Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is the Champion of the Sinnoh region's Pokémon League in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
In the games
Cynthia makes her first appearance in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, where she meets up with the player at various points during their journey. She will first meet the player in Eterna City, where she will give them HM01 (Cut) when first met. In Platinum only, she will give the player a Togepi Egg after the player has defeated Jupiter in the Team Galactic Eterna Building. At Valor Lakefront, she gives the player the SecretPotion to cure the Psyduck blocking Route 210. After the player cures the Psyduck, Cynthia appears again and gives the player the Old Charm to deliver to her grandmother. Later, she appears at the Pokémon League as the Champion.
In Platinum only, Cynthia also appears at the Spear Pillar once Cyrus has been dragged into the Distortion World by Giratina, and will guide the player through the said world in order to confront Giratina. During the post-game, she will appear at the Celestic Town ruins and tell the player about them.
In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia makes an appearance in the Sinjoh Ruins, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the creation trio. If the player has an Arceus with a fateful encounter marker or from the Hall of Origin when they visit the Ruins of Alph, the player will be teleported to the Sinjoh Ruins. Inside a cabin at the ruins, the player will find Cynthia, who will tell the player that Arceus will let them obtain a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. If the player returns to the Sinjoh Ruins with another Arceus (that doesn't have the same origin as the one they used the first time), they will be informed that Cynthia has returned to Sinnoh, and the event will run without her.
In Generation V, Cynthia appears in a house in Undella Town, where she can be battled. She leaves after being defeated for the first time and afterwards reappears during spring and summer. During spring, she can be rebattled once a day. After defeating her, Shauntal and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house in the spring, and, in Black and White only, Lenora, Elesa, Iris, and Skyla visit in the summer. In Black and White, she speaks about a young Trainer who defeated her, and mentions that Trainer defeated Giratina, referring to the events of Platinum. In Black 2 and White 2, Cynthia can also be battled in the Champions Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament.
In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Cynthia appears in Alola's Battle Tree as an opponent that the player can battle and subsequently recruit.
Cynthia is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time researching and exploring various sites associated with Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region. Her family lives in Celestic Town, although her own hometown was not mentioned. She is implied to have helped Professor Rowan with his Pokédex and embarked on an adventure as a child, similar to the player.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
- Eterna City
- "Oh, is that a Pokédex? You must be helping Professor Rowan? What's your name? ... OK, hello, <player>. I'll be sure to remember that name! My name is Cynthia. I'm a Trainer just like you. I've been studying Pokémon mythology lately, just out of curiosity. Here in Eterna City, there is a statue of an ancient Pokémon. According to myth, it was an extremely powerful Pokémon. Who knows? You may encounter something like it while you're traveling with your Pokédex. Try using this. It should help you on your way. Remember, the hidden move Cut can be used in the field. It will let you go places that were previously inaccessible to you. That's important for filling up your Pokédex, right? Then luck be with you, young Trainer!"
- Valor Lakefront
- "Oh , hello , long time no see! How is your Pokédex filling up? I came to research the folklore about the lake, but... Well, it doesn't appear as if the lake is open to the public now. Have you heard the folklore about it? They say there is an island inside the lake. And inside that island is a mirage of a Pokémon . No one must enter the chamber of that Pokémon... Oh that's right! i had to talk to you about something else... He's your friend? He's more impatient than energetic, isn't he? So, getting back to what I started saying earlier... Have you seen the group of Psyduck on Route 210?
- No: "You haven't seen them? By the café on Route 210.
- Yes: "Yes that's right. By the café on Route 210. There is a group of Psyduck huddled with their heads in their, uh, hands...? Anyway, what you should do is use medicine on the Psyduck. You're working on a Pokédex, so it would be worthwhile for you. I went on a big adventure with a Pokédex when I was younger. I hope you meet every kind of Pokémon there is to see. It may help you with the secret of the mirage Pokémon. See you later!
- Route 210
- "Oh, good. You used the SecretPotion I gave you. Psyduck are known to suffer from chronic headaches. But no one's been able to figure out what triggers the headaches. Oh yes! Can I ask you a big favor? I want to deliver this Old Charm to my grandma in Celestic Town. I know there are some rare Pokémon between here and Celestic Town, so it will be worth your while to go.
