké Ball due to Emergency Exit. Afterwards, he swore that he would destroy the Alola League himself before leaving with his allies. Later, Guzma went to his room at the Shady House and punched the wall after recalling Professor Kukui asking him if he was running away from a challenge, as he had done in the past with the island challenge and Island Kahunas.
In League Offenders and Defenders!, Guzma and Plumeria intervened in a confrontation Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp were having with Ash and his friends at Manalo Stadium. He was about to battle Ash's group, but Professor Kukui and Hala arrived. Guzma confronted Professor Kukui and revealed that he had enrolled as a contestant in the Manalo Conference; furthermore, he announced his intention to destroy Professor Kukui's dreams by becoming Champion and then ensuring another Pokémon League would never take place in Alola.
After Guzma and his teammates left, Hala explained that in the past, both Guzma and Kukui were his apprentices, but Guzma grew disillusioned with Hala's teachings and rejected them both, instead resolving to become strong on his own without the need for a Z-Ring or Z-Crystals. Later, Guzma and Plumeria were among the Trainers gathered at the party commemorating the Manalo Conference's opening. He grew angry upon seeing the celebratory mood of Professor Kukui and the other attendees, drawing Plumeria's concern.
In Battle Royal 151!, Guzma competed in the Manalo Conference with his Scizor. He was able to progress to the Top 16, although Plumeria and the other participating Team Skull Grunts were defeated. The match-ups revealed that he would be battling Ilima.
In Battling Besties!, Guzma went up against Ilima, using his Scizor to battle Ilima's Kangaskhan. Despite Ilima Mega Evolving Kangaskhan, Scizor was able to defeat its opponent by positioning itself so that Kangaskhan's baby was always in the middle, endangering its well-being and causing the mother to hesitate often enough to be defeated. This allowed Guzma to advance to the second round.
In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, it was revealed that Lana would be Guzma's opponent in the second round. In The Road to The Semifinals!, Guzma and Lana began their battle, with Guzma using Golisopod against Lana's Primarina. With his ruthless tactics, Guzma was able to defeat Lana with relative ease and advance to the semifinals. The match-ups revealed that he would battling Ash in the semifinals. In The Final Four!, Guzma assured his Grunts that he would destroy the entire League and brushed off Plumeria's concerns about him facing Ash.
Right after, in Getting Down to The Ire!, Guzma went up against Ash, using his Scizor to battle his Torracat. He quickly recalled Scizor in favor of using Golisopod, only for Golisopod to activate Emergency Exit during the match and send Scizor out in its place, resulting in it being quickly defeated by Fire Blast. Angered by Golisopod's cowardice, Guzma sent it out again and berated it on having made Scizor lose.
The battle continued in The Wisdom Not to Run!, during which Guzma finally started to realize his own cowardice through defeating only weak opponents and running away from battles against strong ones. Despite the strength of Ash's Pikachu, Golisopod still wanted to continue battling, but the battle ultimately led to Guzma's loss. The audience applauded for the great battle and Kukui hoped to see Guzma participating next year as well, but Guzma considered his reputation ruined and was ready to disband Team Skull. However, Plumeria and the Team Skull Grunts were so fired up by the battle that they wanted stay by his side and learn to battle as well as he did.
Guzma reappeared in a flashback in Final Rivals!.
In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Guzma and Golisopod were seen training with his underlings as Plumeria looked on.
Character
Guzma has a great amount of determination, which was best showcased during the Manalo Conference, where he entered with the strong hopes of destroying it from within. Guzma uses dirty tactics in order to win, as seen during his battle against Ilima, where he had his Scizor position itself so that Kangaskhan's baby was always in the middle, endangering her well-being and causing the mother to hesitate often enough to be defeated. This was seen again during his battle against Lana, when he had Golisopod ruthlessly attack Primarina without mercy.
Although his fighting style is questionable, he never breaks the rules. Despite his brutality, he is a careful fighter who observes his opponents and adapts his Pokémon's next moves accordingly, both by not falling for the same tricks twice and by trying to find a weakness he can exploit. All of this is done with cold and calculating precision, with him taking full advantage of any chance that comes.
Guzma completely disavowed the use of Z-Rings and Z-Crystals because, in his youth, he never learned to understand them properly and was bitter for always losing exercise battles against Kukui, despite the latter always commending his growth as a Trainer. After resolving to become strong in his own, Guzma built his reputation among Team Skull as "the Undefeated" by actually defeating only weak Trainers and retreating from battles against stronger Trainers with an excuse that he would have won anyways due to the damage his brutal tactics would do to his opponents' Pokémon. It was only during his battle against Ash in the Manalo Conference when Guzma was finally forced to admit his own cowardice and Golisopod, who had previously shared the same personality traits as him, now convinced him to let go of his fear of losing and keep battling until the end.