- Yes: "My grandma has this sort of bossy atmosphere about her. I think you'll recognize her right away. Yes, I'm sure you will. She's the elder of Celestic Town. And the location... Look on your Town Map. You can't miss it. Ok, I'm counting on you! See you again on the road!
- Before battle (first time)
- "Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"
- Before battle (rematch)
- "One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"
- After sending out last Pokémon
- "I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"
- When the last Pokémon is at critical health
- "I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"
- Being defeated
- "Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"
Pokémon Platinum
- Eterna City
- "Oh, that device you have... It is a Pokédex? Wow, it brings back some memories. Pardon me, but what's your name? ... OK, hello, <player>. I'll be sure to remember that name! My name is Cynthia. I'm a Trainer just like you. I've been studying Pokémon mythology lately, just out of curiosity. Here in Eterna City, there is a statue of an ancient Pokémon. Have you seen it already? According to myth, it was an extremely powerful Pokémon. Who knows? You may encounter something like it while you're traveling with your Pokédex. Oh, I know! Try using this. It should be helpful. Remember, the hidden move Cut can be used in the field. It will let you go places that were previously inaccessible to you. That's important for filling up your Pokédex, right? Then luck be with you, young Trainer! Oh, there's one last thing! Please give my regards to Prof. Rowan."
- "Oh, there you are! I was looking for you. I've got something nice. I wanted you to have this Pokémon Egg. Will you accept it?"
- No: "Oh...? You don't need to feel obligated. It's hard filling the pages of the Pokédex, isn't it? I only want to lend you a little hand, that's all."
- Full party: "Oh? You have six Pokémon with you already. You don't have room for this Egg. You'll have to store a Pokémon in a PC Box at the Pokémon Center first. I'll give you this Egg when you've made room for it. I'll be waiting right here."
- If player steps towards the Bicycle Shop: "Oh, wait! Don't leave without this Pokémon Egg. Please? I want you to have it."
- If player asks again: "Well? Will you accept this Pokémon Egg?"
- Yes: "That's wonderful! The Pokémon inside the Egg is happy, too. I'm sure of it! Keep that Egg with you in your party of Pokémon. A Pokémon will hatch from it while you are traveling. I would be happy to know that it will help you fill another page of your Pokédex. See you again!"
- Celestic Town
- "By the way, were the ruins fun to explore? If you're interested, there is a library in Canalave City. It's stocked with ancient books. You can loop up Sinnoh history there. It might help you complete your Pokédex, too. The quickest way to Canalave City is to go west from Jubilife City.
- Spear Pillar
- "No...! I'm sorry I took so long. I think I finally found the answer from studying the myths. When this world was made, Dialga and Palkia appeared. Apparently, there was one more Pokémon that appeared at the same time. A Pokémon with as much power as Dialga and Palkia... But also one whose name was never to be spoken--Giratina! It's said to lurk in another world... A world on the opposite side of ours... That's what the shadow was. It must have been Giratina. The pillars are distorting... It's because of that portal. It's joined us to the other world. If it's not closed, the distortion will spread to Sinnoh and beyond... Our world will be destroyed... Are you ready? We have to chase Cyrus!"
- No: "You need to get ready? I'll wait here."
- Yes: "We have to hurry!"
1F
- "This place... Can you feel it? There are no Pokémon here at all. Time isn't flowing and space isn't stable. A world where the rules are broken. A space one might call the Distortion World... Let's find Giratina. We need it to stop the spreading distortion at the Spear Pillar..."
- "That was... Giratina...! We have to hurry! If something's not done the distortion will swallow not only our world, it will overwhelm the Distortion World..."
- "This rock slab... It appears to move if you step a certain spot."
B1F
- "Will we get to see Giratina if we keep going down? ...In the Distortion World, are we really traveling downward?"
- "The legend of Giratina has been forgotten but to a few... The legend told of a world on the other side of ours. This world. Why does this world exist? Why is Giratina here all alone? There's too much that can't be explained but we have things to do. Let's split up. We have to find the right way."
- If talked to again
- "We don't need to go together now. Let's keep looking for the way down."
- "This place... It seems to be a giant puzzle. Maybe Giratina wants to test those that visit here? It appears as if we can't go unless we solve the puzzle. There were some boulders that could be moved... And there are several odd pits on the floor... The Pokémon of the lakes seem eager to show us something..."
B6F
- After solving the Lake Trio's puzzle
- "I guess the Pokémon of the lakes must have gone home. I understand that they can keep balance against either Palkia or Dialga. Does it mean they can't do that with Giratina? ...Oops. This is no time for idle chitchat."
- If talked to again after the invisible platform appears
- "Call it a Trainer's intuition, but we're getting close. Let's go on!"
B7F
- "This is it... Giratina is up ahead..."
- "...So you were already here. Why do you seek to change the world? If you hate our world you should just go off somewhere alone. Find somewhere where you can live without seeing others."
- If talked to before defeating Cyrus
- "But... That's no justice at all!"
- After defeating Cyrus
- "Don't believe his lies. It's not possible that a Pokémon can make the world disappear. The world awaited your birth. Not only yours, either. The Pokémon with you. The people close to you. All the Pokémon and people were born because they have a part in the world. I'm convinced of that. Giratina won't go out of existence. The Distortion World won't disappear. Our world won't disappear, either. Let's go meet Giratina. ...Oops. I should do something about your hardworking Pokémon first. Now let's go meet Giratina!"
- "Giratina is enraged because the two worlds are endangered. It has merged the Distortion World and our world at the Spear Pillar. That's why both worlds are becoming distorted. But there's nothing to fear. You can defeat Giratina and show the tight bond you share with your Pokémon. Or you can demonstrate how much you want it to join you. If you succeed in doing either, Giratina will understand. The distortion of the two worlds will stop!"
- If talked to again
- "I know that the bond you share with your Pokémon is strong!"
- After battle with Giratina
- "Giratina seems to have understood us!"
- "...The places we are born. The time we spend living... The languages we speak... We are all different. But the presence of Pokémon unites us. We share our lives with our Pokémon and our happiness grows as we all become greater than we were alone. That is why we can battle and trade with anyone we choose..."
- "... ... Since there is sadness, we can feel joy. When there is anger, compassion is born... Let's go back home. The portal where Giratina was should lead back to our world. Giratina was written as being on the other side of our world. It stands to a reason that it has a link to the other side."
- If talked to again: "Let's go back home. The portal where Giratina was should lead back to our world. Giratina was written as being on the other side of our world. It stands to a reason that it has a link to the other side."
- Sendoff Spring
- "...This place?! It's the Sendoff Spring... It's said to somehow lead to the great beyond... And Giratina was said to live in a world on the opposite side of ours. Oh! I'm sincerely sorry! It's very rude of me! <Player>, you are incredible! You're really a fantastic trainer! Let me say this on behalf of all Sinnoh: <Player>, thank you! Oh! That's right! You have to tell Prof.Rowan! He was very worried about you. You should visit him at his lab."
- If talked to again: "You have to go tell Prof. Rowan about this at his lab. He was very worried about you."
- After talking to Professor Rowan
- "Sigh...I wish I could have battled Giratina. Oh don't mind me. I'm only musing out loud. You deserve the glory and thanks for what you did."
- Before battle
- "Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. And the Distortion World.
- After sending out last Pokémon
- "I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"
- During battle (less than half HP)
- "I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"
- Being defeated
- "...Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"
- After being defeated
- "That was excellent. Truly, an outstanding battle. You gave the support your Pokémon needed to maximize their power. And you guided them with certainty to secure victory. You have both passion and calculating coolness. Together, you and your Pokémon can overcome any challenge that may come your way. Those are the impressions I got from our battle. I'm glad I got to take part in the crowning of Sinnoh's new Champion! Come with me. We'll take the lift."
- Hall of Fame
- "The room ahead is the Hall of Fame..."