Golisopod is Guzma's first known Pokémon. It was first used to battle Ash's Pikachu, but the match ended prematurely when Golisopod returned to its Poké Ball due to Emergency Exit. It was used again in The Road to The Semifinals! during the second round of the Alola League, where it emerged victorious against Lana's Primarina.
In Getting Down to The Ire!, Golisopod was sent out against Ash's Torracat in the semifinals. Despite having a type advantage, the two were evenly matched, with Golisopod taking several hard hits. Golisopod proved to be a cowardly Pokémon, as it used Emergency Exit once faced with a Fire Blast, forcing its teammate Scizor to come out and take the attack despite having a double type-disadvantage to it. This led to Scizor being knocked out, infuriating Guzma, who had a different strategy in mind that was now ruined. Following this, Golisopod was sent back out. The battle continued in the next episode, where Golisopod managed to defeat Torracat, but was knocked out by Pikachu after a lengthy battle.
Golisopod reappeared in flashbacks in Final Rivals! and From Z to Shining Z!.
Golisopod reappeared in Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, where Guzma used it to train his underlings.
Golisopod's known moves are First Impression, Pin Missile, Liquidation, Poison Jab, and Throat Chop, and its Ability is Emergency Exit.

Scizor is Guzma's second known Pokémon. It first appeared in Battle Royal 151!, where Guzma used it during the Manalo Conference preliminary round, defeating a Kommo-o. It was one of the 16 Pokémon that remained standing by the end, allowing its Trainer to advance to the actual tournament.
In Battling Besties!, Scizor was used by Guzma to battle Ilima and his Kangaskhan. Despite Ilima Mega Evolving Kangaskhan, Scizor was able to defeat its opponent through strategy, allowing Guzma to progress to the second round.
In Getting Down to The Ire!, Scizor was the first Pokémon Guzma used during his battle against Ash in the semifinals, where it went up against Torracat. After using U-turn, Scizor returned to its Poké Ball and switched with Golisopod due to it having a double type-disadvantage against Torracat. However, Golisopod later retreated from a Fire Blast and sent out Scizor without warning, leaving it with no time to dodge or counter the move. As a result, Scizor took a direct hit and was knocked out.
Scizor reappeared in a flashback in The Wisdom Not to Run!.
Scizor known moves are Bullet Punch, Agility, X-Scissor, and U-turn.

Guzma debuted in The Delivery of Rotom and the Girl. He was first seen berating a pair of Team Skull Grunts after they were defeated by Sun. He ordered the Grunts to go and find Sun so he could personally teach him a lesson.
In The Announcement and the Prize, Guzma traveled to Iki Town during a festival. After finding the Grunts hosting a Slowpoke Tail stand, he knocked Grunt A out for not informing him Sun was there and took his place in the festival tournament. In the second round, Guzma went up against Sun, but lost after Sun's Cent flew into a rage when Guzma's Golisopod accidentally dirtied the coin on its head. Angered, Guzma beat himself up in frustration until Grunt A stopped him. Bleeding from his injuries, Guzma congratulated his Pokémon for their hard work before leaving with the Grunts.
In Going Ashore and Neighboring Akala Island, Guzma met Gladion at the Ruins of Conflict. Praising the boy's skill at the festival tournament, Guzma offered Gladion a position in Team Skull as an Enforcer. Gladion immediately accepted, but questioned Guzma about a person he mentioned during the tournament. Guzma feigned ignorance and told Gladion to follow him to Team Skull's hideout.
In A Raid and Po Town, Po Town was infiltrated by five of Alola's Trial Captains and Hau. Overhearing the commotion, Guzma revealed himself, demanding to know why his base had intruders. The Captains only wanted to talk, but Guzma only agreed on the condition they made it to him first. A Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord then appeared and rampaged, attacking everything in sight. Later, Sun arrived and the found the Captains and Hau battling the Ultra Beasts. Annoyed that they survived, Guzma revealed he was in possession of a Cosmog, which he used to open more Ultra Wormholes to summon more Ultra Beasts. Gladion then appeared and revealed his true goal was to destroy the Ultra Beasts.
In Truth and the Mastermind Behind Team Skull, Gladion used his Type: Null to battle the beasts, which it did with ease as it was created by the Aether Foundation specifically for that purpose. Gladion then revealed Guzma received Cosmog from the Aether Foundation's president, Lusamine. To Guzma's surprise, the Xurkitree summoned from one of the newer wormholes attacked him. Gladion explained that Guzma was just being used by Lusamine to fuel her desire of a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Guzma denied the accusation, but was grabbed by the Nihilego that also came from a new wormhole. Moon rushed in to try and rescue Guzma, but was stopped by Xurkitree, allowing Nihilego to drag him into the wormhole with it.
Half a year later, in PASM30, Mina and Wicke found an injured Guzma on Poni Island and moved him to a camp on Exeggutor Island to recuperate. Guzma revealed he was possessed by Nihilego after it dragged him to the Ultra Deep Sea. Sometime later, Guzma and Nihilego ended up back in Alola, where they were found by Lusamine, who caught Nihilego for herself. Curious about being one with an Ultra Beast, Lusamine allowed herself to be taken over multiple times, eventually fusing with Nihilego into a single entity. Worried that she may not be able to return to being human, Guzma begged the others to save Lusamine.
Several months later, a reformed Guzma was seen helping Hau prepare food for the malasada and Tapu Cocoa shop the latter planned to open.