- "Oh, hello, Professor Rowan."
- "Professor, you still enjoy the enthusiasm kids bring to your research, don't you? <player>, step this way, please. Professor Rowan, please join us."
- "If your last time here was when I become Champion, then yes, that would be quite a long time ago. <player>, welcome to the Hall of Fame. Your names will be recorded for posterity here. What you are leaving are the memories of your adventure so far. It's time to record your names. You and your Pokémon. Remember, your Pokémon are partners that grew with you through many challenging battles. This machine will make a permanent record of your achievement."
- After talking to the man in front of the S.S. Spiral for the first time after entering the Hall of Fame
- "I thought you would come. I'm glad I waited for you! I think it's good that our world is constantly changing. Of course I don't want it to become what only one person wants. A world like Cyrus envisions...No one would want that. The kind of world I want to see is where everyone can share their joy. Where Pokémon and the people around them can be happy for each other. I want the world to become a place where everyone is smiling. The world could be so much better if we all tried to make it that way. I want you to keep traveling to many far-off places. I want you to keep meeting all kinds of people and Pokémon. I came all the way here just so I could say that to you! Your horizons will expand again if you visit the Fight Area as well. I hope our paths cross again!"
- After entering the Hall of Fame
- "This cave painting...It's always been described this way. The light in the center represents either Dialga or Palkia appearing at the Spear Pillar. The three lights around it were thought to be Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. May I continue? But, then, I realized that there may be another way of interpreting this. Could this triangle of lights actually represent a different trio? Could they be Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina instead? And the large light at their center. Does it represent something else? Could it be what created this world of ours? May I continue for a little bit longer? Thank you for listening to my theory. Do you know of the ancient Plates they find all over Sinnoh? One of them had this engraved on it. Two beings of time and space set free from the Original One.' I think this quote, too, points to the presence of another Pokémon. A Pokémon even more powerful than Dialga or Palkia. Does that sound plausible to you? I'm not quite sure how Giratina fits into this scheme of things, but... It's said that in the Distortion World, neither time nor space were stable. I think that tells us something about Giratina, the only Pokémon there. It must have been as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, the rulers of time and space. In some way, though, Giratina has to have a power opposite of theirs. I'm sorry this is so long. May I say one last bit? A long time ago, I wonder what sort of person painted this? Dialga's Roar of Time...Palkia's Spacial Rend...To the people back then, those Pokémon really must have appeared to rule over time and space. Seeing them must have shaken the people to their very core. This painting represents those feelings of awe, wonder, and everything else. It passed that memory to countless people, eventually becoming a myth...That's what I believe as a researcher of myths. I think I let myself get carried away and talked for far too long. I'm sorry, and thank you. Let's meet again."
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
In the cabin
- "My name is Cynthia. I am a Pokémon Trainer. The Sinjoh Ruins remind me of Sinnoh, where I come from. Initially, I thought it was because it snows a lot here as well. But that was not it. A long time ago... people came from Sinnoh to live here. They must have built a temple here while longing for home. That's why we call these the Sinjoh Ruins..."
- If Arceus is in the party
- "You are... a Pokémon Trainer? I can sense strong power coming from your Poké Ball..."
- "I feel a familiar presence... The power of Dialga... Palkia... or could it be Giratina? It's similar, but not quite the same... Have you got time? Can you come to the Sinjoh Ruins with me? Call it a Trainer's intuition. When you and your Pokémon step onto that stage, something will happen."
- If Arceus is not in the party
- "I wouldn't assume you managed to get here by yourself. This is a heavy-snowfall area where the snowbound land freezes you to the core... Talk to the old man if you wish to go back. Abra should be able to take you where you come from."
Inside the ruins
- If Arceus is not the walking Pokémon
- "The Sinjoh Ruins are what remains of a temple built to show respect for Arceus.
- If Arceus is the walking Pokémon
- "This is the Mystri Stage. The mythical stage built to show respect for Arceus. It is said that people used to celebrate its magnificent might with music and dance. Some people in Johto still pass down this tradition."
- If the player has anything but a single Arceus in the party
- "The Mystri Stage allows a single Arceus and nothing else to get on the stage... If you wish to go up there, you will have to deposit your other Pokémon in PC Box at the cabin."
- If the player only has a single Arceus in the party
- "According to an ancient document, time, space, and antimatter, or what combined we call the world, shall be born when Arceus stands on the Mystri Stage. This is where one might say, "The lead enters the Mystri Stage at last." All my study of ruins and Pokémon mythology in Sinnoh may have been to bring you up on this stage here today... Depicted on the Mystri Stage are the Pokémon that shaped this world. The circle in the middle is Arceus, the origin of it all..."
- "This is the pattern that represents Palkia, the master of space and dimensions..."
- "This is the pattern that represents Dialga, the guardian of time..."
- "This is the pattern that represents Giratina, the ruler of the world that is on the opposite side of ours, the world of antimatter..."
- "Arceus has accepted you as a Trainer. Arceus, having shaped the world, is said to show you a glimpse of its true power. The power of possibly making life appear out of nothing..."
- "It seems that something will happen when you chose one of the circles... You'll want to be well prepared."
- "Once you are ready, choose a circle and stand in the middle of it."
- Standing on Dialga's circle
- "So you choose Dialga, the guardian of time?"
- Standing on Palkia's circle
- "So you choose Palkia, the master of space and dimensions?"
- Standing on Giratina's circle
- "So you choose Giratina, the ruler of the Distortion World?"
- After Arceus creates an Egg
- "That shining sphere... Could it be...an Egg? Did we just witness the very moment an Egg was brought to this world? A moment no one has ever seen?"
- "An Egg is the cradle of every being. The planet itself is an Egg in a sense... Life that comes from an Egg will come to an end in due course... to begin anew... That may be what Arceus wanted to show us."
- "That was...? We seem to be surrounded by that strong power again...!"
Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2
First visit
- "What's this?"
- "What an uncanny resemblance... It's surprising to meet another Trainer who has intense eyes like that Pokémon Trainer. What's your name? ... OK. I'll remember that! <player>, nice to meet you. I'm Cynthia. I'm a Pokémon Trainer, too, like you. I have an insatiable curiosity for researching Pokémon myths."
- "I'm sure you know about Undella Town's Abyssal Ruins, right? I'm staying here at my friend's villa so I can investigate them."
- "In order to get to know each other better as Pokémon Trainers, I would like our Pokémon to have a match. Would you care to be my opponent?"
- No: "Ha ha. You prefer to take things slowly and rationally, am I right? When you're ready, come and talk to me. I'll be happy to see you."
- "Oh. You've had a chance to get ready? I do want our Pokémon to have a match... Are you prepared to be my opponent?"
- Yes: "Before I send out my Pokémon, my heart always begins to race... Interesting... My Pokémon in their Poké Balls are radiating a happy feeling. Are you the reason? What are you?"
- After sending out last Pokémon
- "When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
- When the last Pokémon is at critical health
- "You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
- Being defeated
- "My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"
- After being defeated
- "That was beyond my expectation! What an exceptional battle! You certainly bear a resemblance to that Trainer who faced Giratina... Oh, pardon me. I was just thinking out loud. I love being here in spring and summer. I can't stay all year, because there's so much to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. You're a great Trainer, and it would make me happy to see you again sometime."
- If talked to again
- "I love to come here in spring and summer. But there are a lot of things to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. I'd be delighted to see you again. You're an awesome Pokémon Trainer!"
Later visits (Spring)
- Before battle
- "How terrific to see you again! I've got to tell you... My Pokémon are excited to battle yours. Would you care to be my opponent?"
- No: "Oh, what a pity. Summers in Undella Town make me feel like I'm on holiday. I forget about battling! But in spring, I feel like getting worked up with a good battle."
- "I can tell that my Pokémon are excited about battling your Pokémon... Would you care to be my opponent?"
- Yes: "This will be such fun! No holds barred!"
- No:
- After sending out last Pokémon
- "When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
- When the last Pokémon is at critical health
- "You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
- Being defeated
- "My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"
- After being defeated
- "For some reason, this reminds me of a time when I told a Trainer like you to go see many, many more places and to meet many more Pokémon. For me, it has really been worthwhile to come all the way to far Unova. Why? Because... I met you, and my world got wider!"
- Before battle
- "To live their lives to the fullest, people and Pokémon need the chance to throw themselves into battle against the fiercest opposition. That's why I want to battle you. How about it?"
- No: "I'm a little disappointed. I know you can battle on bigger stages than you've done so far! It's so plain to me that your light can shine brighter than this..."
- "Are you prepared? Let's battle at full strength and see how bright our lights can shine!"
- Yes: "As our Pokémon meet in battle, I'll learn more about you and how you've taken care of them."
- "When you meet Trainers, battle them to learn about the kind of people they are. Observe the Pokémon they choose, which moves they taught them, and which items the Pokémon hold. You don't need words at such times... If you want to know more about me... Come to Sinnoh!"
Later visits (summer)
- "I'd love to live here...But if I did, there would be a mountain of research piled up...Am I right? Cynthia, enough for now! Next time, clean up."
- "What is necessary for becoming stronger than you are now? My answer is simply loving Pokémon with all your heart. That's how I am, so that's all I can say."
- "Hmm. This is difficult. I was greedy and bought a lot of swimsuits, but now I can't pick which one to wear."
- "Here's my problem. I have a white swimsuit and a black swimsuit...Which one would look better on me?"
- "Once every few years, the Champions of each region gather and compete to see who is the strongest! An interesting idea, don't you agree?"
- Before battle (first round)
- "I think I could get to like this atmosphere. It gives me an idea about the kind of person that battles here."
- Before battle (second round)
- "One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge! There won't be any letup from me!"
- Before battle (final round)
- "When you are facing a Trainer in battle, you can learn everything about them. What Pokémon they have. What moves they've taught. What items they make their Pokémon hold. There's no need for words then."
- Being defeated
- "Aww! No matter how fun the battle is, it will always end sometime..."
- If the player is defeated

History
Diamond & Pearl series
Cynthia was first mentioned in Lucian's flashback in An Elite Meet and Greet!, along with the members of the Sinnoh Elite Four.
She properly debuted in Top-Down Training!, where she was first seen battling against Lucian with her Garchomp on television. She then arrived in person in Amity Square, where she was studying ancient tablets. It was here that she met Ash, his friends, and Paul, who rushed down to Amity Square after they heard rumors of Cynthia being there. Paul challenged her to a Full Battle, but Cynthia won easily. She then mentioned that she was just like Paul in her youth, determined to win with the strongest Pokémon. After the battle, because Nurse Joy was busy, she and Brock personally healed Paul's Pokémon, after convincing him to take them to a Pokémon Center. After this, back at the Amity Square Ruins, she explained something written there means very much to her: "When every life meets another life, something will be born". Later, Ash would think about this quote from time to time. Cynthia then decided to go to Celestic Town, where she planned to study the legend of Dialga, Palkia, and the Lustrous Orb.
In Losing Its Lustrous! and Double Team Turnover!, Cynthia, along with Ash, his friends, her grandmother Professor Carolina and Officer Jenny's police officers, tried to stop Team Galactic from stealing the Lustrous Orb at Celestic Town.
In Aiding the Enemy!, Cynthia battled Aaron to defend her title of Champion of the Sinnoh region on television, which she won. Ash and his friends commented that while Aaron was strong enough to be a member of the Elite Four, Cynthia was still far stronger than him.
In The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend!, Cynthia helped Ash and his friends protect the lake guardians and put a stop to Team Galactic at Spear Pillar.
In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Flint revealed that he intended to challenge Cynthia for her title of Champion.
In An Old Family Blend!, Cynthia observed the Lily of the Valley Conference alongside Charles Goodshow, making her the first current Champion to appear at a Pokémon League Conference. While watching, she showed a deep interest in the battle between Ash and Paul. At the end of the competition, she personally delivered the trophy to the winner, Tobias, who had won the Sinnoh League and the right to face the Elite Four.
In Memories Are Made of Bliss!, Ash and his friends watched her battle with Flint for the title of Champion. Flint's Infernape managed to defeat two of her Pokémon, but Garchomp ultimately defeated Flint's Infernape, earning Cynthia the victory.
Cynthia also had a cameo appearance at the beginning of Arceus and the Jewel of Life, where she was engaged in a battle against Palmer. In addition, Cynthia made a cameo appearance in the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
Best Wishes series
In All for the Love of Meloetta!, Cynthia met up with Ash again in Virbank City in Unova at an ice cream stand. She told Ash, Iris and Cilan about the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, where she would have an exhibition match. Ash and his friends then decided to go with Cynthia and participate. On the way to the seaport to take a plane to Cynthia's villa in Undella Town, she almost hit an injured Meloetta with her car. She discovered that it was suffering from a fever and gave Ash, Iris, and Cilan instructions on how to make it feel better. She asked Iris and Cilan to find a Berry for it while she and Ash would get some ice. She was revealed to have a Glaceon which used Ice Beam to freeze the water. Cynthia and Ash broke the ice and took it to Meloetta. After it recovered a little, Iris asked Cynthia if she could battle her and her Garchomp while she used Axew, as Iris was thrilled to battle a Dragon-type she had never met before. Cynthia agreed and the battle got underway. Even though Axew learned Giga Impact during the battle, Garchomp proved to be way too strong for Axew. Just when Garchomp was about to hit Axew with Brick Break, Cynthia stopped Garchomp from attacking and ended the battle before Axew could get hurt.
In Piplup, Pansage, and a Meeting of the Times!, Ash and his friends arrived in Undella Town, at Cynthia's villa. Here, Ash was reunited with Dawn for the first time since his journey in Sinnoh. After that, Cynthia watched a battle between Dawn and Cilan.
In Jostling for the Junior Cup!, Cynthia was seen talking with Alder in Lacunosa Town, where the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup was held. Later, she participated in an exhibition match with her Garchomp against Unova Elite Four member Caitlin and her Gothitelle. The battle resulted in a draw after the battle's 10 minute time limit ran out. She then appeared in Battling Authority Once Again!, where she observed the tournament and helped Iris with Dragonite's problem with listening to her commands and gave Trip some advice. After the conversation Trip thought to himself that after defeating Alder, she would be next. In the following episode, Cynthia was seen watching the battle of Iris against Ash and after the battle, Cynthia talked to Iris about their relationships with Pokémon. In Goodbye, Junior Cup - Hello Adventure!, Cynthia was seen watching the battle Trip was allowed to have against Alder for winning the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup. After this, she watched the closing ceremony of the competition. Back in Undella Town, she watched a battle between Ash and Dawn, and later went with the others to wave Dawn farewell when she went to Johto.
In Meloetta and the Undersea Temple! and Unova's Survival Crisis!, Cynthia helped Ash and his friends put a stop to Team Rocket's Operation Tempest and saved the Unova region from the Forces of Nature's Therian Forme's rage. She said goodbye to Ash in Beauties Battling for Pride and Prestige! after informing him that the Unova League was starting in a few weeks.
Cynthia also made a cameo appearance in the ending credits of Genesect and the Legend Awakened.

History
Diamond & Pearl arc
Cynthia first appears in Ring Around the Roserade II. She is first seen in Eterna City, where she correctly predicts the evolutions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's Tru, Chimler, and Piplup. After laughing at Diamond and Pearl's comedy routine, Cynthia offers to give Platinum advice for her upcoming Gym battle against Gardenia. Once finished, Cynthia attacks the Team Galactic Eterna Building in order to rescue Rad Rickshaw, who was kidnapped by Team Galactic.
In Suffering Psyduck, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum encounter Cynthia again at the Pokémon Mansion. Cynthia reveals that Mr. Backlot, the owner of the mansion, asked her to investigate a Psyduck that went missing. She takes the three to Route 210, where a large group of Psyduck have clustered together, creating a roadblock that prevents anyone from passing through the route. Using a SecretPotion, Cynthia cures the Psyduck of their headaches, causing them to disperse and allow travel through Route 210.
Afterward, Cynthia and the trio meet with Cynthia's grandmother, who had been forced to stay at the Café Cabin due to the roadblock preventing her from going back to Celestic Town. Cynthia decides to have her grandmother take the trio to Celestic Town while she goes off to return one of the Psyduck to its owner. Before leaving, Cynthia lends her Garchomp to her grandmother for protection.
In Halting Honchkrow, Cynthia appears at the Team Galactic HQ to confront Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic. Cynthia reveals that her intentions were to take revenge on Cyrus for attacking Celestic Town, her hometown. Despite her best efforts, Cynthia's rage leads to her commanding Garchomp to attack with Draco Meteor, which it had yet to master. The attack heavily damages Cyrus's Gyarados, but fails to actually knock it out. With Garchomp left exhausted after using the move, Cyrus bids Cynthia farewell and heads to the Spear Pillar to begin his plans.
Cynthia, realizing that Cyrus intends to summon Dialga and Palkia, decides to follow after him to prevent the two Pokémon from being awakened. As she heads out of the building, Cynthia comes across Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, who had fought Team Galactic to free Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf from their clutches. The trio join Cynthia and travel to the Spear Pillar in order to put a stop to Cyrus's ambitions. By the time the group arrived at the Spear Pillar, Cyrus had already successfully summoned Dialga and Palkia and had them fight each other. The clash between the two Legendary Pokémon creates distortions in time and space that slowly begin to engulf the Sinnoh region. The distortions, combined with her injures, prevent Cynthia from being much help to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum during the battle against Cyrus.
During the battle, an explosion causes Cynthia to drop a scroll containing information on Dialga and Palkia. After translating the scroll, Platinum relays the information to Diamond and Pearl, who successfully free Dialga and Palkia from Cyrus's control. Now free, Dialga and Palkia combine their powers to defeat Cyrus and stop the distortions affecting Sinnoh.
Platinum arc
In The Final Dimensional Duel I, Cynthia is taken to Veilstone City by her grandmother. Cynthia is chastised by her grandmother over her defeat at the hands of Cyrus. Cynthia's grandmother reveals she plans on training Cynthia to fully master learning Draco Meteor.
In The Final Dimensional Duel X, Cynthia appears in Sunyshore City, where she defeats Charon and Giratina with a fully-mastered Draco Meteor. When asked how she knew Giratina would appear in Sunyshore, Cynthia reveals that being trapped in the Distortion World left Giratina with the desire to see the sun. Afterward, Cynthia takes her grandmother to the Café Cabin as thanks for the special training.
HeartGold & SoulSilver arc
In All About Arceus IX, Cynthia is seen in the Johto region, where she spots Dialga and Palkia flying towards Sinnoh. She is then approached by Palmer, a Frontier Brain who also hails from Sinnoh.

Trivia
- In Platinum, when Cynthia visits the player at their Villa, she notes how relaxing it is there and that she doesn't want to go home because her house is a complete mess. She goes on to say, "My house? Even the region is a secret!" This implies that she may live in a region other than Sinnoh.
- Not including the rivals, Cynthia is the only NPC in the games to receive a Pokédex.
- After the player heads into the Distortion World in Platinum, should the player use the portal to head back into Spear Pillar, Cynthia will still be there, while also being in the Distortion World.
- In the Generation IV games, Milotic is her only Pokémon used that was not introduced during that generation.
- Cynthia is the only woman in the Champions Tournament at the PWT.
- Cynthia has appeared in more episodes of the anime than any other Champion.
- In Platinum, none of Cynthia's Pokémon share a type, making her the only Champion to have this trait under any conditions. The only other Champion whose Pokémon don't share a type is Blue in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, although this is only happens during the rematch and if the player chose Squirtle as their starter.
- Verity, a main character in I Choose You!, has a mother who bears a remarkable resemblance to Cynthia. Though the movie is set in an alternate continuity from the main anime, director Kunihiko Yuyama has repeatedly confirmed that the woman isn't Cynthia.[1]
